Weekend Trip to Pytingwyn Woods

What a gorgeous site - at one side a babbling brook, that you can hear as you fall asleep, to pairs of Red Kites and Buzzards wheeling overhead - and flocks of Goldfinches hopping about the grasses in the meadow and field. The weather was very good and I fell asleep watching bats and the moon rise, with the van door open all night. There's already stone fire pits, a compostable loo, and a lovely area where you can pitch up and enjoy the woods and the area, in peace and quiet. David is the owner and is lovely, so very helpful, which I appreciated loads. I can see why this little slice of heaven has been nominated for awards - and I'd suggest that people come and visit to try it out for themselves.

Weekend Trip to Pytingwyn Woods

My 8 year old loves making dens and bases and has heard about wild camping that my wife and I used to do and wanted to do some himself. Since he isn’t quite up to a proper expedition at his age I went looking for a campsite where we could give him a taste of it and found this place. We camped in the woods within a few metres of the river. We cooked over fires and slept under a tarp shelter between trees, boiled water from the river and in his eyes lived in the wilderness for a couple of days. Just what we were after.

2 nights at Mynydd Mawr

Hard to find initially so follow the directions given, although they weren’t that great to be honest. Follow the headland and not the postcode, site is last one on the left if you keep going past where the post code leads you too. However the site is good, great views when you can see them. We had bad weather but on the occasions it was nice the view was lovely. Very basic site, but very clean and well kept and I would say decent value for money. Not sure we’d stay again but that’s just due to the fact that we prefer places closer to beach access for the kids, although have to say they were happy as can be so no complaints from them! Showers cost 50p for 3 minutes so bring plenty with you as we didn’t know this and struggled to get enough from shops to serve a family of 4

Loved it here. The site was really quiet and chilled. Quality walks from the site with amazing views. Tons of wildlife and easy to get to lots of beaches. The owner was sound and we had a top time 😀

We loved our time there. Beautiful view. Family friendly. Good communication. Very close to cider farm, castles and ice cream farm so a very good spot for us. Have to plan for no shower on site but that adds to the fun.

2 nights at Parke Farm Camping

We had a lovely two night stay at Parke Farm. The pitches were spacious and well kept and we liked the long grass between them to give a sense of privacy. It wasn't very busy so we were able to pick our pitch. It was a quiet site but family friendly. All the facilities were clean and there were flushing toilets, hot showers, washing up facilities, a fridge/freezer and even free tea and coffee in the morning. The little onsite shop is a bit pricey but does have anything you would likely need if you'd forgotten to pack it. Check in was easy and everyone on site was friendly and helpful. The location was brill and about ten minutes drive from Barafundle and Broad Haven. We would happily stay again.

2 nights at Henbant Permaculture Farm + Camp

A blissful retreat from day to day life. An idyllic little hideaway with the warmest of welcomes. I loved the undercover barn areas with books and games, sofas and tables, tea and coffee. We really enjoyed opportunity to get stuck in on the farm and help with the veg patch. We stayed in a campervan pitch with glorious sea views and short stroll to compost loo. Wish we'd brought a mallet though as ground was sandy/stony and really tricky for pegging out our awning. Pitch is exposed, so bare that in mind if pitching any tent/awning and bring a mallet!!

5 nights at Bwch Yn Uchaf

It’s a beautiful campsite, lovely level field the river was gorgeous and our children loved playing in the little stream by the edge of the field. The toilets and showers were kept clean. Gareth was really friendly and even came to the rescue with jump leads.

Fantastic! Pridie was lovely and the sauna was fantastic on a wet day. Just what we needed!

Lovely campsite, in a lovely setting. 10 min walk into Knighton, 30 minute drive to Llandrindod Wells. Fire pits available to hire, lovely toilet/shower block. I’m sure we will be back 😀

If you’re lucky, you’ll get to see at least one of the amazing sunsets at Red Sky at Night Campsite near Monmouth – but if you don’t, there’s mighty compensation in the shape of the spectacular views from just about everywhere on the site. And of course, on clear nights, the night skies are diamond-bright with stars - we are under one of Wales' Dark Sky Reserves! This family-run camping field on a livestock farm is managed on very laidback lines. Pitch up wherever you like and feel free to park by your tent (weather permitting). Raised campfires are allowed and you can hire firepits and grills (the owners sell local eggs & sausages) and buy bags of wood & kindling. You can bring your dogs too (take them for walks in the adjoining woods) but just be sure to keep them on a lead. Kids are certainly carefully looked after here. Get a fact sheet on arrival and join mini-campers in wildlife hunts through the trees, looking out all the while for buzzards and red kites. Round and about the site, your offspring can entertain themselves on rope swings, making dens and following a mini-tractor course across the camping field. There’s also a football pitch. Wild camping this may be (there’s no electricity on site, please note) but there are two nicely designed compost loos and a covered sink areas with fresh water tap. So bring your guitar, light that fire, break out the barbecue and enjoy the chilled vibe.

Coed Obry is a 5.5 acre private woodland on the edge of Snowdonia National Park. It has its own private gated access from the road and a 50m track leads from the A 4085 to a small car park for 5 vehicles. Paths lead from there to the caravan, bunkhouse, camping areas. There is a compost toilet block and sink (cold water tap) in the centre of the wood shared by all visitors. The notice board in the car park provides visitors with maps, photos and information about the wood, and there are laminated maps showing the routes of around 30 local walks which visitors are welcome to borrow during their stay. Canoe, kayaks and paddle boards are available to hire in Coed Obry and there are several fire pits with seasoned firewood for sale. There is no mains water so visitors are requested to bring their own drinking water, but rain water harvesting systems provide water for washing. Nearby there are several outstanding beaches within 1-3 miles and there is good access to the mountains of Snowdonia; the Afon Dwyryd provides an excellent sheltered river/estuary for canoeing and paddle boarding; the slate quarries and tourist attractions of Blaenau Ffestiniog, rock climbing at Tremadog (2 miles); spectacular waterfalls at Croesor (1 mile); the Ffestiniog Narrow Gauge Railway (0.5 miles); the Glaslyn Osprey Centre (1 mile); several shops, restaurants, hostelries and Spar shop in Penrhyndeudraeth (1 mile); three large supermarkets and a regional shopping centre in Porthmadog (2.5 miles).

Our level well drained field is easily accessible from the A483, and offers spacious pitches. We have 4 hardstanding pitches the remainder being laid to grass, with optional; electric hook ups available. We have spotless toilets and showers, with shaver point and offer a large utility room for washing up, fridge freezer and sockets for mobile phone charging. We welcome all types of units - tents, touring caravans, campervans, etc. as well as dogs (though ask that these remain on a leash) The village os Crossgates is within walking distance, which offers launderette facilities at the local garage which also has a cafe and handy Co-Op shop at the petrol filling station. Llandrindod Wells, which has cafes, supermarkets, pubs, takeaways and activities, is approximately 3 miles South. Fishing is available on the farm, with trout, chubb and brownings on the river Ithon, but licences are required. Torches are a must, as we have no street lighting, ideal to star gaze at night whilst listening to the nearby animals.
