Weekend Trip to Beirhope Alpacas

Brie hope Alpacas is fantastic! We didn’t go for the alpacas but they were a lovely addition to our trip nonetheless. The Woodland Wonder pitch is absolutely fantastic, really big and private space for ourselves and friends. The facilities are very clean and while they are basic have everything you need for an easy stay. The outdoor washing sink was a brilliant facility for us as we are used to washing our dishes in a little washing bowl on the floor with cold water. It was quite luxurious as camping goes!

We had a brilliant few days camping at Ted’s farm. Ted was very welcoming, helpful and even let us feed the little lambs! The views of the hills from the campsite and stars at night were beautiful. It was a wonderfully peaceful and quiet place, but still close enough to neighbouring villages for food/drinks. Couldn’t recommend this spot more!

A Little Slice of Peace – Highly Recommend! Stayed here for just one night and it was exactly what I needed. The owner, Ted, was incredibly friendly and made me feel instantly welcome—like visiting an old friend. The landscape is absolutely beautiful, with animals roaming freely and adding to the peaceful, natural vibe. It’s the kind of place that slows you down in the best way. I only wish I’d stayed longer! Close to the A66 & M6 by Penrith, so good place to be based for exploring the area. Site clean and tidy, super laid back, a bit rustic and quirky... in a nice way. Friendly people and dog! Free use of on site fridge/freezer and kettles, toilets and shower clean. Nice out door seating area/s with fire pits/bbq's. Glamping pods/tents and caravans looked interesting...! We stayed in my campervan..

Weekend Trip to The Old Chapel Campsite

The campsite is situated on a beautiful little piece of land off the side of Ted’s house. The campsite is enclosed by a stone brick wall and had access via a gate. There are geese, sheep, lambs, ducks and a turkey that roam around the site - all are very friendly and Ted very kindly let us bottle feed the lambs! There is a porter loo for campers to use, it was fully supplied with toilet roll, soap, running water and hand tissues. Ted has fresh hen and duck eggs for sale on the land. We brought a raised pit fire with us, but Ted also has them available to rent for your whole stay along with bags of firewood. Ted was very kind and made us feel very welcome. We’d definitely return! The only issue we ran into was a nearby camping group playing music throughout their stay and loudly into the night - we messaged Ted and he kindly popped out to ask them to turn it down.

3 nights at Moss Side Farm Campsite

Quiet, relaxed, easy feel, part of a working farm (in which you often get curiously and delightfully visited by various pairs of animals from a couple of old rams, a pair of goats, ducks and sheep dogs!), fires permitted, no children, stunning views, perfectly good enough facilities and great walks on the quieter (but no less beautiful) side of the Lakes! Highly recommended. Louise, the owner, is salt of the earth too. ❤️😁🙏

David kindly welcomed us at very short notice, very friendly and accommodating, brilliant with comms. Have your choice of parking over two large fields, you'll be parking on a hillside, with wide open views for miles, perfectly orientated to watch the sunset on horizon. Levelling ramps recommended in some spots. - Fresh-water taps on site, along with clean portaloo(s) - Firepits and wood available for hire

2 nights at The Old Chapel Campsite

We had an amazing time here. We stayed for two nights and had beautiful weather. There was just us and another couple with their dog. Ted was very accommodating and well informed about the area and gave us some ideas to fill our days. It was lovely watching his little ducks on the field and to hear the sheep in the morning too. It’s back to basics camping, no burger vans/shower blocks etc but it was absolutely perfect for what we wanted. ‘Proper camping’ Lovely quiet location, spotless portaloo and a friendly host.

Amazing wild camping experience (with luxuries), not far from Kelso. Peaceful spot with a handful of pitches ideal for families and couples, Lynne and staff are warm and welcoming, super friendly. Firewood and groceries can be accessed anytime you need, just pay in the morning. Eco toilets are cleaned regularly. Great stargazing area and a picnic area too, plenty of space and idyllic scenery...and there are the alpacas. Beautiful spot... Just don't tell everyone!

Tyne View Camping is a peaceful spot in Tyne and Wear, not far from Hedley on the Hill village. It's on a farm run by David and his family, who welcome guests to enjoy the beautiful countryside views. You can see the Tyne Valley from the camping pitches, which is great for stargazing at night. The site is basic with just water taps and toilets, no showers, but there's lots of space for kids and dogs to play. You're allowed to bring a barbecue or firepit for cooking, and you can buy supplies in Prudhoe nearby. Or, you can walk to Hedley on the Hill for a meal at a top-notch pub. There are plenty of things to do nearby, like walking in the woods, playing golf, or trying gliding. Overview

In the heart of Dumfries and Galloway, Thornhill is a small town with a long history, having been founded in the 1600s. The town is home to attractive broad streets and Victorian villas. Just north is Drumlanrig Castle, one of Scotland’s grandest 17th-century renaissance buildings, which, although a private residence, is open to the public. There are numerous opportunities for outdoor activities, such as exploring waymarked walking trails, cycling on mountain bike trails and golfing on Thornhill’s 18-hole golf course. Land Rover tours of the Nithsdale countryside and wildlife spotting are other popular activities.

Where to go

Around Town

Staying in Thornhill puts you within easy reach of such attractions as Caerlaverock Castle and Ae Forest. Just south of town, set amid rolling hills and minutes from the 7stanes mountain biking centre, Oakbank Farm Campsite has pitches for tents, caravans and motorhomes, as well as a self-catering cottage.

Dumfries

A 30-minute drive south of Thornhill, attractions in the busy town of Dumfries include the Robert Burns Centre, home to the poet’s manuscripts and belongings, and Sweetheart Abbey where he composed some of his best poems. Just a few minutes west of the town centre, Barnsoul Caravan Park offers camping, glamping and touring in wildlife-filled woodland.

Wanlockhead

Under a 30-minute drive north of Thornhill, Wanlockhead is Scotland’s highest village. The Southern Upland Way long distance footpath passes through the village as it travels from Portpatrick in the west to Cockburnspath in the east. A few minutes north of the village, the small campsite at Lettershaws Farm has pitches set in rolling hills.

When to go

The long daylight hours and promise of good weather of the April through August period makes it the most popular time to visit Thornhill and the surrounding Dumfries and Galloway region—make site reservations in advance if travelling during school summer holidays. If you are planning to hike the Southern Upland Way, which passes nearby, spring or autumn is best for avoiding the biggest crowds.

Know before you go

Wild camping is legal throughout Scotland as long as you follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
There is a train station in Dumfries (15 miles or 24 kilometres away) with direct connections to Glasgow and over the border to Carlisle.
The weather in Scotland is always changeable, even in summer. Come prepared with warm, waterproof clothing.
Don’t worry if you forgot something, Thornhill has plenty of well-stocked shops. You’ll find bigger supermarkets and a few outdoor gear shops in Dumfries.
