A small, off-grid campsite with alpacas in the historically rich southern Scottish borders

Back in 2016, Lynne Jobes went to a glamping show with the intention to buy some yurts. She wanted to set up a campsite on her smallholding in the Scottish southern borders but, to everyone’s surprise, she returned with alpacas. Since then, she and her team have been running Beirhope Alpaca Trekking, a lovely little business offering hikes into the surrounding landscape of the Cheviot Hills and the Kale Valley. Now, several years later, Beirhope has become a campsite and it’s finally possible to pitch up right next to the woolly Peruvians.

Set just slightly north of the Anglo-Scottish border and overlooked by the old Roman hill fort of Thowliestane Hill, campers can pitch a tent and have a campfire in the field adjacent to the alpaca paddock. Furthermore, to keep from scaring the alpacas, dogs are not allowed in the main part of the site but are welcome to stay with their owners on a separate pitch in a secluded oak and beech woodland closer to the barn. The barn houses the main reception area and is also where the facilities can be found. There’s a compost loo, hot water bucket shower, and honesty shop for essentials.

It’s not all about the alpacas, however. Beirhope offers the chance for guests to share in the owner’s passion for the landscape in which they find themselves. Indeed, a short walk along Dere Street, possibly Scotland’s oldest road and which runs past the campsite, leads to Thowliestane with its panoramic views taking in the Eildons and Peniel Heugh to the north and The Cheviot, The Schill and Hownam Law to the East. It’s not the Andes but it is wild and breathtaking in equal measure. And whether you have Lynne’s alpaca crew in tow or not, this really is a walker’s paradise. The classic Pennine Way route has its northern end in the tiny village of Kirk Yetholm a short distance away and the east-west trail, St Cuthbert’s Way, passes through the same place, bridging the English Scottish border.

Going slightly further afield will lead to the market town of Kelso, home of the magnificent Floors Castle, which lies on the confluence of the rivers Tweed and Teviot or the historic county town of Jedburgh, with its 12th-century abbey, both within a short driving distance of Beirhope.

Amazing unique stay
If you're looking for a unique and unforgettable camping experience in the heart of the Cheviot Hills, look no further than this alpaca farm. I recently had the pleasure of spending two nights here and it was truly a one-of-a-kind adventure. From the moment we arrived, we were struck by the beauty of the farm. Surrounded by rolling hills and dotted with adorable alpacas, it felt like a peaceful oasis in the midst of nature. The host greeted us with a warm welcome and showed us to our campsite, which was situated in a quiet field of the property with stunning views of the surrounding countryside and alpacas. The host was the most amazing part of our stay. They went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed, providing nearby walking routes with the dog. These didn't disappoint. They were also incredibly knowledgeable about the alpacas, and we loved learning about these fascinating animals and getting to interact with them. The camping facilities were basic but clean and well-maintained, with a spacious leanto area for cooking and socializing. We appreciated the rustic charm of the campsite and loved being surrounded by nature. The starry night sky was absolutely breathtaking, and I fell asleep to the peaceful sounds of the alpacas grazing nearby. Overall, I can't recommend this alpaca farm camping experience enough. It's perfect for anyone who loves the outdoors and wants to disconnect from the

Fabulous camping with a great view
We had an amazing 2 nights here apart from some adverse weather on our arrival nothing put a dampner on our stay! Lynne was an amazing host and very welcoming, great with our toddlers and nothing was too much trouble and went above and beyond to make our stay so memorable. Sam's super pitch had an amazing view and loads of extras in the kitchen shelter to make the stay that bit more special. The Alpacas and other animals were great and the wee ones loved feeding them. The local area had plenty to do as well if you want to explore.

Camping out with Alpacas.
We stayed in the Touareg Tent for 2 nights and had a fantastic time. Hosts couldn't have been more helpful. The covered camp kitchen that's with the Touareg was extremely handy. Wifi available down by the shop if you need to connect, but if you're looking to switch off then the tent is perfect. And its not everyday you get to camp on an Alpaca farm! Our kids loved seeing (and feeding) the Alpacas (and their sheep and goat pals). Very much recommended.

Unique camping experience
We had an excellent night camping at Beirhope. The alpaca farm is so peaceful and in a great location for access to Kelso and Jedburgh. We had everything we needed whilst there, and could find just about anything in the camp shop. Lynne was so friendly and helpful, answered all of our questions quickly and gave us a tour of the farm. We loved the alpaca trek and couldn't recommend it enough as a unique experience in a glorious setting. Would definitely stay again.

Highly recommend
Tenzing's Touareg was amazing!! Super spacious, clean and well looked after. With your own fully equipped kitchen and your own toilet shed you got everything you need right there. The shower is a tiny bit small and the area where you can wash the dishes should ideally have a little roof but all in all we had a great time. Everyone on the farm is super helpful and friendly. It’s a quiet place to just switch off and watch the world go by. I wouldn’t be surprised if we came back soon.

Fabulous
What a lovely set up! We had a brilliant 3 nights here and would definitely return. Lynne is an incredibly welcoming and helpful host; we loved the bucket shower, the gorgeous wee shop, and access to a fridge and freezer was a great luxury in the heat. I appreciate the small number of pitches, adding to the friendly and quiet feel. And the alpacas are lovely! We went on a sunset alpaca walk one evening - well worth it! I highly recommend.

Alpaca bag for a week next time!
We stayed just two nights in the Tourag tent, loads of space for our smaller group of three but would comfortably fit 5. Highlights were the views, of the alpacas, the cheviot hills, the night sky. All viewed from either our comfy benches at the highest point of the site, or up the hill with the alpacas on our trek. Lynn and her team are very welcoming and friendly, REAL beds in tent were super comfy, the compost loo was spotless and not an issue at all, the bucket shower was remarkably effective and even warm. Tent and camp kitchen was spotless and very well equipped. With hindsight, a big washing up bowl for washing veg and carrying dishes to wash down at main sink would’ve been a good addition. We will definitely be back, for a longer stay next time as even 2 days were very restorative.

My 5 year old and I had a brilliant night camping and visiting the alpacas. We had everything we needed. The staff were all very welcoming and helpful. It was lovely to get away from busy Edinburgh for a break. My son was excited to spot the fairy house and thought it was a magical place. I couldn't get any signal which is ideal to switch off but there was an excellent wifi spot outside the shop.

Stayed in the bell tent and what a great weekend. The tent and outside kitchen area has everything you need it’s really well looked after. Even has its own loo. Done the Alpaca trek on the Saturday and will never forget that what a great experience. Lynne and Alan are great hosts nothing is to much bother for them they go out there way to make you feel welcome. Apart from the adorable Alpacas they also have sheep and a gorgeous lamb and two cheeky goats! What more could you ask for. Would definitely book again and have recommended it to family and friends.

Wild camping with conveniences
The camp is in beautiful hill country on the edge of the Cheviots. The pitch I booked was slightly separate from the others which I found ideal as it was perfectly quiet all evening. It felt like a spectacular wild camping location but with facilities as a bonus. Make sure you book a fire pit; it really adds to the atmosphere when the temperatures start to dip in the evening. Lynne is a wonderful host, always helpful and with a smile on her face. I had a great time and hope to be back soon.

What a wonderful place to camp. Not because you get that off grid feel with stunning views, or the Alpaca neighbours ( you need to experience the Alpaca trek) it’s the host Lynn that makes your stay. A wealth of local information and nothings to much to ask . We will be back.

We loved our time at Beirhope Alpacas. A truly wonderful authentic camping experience with bucket showers, composting toilet and fabulously lovely and helpful host. Just brilliant!
From the host
Nestled in the heart of the Cheviot Hills, Beirhope boasts some of Scotland's most spectacular views. With alpaca walking activities, roman roads, hill forts and breathtaking night skies, this rural dog-friendly site is one of a kind. With five wild camping pitches, you don't have to venture far for a little piece of magic. Beirhope provides all the space, freedom and alpacas you could possibly want.
Nearby attractions

The southern Scottish borders are steeped in a rich history, from ancient Roman roads and hill forts in the Cheviots to the abbeys, castles, and country estates around Kelso and Jedburgh. Situated on the north-western edge of Kelso is Floors Castle and Gardens (01573 223333). Built for the first Duke of Roxburghe in 1721 it’s more a country house than a castle and holds the title of being the largest inhabited house in Scotland. Take a tour of the castle itself or wander the impressive gardens and woodland grounds. Stunning Jedburgh Abbey (01835 863925) is just eight miles east of the campsite and sits right in the heart of Jedburgh town. An audio tour is available for this iconic piece of architecture built around 1138 for Augustinian canons and there is a cafe next door. Cessford Castle, a large 15th-century ruin about seven miles from Beirhope, is also well worth a visit.

Food and drink
There is a small shop at Beirhope Alpacas selling basic camping staples such as pasta, beans, long-life milk, etc. and there’s a hot drinks machine as well as some confectionery items. Lynne will have seasonal veg to sell from her garden, too, when it’s available. To eat out, try the Border Hotel (01573 420237) in Town Yetholm, nine miles north of the campsite, or Templehall Hotel (01573 440249) five miles north in Morebattle and home of the famous Temple Burger. These two hotels lie on the Pennine Way and St Cuthbert’s Way long-distance national trails respectively and are thus very popular with ramblers. Valley Meats (01573 440219) is the local butcher in Morebattle and comes highly recommended by campsite owner Lynne. In Kelso, 25 minutes away by car, there is a good selection of restaurants, cafes, and pubs. The Cobbles (01573 223548) is a modern gastropub with fine dining and locally brewed ale. If you go there to eat, be sure to pop next door afterward for a dessert at Becattelli Artisan Gelato (07866450426). For a good selection of vegan and vegetarian options try Cafe U (01573 225177) who also do custom coffees and sandwiches made with specialty bread.
