Off the beaten track on top of the Mendips in an area of outstanding natural beauty. A mixture of four acres of wild woodland, orchard and field set on a hillside. Our Yurt is set up in the trees giving you peaceful seclusion and a clear view across the sea to Wales and the mountains of the Brecon Beacons. A huge range of activities are possible or you can lie in the hammock with a good book. We have very friendly dogs and rescue chickens who may come and visit. Wild deer wander past in the early morning mist and the odd buzzard picks an argument with a bunch of crows but nothing much else should disturb you. We moved here after an 18 month search 8 years ago. It was close to everything we wanted and we've spent some time getting a bit closer.

2 nights at Cuddfan - The Hiding Place

Thanks Mark for the lovely stay! The area is secluded and picturesque, which really gave us the feeling of living a nomadic life with just the basic amenities. A few tips for future visitors: Bring a hanging light or headlamp, as it gets very dark and there’s no lighting provided. There’s a gas stove and cooking area, but you’ll need to bring your own utensils. Pack warm duvets and thick jackets if you’re visiting in autumn, as nights can get very cold. 🚗 Important: Do not drive your car down to the tent. Park just after entering the gate and walk down instead. I missed the host’s message about this, got stuck trying to drive back up, and had to be rescued by a farmer with his tractor (thankfully the host responded quickly and was super helpful!). Despite that little adventure, I absolutely loved the stay and would highly recommend it if you’re looking for a unique experience without the hassle of putting up a tent yourself.

2 nights at The Yellow Submarine!

My 2 boys (13 and 9) and I stayed 2 nights in the Yellow Submarine and it was great fun! The controls and labels and various flashing lights were hilarious and the hatches and portholes were brilliant, all very authentic. My boys were convinced it had been a real sub once and totally loved the ‘history’ section of the welcome pack. The beds and sofa bed had comfy mattresses and it was good to have a little sink, fridge and hob inside. Really well stocked with sheets and duvets, plates, cutlery and pan and there was a lovely care package including tea coffee cereal boxes and marshmallows for the fire. There was even a heater/cooler so we didn’t get cold at night. Toilets are in the nearby wash block which was kept nice and clean and the showers were great. We didn’t use the BBQ and instead grilled over the top of our fire drum (tip - bring a grill if you have one, or they sell them in the excellently stocked campsite shop). The bunk bed was a bit too small for my tall 9-year old so he slept in the big bed with me and the sofa bed was comfy but narrow for my 13 yr old so 2 nights was about right. Sleeping would’ve been tricky if there’d been another person. The site was excellent and we’d love to come back - maybe to check out the school bus! Cheddar village is in easy walking distance and the site itself has lots of room for playing and football. Loved it!

2 nights at Paddington Farm

This was good trip. The campsite is large and open so you can pick any spot you like. There is a place for a campfire in the middle of the field with some seats. There is drinking water on site and the toilets are very decent with toilet paper and soap provided. There is a shop where u can get wood, vegies, cold drinks and other bits (soft drinks only) The staff running the site are very friendly. There is showers on site with hot water and fairly good pressure. There is lots of green fields and a few local attractions. We did the Glastonbury Tor. I recommend doing it in the evening when the sun goes down. Be careful tho, it's quite steep so wear good shoes. On the farm itself you can see rabbits, lamas and goats. If you walk up the hill a bit you might see larga large herd of bulls who turned out to be very friendly (if you feed them some grass, but be careful, it's a bull). We were also lucky to see army planes and helicopters doing a very low fly by above the camping site. Very impressive. Overall we had a good time and it was a cheap little holiday.

It was my first time at a campsite and it was a great experience. The pitches are far apart from each other so you get a lot of privacy. Each pitch is leveled and comes with a firepit. The views are gorgeous. I wish there were more toilets as often we had to wait. The toilet is not separate from the shower so if someone is showering the toilet becomes unavailable. I was happy to use the compost toilet but my girlfriend preferred the flushable one. Would definitely camp here again.

We had the most wonderful few days Glamping at Sam and Matt’s, there’s nothing you need or want that hasn’t already been thought of and provided with care. We had the absolute pleasure of learning all about Matt’s bees (with fashionable bee suits) and kayaking down the river with our pooch Dudley. Honestly couldn’t recommend this place enough, just perfect to get out of the City and enjoy this hidden oasis of calm.

We had the best time glamping! The location is absolutely stunning, and we were lucky enough to have perfect weather, which made it even more special. The tipi tent was cosy and beautifully set up with everything we could possibly need for a comfortable stay. We also loved having our own private bathroom and kitchen – so well equipped and such a lovely touch. Sam and Matt were amazing hosts – warm, welcoming, and always happy to help with anything. We borrowed the kayaks, which was such a fun experience, and my dog happily sat between my legs while we paddled around. There’s also the option to rent paddle boards if you fancy mixing it up. On top of that, Matt has a few bee bays, so you can even enjoy a fascinating bee experience while you’re there – such a unique and memorable activity! It was the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation, and we came away feeling refreshed and happy. We honestly couldn’t recommend this place enough and can’t wait to come back again!

Lovely campsite located by the river, quiet and a ‘get away from it all’ feel. Suezi was very welcoming and accommodating. Facilities are clean albeit a bit of a trek from most of the pitches.

2 nights at Cwmffrwd Farm Campsite

This campsite is perfection. We booked a bell tent to celebrate my birthday. It was a great choice. Everything was just lovely from the warm welcome, the help with transporting all our clobber up the hill, stunning views of the mountains and the site is a wildlife haven. We saw baby swallows and a hedgehog and loved the morning birdsong. Come here for absolute peace and tranquility. We can't wait to return.

Great little site with fantastic views. Hosts are very chilled and helpful. Stayed a couple of years ago and decided to go back as it is lovely. Did the four waterfalls walk last time and Pen-y-fan this time so loads of good walks and things to do near by. Amenities are good. If you are looking for a nice campsite with good access to the Brecon Beacons I would highly recommend. We will definitely go back again.

Where to go

North Wye Valley

Hereford and the Herefordshire Lowlands are the gateway to the northern part of the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where the mosaic farmlands and forests provide opportunities to escape the crowds. Admire the views from the Hole in the Wall, sample the region’s famous cider, or explore the iron-age hill fort at Capler Camp. Hikers congregate in the valley’s only town Ross-on-Wye, which sits about a third of the way from the top of the AONB and has access to several walking and cycling trails, most notably the Wye Valley Walk.

Central Wye Valley

The stretch of river between Ross-on-Wye and the adventure capital of Symonds Yat is arguably the most scenic. Take to the water to canoe or stand-up paddleboard, stop for lunch at a country pub by the water, or visit the mediaeval Goodrich Castle, then pitch your tent at a riverside campsite. To the east, the Forest of Dean has miles of wooded trails for walkers and cyclists.

South Wye Valley

The southern Wye Valley, from Goodrich Castle to Chepstow, is home to some of its star attractions. Tintern Abbey and Chepstow Castle are both must-sees, while the Devil’s Pulpit lookout and Lower Wye Gorge afford far-reaching views. Campers can find plenty of choice around Chepstow, the starting point of two long-distance hikes: the Wales Coast Path and the Offa's Dyke trail.

Wales

The market town of Monmouth is a strategic basecamp for exploring beyond the Welsh borders. Foodies make a beeline for Abergavenny, known as Wales’ gastronomic capital, and crowds descend on its annual food festival. Further west, the rugged peaks of the Black Mountains mark the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, where hillside hikes and backcountry camping await.

Walking in the Wye Valley

Kayaking and canoeing undoubtedly offer a fantastic way to see the Wye Valley, but these borderlands are also incredible walking country.

Stroll the river’s edge on a bit of the Wye Valley Walk, or dedicate two weeks to the whole route, camping along the way. This long-distance path follows the river from source to mouth, covering 136 miles and criss-crossing the border as it goes.
A 177-mile national trail, Offa’s Dyke Path follows the border along the route of Anglo-Saxon earthworks. It’s a 2-week challenge to conquer the whole route, but if camping in the area, just pull on your boots and choose a section for a day on the trail.
Both the Wye Valley Walk and Offa’s Dyke meet in Chepstow, along even more long-distance paths like the Gloucestershire Way, Monmouthshire Way, and Wysis Way. In fact, Chepstow has its own walking festival, sealing its status as the Wye Valley walking hub.
Further afield, there are almost unlimited walking trails in the Forest of Dean, including a sculpture trail for added interest.

Family-friendly camping in the Wye Valley

If you’re looking for a family-friendly holiday, camping in the Wye Valley ticks all the boxes. Camping in such a rich natural area offers the chance for kids to get stuck into wholesome activities like bug hunting, wildlife watching, den building, and tree climbing. The valley’s kayaking, canoeing, and climbing opportunities also appeal to families with teenagers as well as tots. In addition to all this, you’ll find kid-friendly sites throughout the region, many with facilities and activities designed with little ones in mind, from steam trains to high-ropes courses.

Popular towns in the Wye Valley

The Wye Valley’s big attraction is that there are no big attractions (at least, not man-made ones) and no big cities. Nature is the star of the show. With this, campers can spend days walking, cycling, canoeing, and kayaking to discover the area. But the valley’s picturesque villages and market towns are perfect for stocking up on supplies and finding rainy day activities.

Calling in to Symonds Yat on the Yat Gorge is almost a must, as the village links the Wye Valley with the Royal Forest of Dean and has a reputation for all things related to the great outdoors.
The only market town within the AONB, Ross-on-Wye is set high above the river with a 700-year-old church and mediaeval half-timbered buildings. Goodrich Castle isn’t far either, and one of the best-preserved mediaeval castles in England.
The village of Tintern is another popular destination thanks to the ruined Cistercian Tintern Abbey, founded in 1131.
Outside of the AONB but still on the river’s edge, the book-town of Hay-on-Wye is world-famous for its bookshops and Hay Festival of arts and literature in late May and early June.
With rural beauty all around, it might seem a shame to head into the city, but Hereford is pretty small and worth a stop for its mediaeval history and famous Mappa Mundi, Europe’s largest mediaeval map.

Top things to do in the Wye Valley

Kayak, canoe, or raft through the Lower Wye gorge.
Take a walk to see the scenery. Try a portion of the 177-mile Offa’s Dyke Path or the Wye Valley Way.
Go climbing. Experienced climbers can give Symonds Yat Rock a go, while beginners can join a guide or head for a high-rope adventure in the Forest of Dean.
Find a spot on the border where you can stand with one foot in England and one foot in Wales.
Pick up some holiday reading from a bookshop in Hay-on-Wye.
Go bat watching! The Wye Valley is internationally important for its bats, especially the rare lesser horseshoe bat.
Pop in to Hereford Cathedral to see Europe’s largest mediaeval map, the Mappa Mundi.
Enjoy a BBQ or campfire meal using local produce. A Hereford beef burger and Wye Valley beer, anyone?
