Happy on the Hill

2 units · Glamping1 acre · Shepton Mallet, Somerset, South West England
Tucked high up on Creech Hill, with one of the best views in Somerset, Happy on the Hill offers a delightful escape from normal life. This magical place nestles under ancient woodland that protects it from wild weather and brings you close to nature. You need go no further if beauty, peace and relaxation are what you are after and to enjoy it all, we offer two beautifully crafted and comfortable places for you to stay: Gabriel's Wagon and Jake's Cabin.Surrounded by birdsong and a bird’s eye view over the hillside, from both Gabriel's Wagon and Jake's Cabin you can watch buzzards circling in the valley below and get to know our resident owls that roost in the oak trees. Happy on the Hill is as inviting in the depths of winter, as the summer: a suntrap when the sun shines, a cosy look out when the rain and snow falls and the best place ever to watch the spectacular sunsets that fall behind Glastonbury Tor on the horizon. With beautiful walks from the door in all directions this is a happy haven for dogs as well as their humans. The cultural and gastronomic delights of Bruton with Hauser & Wirth and At the Chapel are an easy walk away along the beautiful old drovers lanes, which are also a joy to explore.

With over 60 acres to explore space and quite is guaranteed. Choose from secluded Idris the Shepherds hut with repurposed horsebox shower and woodfired outdoor bath, family glamping geo-domes Willow & Oak and Daisy bell tent each with covered camp kitchens or wild meadow camping plus a campervan spot. Our mission is to rewild the farm, manage the ancient woodland, support the abundant wildlife & finally protect its 5 acre peat-bog (peat bogs are as environmentally important as rain forests – peat holds more carbon than the combined forests of Britain, France and Germany!)

Star Hosts in Bath

Mountain campsites near Bath guide

Overview

With elegant Georgian architecture, scenic riverside strolls, and historic monuments everywhere you turn, Bath is deserving of its star attraction status. Prepare to be dazzled as you take in the headline acts—the Roman Baths, Bath Abbey, and Royal Crescent are all show-stoppers—then indulge your romantic side as you visit the Jane Austen Centre or indulge in a traditional afternoon tea. Once you’ve had your culture fix, there are outdoor pleasures to enjoy too. Go punting or canoeing along the River Avon, float over the countryside in a hot air balloon, or enjoy riverside walks and bike rides.

Where to go

North Somerset

Whether you want to hit the beach or explore underground caves, North Somerset has outdoor adventures to suit all tastes. Head to the Mendip Hills AONB to hike through the Cheddar Gorge, explore the Wookey Hole caves, and taste Britain’s beloved Cheddar cheese. Along the coast, seaside resorts like Burham-on-Sea and Weston-Super-Mare have sandy beaches, summer entertainment, and great seafront camping.

Cotswolds

North of Bath, the patchwork hills and winding lanes of the Cotswolds lead the way to some of England’s most picturesque villages. This AONB is the place for celebrity-spotting, scenic walks and bike rides through the countryside, and leisurely pub lunches. Burton, Bourton on Water, and Broadway are some of the most visited towns, where you’ll find plenty of choices for camping and glamping.

North Wessex Downs

Less than an hour’s drive east, the verdant chalklands of the North Wessex Downs AONB are beloved by hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders. Visit the UNESCO-listed Avebury stone circle, enjoy views of the Wiltshire White Horses, or set sail for a cruise along the Kent & Avon Canal. Further east, Downton Abbey fans won’t want to miss a visit to Highclere Castle.

When to go

Bath fills up with day-trippers in summer and during annual events such as the Bath Festival (May) or the Jane Austen Festival (Sept). Make your campsite reservations months in advance if visiting during these periods, and plan an early start to beat the crowds at top attractions. Spring and autumn are ideal for hikes in the surrounding AONBs, and there are options for winter campers, too—Bath is particularly magical over the holiday season.

Know before you go

  • Bath has several camping and outdoors stores where you can pick up everything you need for your camping trip.
  • Bath has public transport links to many of the surrounding towns and AONBs, but it is handy to have your own transport, especially if staying at rural campsites.
  • Wild camping is illegal throughout the UK, although there are some areas where it is possible with permission from the landowners.
