Dog-friendly glamping in Seven Sisters

·

You’ve probably heard of the White Cliffs of Dover, but there’s an equally spectacular set of white cliffs along the southern shores of Sussex—the Seven Sisters. Marvel at the dramatic chalk cliffs from Seaford Head or Birling Gap, or head down to Cuckmere Haven to view the cliffs from the beach. Hikers can also tackle the 12-mile (4-6 hour) Seven Sisters walk along the cliff-tops, part of the South Downs Way national trail. Campers can pitch their tent in the Seven Sisters Country Park or choose from several campsites within the South Downs National Park.

The Shepherd's Hut at Coombe Farm Glamping is only an hour or so from London and within easy reach of Goodwood, Cowdray and the south coast; yet once you're here, you'll feel as if you've stepped through the back of the wardrobe and into the ancient woodland that surrounds, unimpeded views towards the South Downs and barely another soul around. The hut stands alone in the field, so you will exclusively enjoy the tranquility the land has to offer. The Hut is equipped with fresh linen and towels, made extra cozy and warm with a beautiful flame and clean burning bio ethanol burner which creates a relaxed ambience, providing amazing heat for the chillier season stay. The wash area is compact with everything you will need for alfresco catering and dining, including a great camp compressor fridge. We also provide equipment to cook on the ample fire pit for an authentic camp experience. We have a revitalizing, hot and spacious shower, all run from our off grid system. We also provide luxury toiletries. Our loo is composting, extremely clean and freshly set up for every new guest and in keeping with our off grid, low-fi ethos. Our family farm, Durleigh Marsh Farm is in Rogate, 5 min drive from Rake or about an hours walk through the woodland south from the hut. The popular Tea room offers a great breakfast and lunch menu. Booking is advisable. Between the nearby traditional market towns of Petersfield and Haslemere you will discover a diverse choice of places to shop, dine and drink. The site is encompassed by beautiful walks and trails taking you further into the heart of the South Downs.

Simple camping and comfortable glamping amongst organic fruit trees, wild flowers and woodland, bordering an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with some of the darkest night skies in Europe. In the beautiful High Weald of Kent, Tash and Nick have been running May Tree Orchard's low-impact, nature-friendly, seasonal campsite, Plum Camping, for the last 5 years. The Soil Association certified organic land is full of wild flowers and surrounded by woodland and other orchards. Electricity and hot water for showers and washing up is solar generated. So you can charge your phone if necessary, but we'd recommend stargazing and enjoying the quiet warmth of friends and family around an evening fire instead. Bring your own tent, stay in the delightful hand-made shepherd’s hut or stylish caravan, or hire the whole May Tree Orchard space. Numbers are kept low here so that there is always plenty of room for everyone, as well as peace and quiet. The campsite is an hour and a half drive from London and a 20 min walk to the sleepy and pretty village of Goudhurst, with pubs selling great food and two local shops for self-catering. There are also two excellent farm shops within walking distance. Close to May Tree Orchard, there are walks via Sissinghurst, Scotney and Bodiam Castle, and water activities on the River Rother and at Bewl Water. Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest is a ten-minute drive from the campsite and the coast around Hastings and Rye is just over 30 minutes. An amazing independent food business, Growing Communities, sells pears, apples and plums grown at the orchard in their box scheme serving North and South London, and you can also buy them from the Pear Necessities stall at Stoke Newington Farmers Market. Delicious apple juice and tasty chutney made from the organic apples grown in the orchard are available to purchase on site, as well as plum preserve and orchard plums.

We look forward to welcoming you to Setts Wood Farm and will provide you with all you need for a relaxing and rewarding visit to Tenterden and The Weald. We offer a selection of bell tents or you can bring your own tent. The camping is set across 2 fields and extends to 12 acres. We have a maximum of 30 tents so it is never crowded. Come and meet the alpacas, sheep, pigs, goats and horses! We also have a small fishing lake which guests are welcome to use for a small donation. We restocked last year and there are carp and several species of smaller silver fish. It is ideal for beginners and children. Any children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Setts Wood Farm is perfectly positioned to explore Tenterden and the surrounding villages, and is less than a 20 minute drive to the historic town of Rye, with the beaches of Camber, Dymchurch and Littlestone just a few minutes further.

Seven Sisters camping guide

When to go

Visiting the Seven Sisters is a popular choice for day-trippers from London, and viewpoints can get crowded in July and August. Make an early start to snag a parking spot or opt for a weekday visit out of season to enjoy the views to yourself. Camping at Seven Sisters Country Park is possible from April through October only, but some campsites within the South Downs National Park stay open year-round.

Know before you go

  • The Seven Sisters cliffs are located between Seaford and Eastbourne, along the south coast of Sussex. The main access points are from Seaford to the west, or Birling Gap in the east. Parking is available at both sites.
  • There is a Visitor Centre, restrooms, a café, and paid parking at the Seven Sisters Country Park. From the park, it’s a 3-mile walk or drive to reach the cliffs.
  • The Seven Sisters Country Park campsite is a walk-in, tent-only ground with toilets, a cold water shower, and drinking water. You’ll need to bring a stove and all other camping gear with you.
  • The cliff-top walk is exposed, so wear hiking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. Coastal winds can be strong, so you might want a light jumper even in summer, and choose a hat with a neck strap.
  • The cliff viewpoint at Birling Gap is wheelchair accessible.
