A rural getaway doesn’t have to involve a long drive or lots of winding lanes to negotiate – and an excellent example of this is Beech Farm, in the West Sussex countryside about five minutes’ drive from Billingshurst.
This site is about a mile and a half from the nearest A road, half an hour’s drive from the A3 and M23, and about 45 minutes from Junction 9 of the M25. All of that adds up to a quick-to-reach destination for residents of London and most of the South East, as well as easy access for those coming from further afield.
This is a fairly simple site with just essential facilities (toilet block, rubbish area and chemical disposal point), but it’s all well maintained. It’s a laidback place where families, dogs and groups are all welcome, but please note that campfires and barbecues are not allowed for safety reasons.
Bed down here and you’ll be in an excellent spot for all sorts of days out – the site is just outside the South Downs National Park for scenic walks and bike rides, and within easy reach of Chichester (40 minutes), the Goodwood Estate (35 minutes) and the beaches of the south coast (half an hour). Billingshurst has a good selection of shops and places to eat, plus a railway station for days out by train.

A great base for exploring the South Downs and all that West Sussex has to offer. For events at Goodwood or for walkers and cyclists on the South Downs Way, the site is also an ideal spot for escaping the crowds.
There are 20 non electric grass pitches onsite, each welcoming tents only. Each pitch allows up to six guests, with plenty of space for tents and gazebos with no extra charges other than on a per-person basis. Unloading is allowed by the pitches with parking in the designated car park.
Wake up to fantastic rural views and grab a bite to eat from the onsite cafe, which also serves a delicious cup of coffee. Days can be spent enjoying long walks in beautiful open countryside, exploring the charming nearby towns and villages, or down by the coast, only 25 minutes away.
In the evenings, guests can cook up a BBQ or relax by the campfire.

Hunker down in a historic village, surrounded by vineyards, hilly countryside and some rather spectacular views. With Ditchling Camping as your base, you’ll be on track for rural bike rides or visiting Brighton and its busy coast 25 minutes’ drive away. That’s because this dog-friendly site is in Ditchling – a village in the splendid South Downs National Park and a rather excellent location for all sorts of days out.
Good news if the whole family is tagging along: there’s plenty to play with around the site, including an adventure trail through the woodlands, a swing tree and places for kids to fashion their own little dens.
The site is only a five-minute drive (or a 30-minute walk) from the traditional Jack and Jill windmills and the neighbouring family-run pub, which serves both grub and good ales. A vineyard is 15 minutes’ walk away from the site if you'd like to include a wine-tasting tour on your break. Otherwise, simply pedal along country lanes on the surrounding cycling routes (it’s easy enough to hire a bike locally).
On your route, you might want to stop by in characterful Ditchling, home to local craftspeople and winemakers. There’s a nice selection of independent shops here, plus cosy cafés and pubs that will serve you a good spread of Sussex food, all within a 5-minute walk.
Back on site, end the day with a cosy evening beside the fire-pits. The site facilities are nicely straightforward otherwise and include warm showers and a separate dishwashing area and of course our newly installed Composting Toilets.

Hill Top Farm Wild Camping has just a few tiny pitches but the folk here keep the grass trimmed for easy pitching and you can park right next to the pitch. It's a tiny Wild Camping site with no running water, toilets or showers. What Noakes Meadow does have is plenty of space for you to enjoy and camp fires are definitely allowed. A wheelbarrow of fire wood can be purchased for £10 Cash/Paypal/Bank Transfer on arrival. This site is far away from the madding crowds though close to the M20 and A20 for easy access.
A mere 10-minute stroll along the road is a fab 16th-century country inn for food and pints. On the other hand you could always fire up a barbie and sizzle some sausages or grab a take away from the chippie 7 minutes away in the nearby village of Lenham.
This wild camping site operates a leave no trace policy so be prepared to bag up and take everything with you when you leave.

The campsite lies within seventeen acres on the slope of The Kent Downs, a designated area of natural beauty.
The Alma ale house at the edge of the farm serves Shepherds Neame and hot meals all year round.
Two acre quiet cherry orchard site based around a Tudor Manor house 1547 that gives its name to our village. Surrounded by orchards and open countryside but within easy reach of Faversham, Whitstable and Canterbury. Pitches for tents, campervans, motorhomes and touring caravans with or without electric hook up on a level grassy site. Pets are welcome and a crew member is always around the reception or farm to help out.
The Campsite is open from 1st march until 31st October.
The local area is awash with things to do. Faversham once the busiest port in 17th century England for its wool trade has the longest complete medieval street in the country. A wealth of little shops, cafes and pubs as well as the country’s oldest family owned brewery Shepherd Neame.
Whitstable sitting just along the coast, famed for its Oysters and Sunsets is a fun beachside community bustling in the summer months and hauntingly bleak in the winter ones. The World Heritage sites of Canterbury are just a fifteen minute trip away with all its well documented history and plentiful shops and eateries.

I loved camping at Tomkin's farm. The site is surrounded by beautiful countryside and there were lots of interesting meadow flowers, insects, birds, and animals to be seen in the area. The llamas, alpacas and bactrian camel were fascinating for the children and the llama behaviour in particular was of deep interest to the girl in our group.
The showers and toilet facilities were in good shape and water was good and hot. Signage for drinking water and women's only toilet could be clearer.
The footpath to the local pub was easy to follow and the pub itself was good.

The campsite is lovely and situated in beautiful countryside. Facilities are good, although signage around the women's only toilet and the drinking water tap, could be better. The showers are very hot, and the one cold shower was very welcome on the hottest days. It was lovely to walk to see the alpacas, llamas and camel - the latter of whom was very sensibly staying in the shade. The walk to the nearest pub is very pleasant!

This was a great campsite, they were very friendly. The facilities were basic but clean and functional. The cafe was great and the option of pizzas on Saturday and Sunday night was brilliant. The location was lovely and seeing the alpacas and camels was fantastic.

What a lovely campsite and host (Tim)! We camped at half term on a bank holiday weekend and despite lots of kids, was quiet and so relaxing with 20 private pitches. Lovely spacious, clean and well put together toilets, showers and washing areas. Great location, close to Lewes and the coast. Wildlife aplenty, with birdsong, bats and the odd pheasant wandering through the site. Recommended!

There's no fixed plots, you put your tent where ever you want, it seemed to work fine for everyone. And you should know that the option to get a firepit is only 30 minutes a day (unless you prearrange on WhatsApp) so you don't miss the window.
Otherwise a nice place in a nice area minutes away from a beach.

The campsite was exactly what we wanted for our first camping experience. Jayne and Mark were incredibly welcoming and friendly, the facilities were clean and well looked after, and the site felt safe and secure. It was peaceful being able to enjoy the countryside under clear skies full of stars. The site was easy to find and access, with plenty of space to relax. Thank you guys.

I stayed at this campsite one night, and overall, it was a really peaceful experience. The site is quiet and truly gives you that immersive outdoor feeling—you really feel like you’re out in nature. You can hear birdsong all around, and there’s no traffic or city noise—just calm. The facilities were also very different; the toilets, in particular, were compost toilets—no smells at all, was a different experience. My only minor downside is that the field itself is pretty steep—so if you’re not a fan of inclines, that might be a concern. But aside from that, it’s a fantastic spot for a quiet night under the stars.

We stayed two nights in our tent and loved the peaceful surroundings and beautiful nature. The campsite was very spacious, and the toilets were strategically located so you didn't have to walk far. The same went for the water taps. Finding a flat surface was definitely a challenge, as the whole field is more or less on a slope, which we had expected in advance. The owners/camp staff were very friendly and helpful, and other visitors to the campsite were considerate and quiet after dark. We didn't know it was a 'music-free' campsite, but we didn't mind that at all, and we enjoyed the sounds of nature instead. The showers were a bit of a walk, but they were spacious and had hot water. We also loved that bonfires were allowed and that you could buy logs, kindling, and fire starters on site. The 2 pm check-out time was perfect, as we could enjoy our morning and leave without a rush. We also heard The Cat Inn, which is nearby, has delicious food, but you have to book in advance, which we didn't, so we will need to check it out next time. We will definitely be back!

When to go
Visiting the Seven Sisters is a popular choice for day-trippers from London, and viewpoints can get crowded in July and August. Make an early start to snag a parking spot or opt for a weekday visit out of season to enjoy the views to yourself. Camping at Seven Sisters Country Park is possible from April through October only, but some campsites within the South Downs National Park stay open year-round.
Know before you go
- The Seven Sisters cliffs are located between Seaford and Eastbourne, along the south coast of Sussex. The main access points are from Seaford to the west, or Birling Gap in the east. Parking is available at both sites.
- There is a Visitor Centre, restrooms, a café, and paid parking at the Seven Sisters Country Park. From the park, it’s a 3-mile walk or drive to reach the cliffs.
- The Seven Sisters Country Park campsite is a walk-in, tent-only ground with toilets, a cold water shower, and drinking water. You’ll need to bring a stove and all other camping gear with you.
- The cliff-top walk is exposed, so wear hiking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. Coastal winds can be strong, so you might want a light jumper even in summer, and choose a hat with a neck strap.
- The cliff viewpoint at Birling Gap is wheelchair accessible.
