If you’re planning a holiday in the Peak District, Bakewell is a great place to consider as a base. As the only town in the national park, it’s a hub of independent shops and eateries where you can stock up on camping supplies and refuel with a sticky Bakewell pudding. But just because it’s the busiest part of the Peak District, doesn’t mean it’s any less picturesque. Situated on the banks of the River Wye, its stone buildings, medieval arched bridge, and weekly market will have you reaching for the camera. Campsites in Bakewell and the surrounding countryside also put you within easy reach of one of the Peak District’s most-visited attractions, Chatsworth House, seat of the Duke of Devonshire. Of course, the best attraction of all is the stunning countryside that surrounds nearly all campsites. Campers can find lots of great places to stay, from simple stone-walled meadow camping sites to modern, luxury glamping sites.

Bakewell itself has a Monday market, a small museum, and pleasant walking by the River Wye. It’s almost gone without saying that during any Bakewell camping holiday, you really ought to make a trip to the local bakery to try the town’s most famous export, its self-named pudding.
With its magnificent house, gardens, and farm, the Chatsworth Estate is within five miles of Bakewell. Medieval Haddon Hall is even closer and open to the public in summer.
Exploring the Peak District beyond the town is easy with almost unlimited opportunities for walking and cycling on open-access land and footpaths. The Monsal Trail, a former railway line, offers a family-friendly and traffic-free route for walkers, cyclists, and horse riders.
Farther afield, head south for riverside walks from Dovedale or north to climb up Mam Tor and Stanage Edge.
Explore pretty villages in the Hope Valley, then head underground into caves and caverns to explore the area’s geology from beneath the peaks.
A 10-minute walk from Bakewell takes you to the Thornbridge Brewery’s taproom and brewery tours.

We have a family friendly Quiet campsite in the heart of Lancashire on our family run farm. Our site is situated in a species rich meadow field with large mown Pitches surrounded by wild flowers and meandering pathways linking the site together. We are surrounded by a young trees & woodland with the back drop of the Pennines. We offer both glamping and traditional non EHU camping on our site, with lovely hot showers, clean toilet facilities, fresh water point, pot wash area, phone charger lockers, communal freezers, elsan disposal point, microwave, coffee/hot chocolate machine, and our little honesty shack with all little camping essentials to might need whilst staying with us. Adjoining the campsite, we have a padock with super frindly sheep that love to say hello. We sell little bags of sheep feed, just incase you'd like to give them a little treat. In the middle of the site, we have a little tots play area, perfect for keeping you're small kids entertained. We are a Quiet family site, with a Reduced Noise policy from 9 pm, and Quiet Time from 10 pm to 8.30 am. Latest check in time is 8PM, unless prearranged with the campsite. Our site has close links to the A6 and m6 J33. We are only 13 miles from the Historic city of Lancaster, the Bright lights of Blackpool and the jubilee city of Preston. 4 miles from the first fair trade market town of Garstang and 45 mins into the Lake District. There is also lots of interesting activities to do locally.

If you like the sound of having farm shops and ice cream farms nearby, as well as access to lots of walking and cycling trails, Stretton House Campsite should be a fine pick for you. It has a strict no noise policy after 10pm, meaning that you should get a peaceful night's sleep too. This site is in the grounds of the 400-year-old Stretton House surrounded by the Cheshire countryside with handy transport links nearby and outdoor activities in no short supply… that includes things like alpaca walking, golf or Manley Mere’s watersports haven (a 20-minute drive away for the latter). You’ll have your pick of two fields, both with car parking by the pitch free of charge and dogs allowed. The facilities include separate male and female toilet blocks, pay per use shower block, mobile phone charging facilities, free wifi and chemical toilet disposal and a drinking water standpipe. You’ll have permission to start up a barbecue or firepit too (subject to the correct safety measures). When you’re ready to get going, the friendly owners will be willing to help out however they can and suggest possible days out, which may include fishing or walking at Pickmere Lake (10 minutes’ drive), visiting an ice cream farm (within 10 minutes’ drive of the site) or going to the local golf course (five minutes’ drive). For food, there’s a farm shop just two minutes’ walk away from the site where you’ll be able to get your hands on local produce. Pubs aren’t far away either – there is one pub five minutes' walk away, and another 15 minutes' walk away. Festival goers are very welcome, and the Creamfields Festival site is five minutes’ drive away. Please respect the quiet hours (no noise is permitted after 10pm) and environment, as the owners' home is on the grounds (and stick to the field's facilities only). No waste accepted onsite. All rubbish must be taken home at the end of your stay.

A fantastic place to camp. The facilities were great the welcome was lovely and the views amazing. Will definitely be back for a longer stay. Linda and hubby were very helpful and made sure we had everything we needed. The facilities were clean and modern. The directions were clear and easy to follow. We enjoyed the fire pit and listening to the owls late into the evening. Will recommend to anyone looking to visit the area, and the eggs were delicious too.

We have just come back from a campervan 2 night trip to Panpwnton Campsite. We had a lovely time, it was very quiet as we were the only ones staying…. Probably due to the weather! This meant we got a great spot right next to the river which was perfect. The facilities were good. The location was great. We did a walk straight from the site on to part of Offa Dykes path and along to the Knuclas viaduct, great views along the way. We had thought we might get the train back just for fun, but they don’t run very often (would have been a 2hr wait) so walked back instead. Site also easy walking distance to the local pub for an evening meal which was good too. Very Dark walk back that evening meant for some great star gazing:-)

Weekend Trip to Secret Wood Glamping

Me and my partner came here for a much needed city break by tent and it was honestly amazing! The shower and toilet are seperate facilities and both clean, there is a kitchen too with a gas stove for cooking! The site is near anywhere you'd like to drive or even walk to around the peak district, and in the actual site itself you can see all the altitude and beauty around you. The air is incredibly fresh, and the owners of the campsite are really sweet and helpful. Will definitely come back for our next trip to the peak district this summer, thank you for having us :)

Panpwnton Farm is a lovely campsite. Very clean toilets and wash up facilities. I didn't use the showers as I only stayed a couple of nights, however they were spacious. I will definitely be returning for a longer stay. It's a lovely walk from the campsite to Knighton, alongside the river. Trains do pass right along the side of the site but it didn't bother me or my dog. Easy access to Offa's Dyke.

Where to go

Peak District National Park

Bakewell is in the Derbyshire Dales region of the Peak District National Park, which is characterised by its high moorland plateaus, steep limestone valleys, and cliffy outcrops, as well as relatively high peaks. Wild camping isn’t allowed in the park, as landowner permission is required, but campers can stay in formal campsites and caravan parks throughout the park.

Sherwood Forest

A rocky outcrop south of Bakewell, Robin Hood’s Stride makes a nod to the legend, but campers interested in Robin Hood should head east to Sherwood Forest. The royal forest is inextricably linked with the Robin Hood story in addition to offering excellent walking trails and ancient oak trees. Cannock Chase AONB

South of Bakewell and between the towns of Cannock and Stafford in Staffordshire, the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is a lovely area of woodlands, forests, canals, and rivers, plus some fascinating history, too, as it was the hunting forest of William the Conqueror almost 1,000 years ago. Visit on a day trip from Bakewell or stay at a caravan park around Cannock or Stafford to walk, cycle, or ride horses along the Cannock Chase trails.

When to go

Spring and summer are the best times to camp in and around Bakewell and the Peak District. The days are long in midsummer, especially this far north in England, and the weather is most pleasant for camping and outdoor activities. Winters can be cold in the Peak District, and snow isn’t uncommon in the hilly area. Some campsites and caravan parks close for winter, but booking a cabin or cottage may be possible for off-season visits.
