Gaspésie National Park camping guide

Overview

About

Deep in the inland of the Gaspé Peninsula, overlooking the coast on one side and the untouched forest on the other, stand the 25 distinct, 1000-metre peaks of Canada's Appalachian Mountains in Gaspésie National Park. The highest one, Mont Jacques-Cartier, towers at 1,270 metres above sea level and is certainly regarded as one of the most difficult yet rewarding hikes in Quebec, not unlike the trail of nearby Mont Albert in the Chic-Choc and Lac Cascapedia area. Regardless, the vast network of International Appalachian Trail offers options ranging from easy to very difficult, while also providing opportunities to spot caribou, arctic fauna, and alpine tundra. Visitors can also enjoy kayaking, SUP, canoeing, and fishing in summer. Although winter is slightly more complicated due to sometimes extreme weather conditions, snowshoeing, backcountry expeditions, and skiing are possible. As far as accommodations go, few places are more iconic than Gîte du Mont-Albert hotel, though the area also offers rustic winter camping and ready-to-camp cabins.

Notable campgrounds

  • Mont-Albert campground: A wooded haven close to hiking trails, offering semi-serviced sites with the comforts of home.
  • Cascapedia campground: Secluded semi-serviced sites near Lac Cascapedia, perfect for anglers and hikers alike.
  • Mont-Jacques-Cartier campground: Offers a rustic camping experience near the trail to the park's highest peak.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early, especially for peak season, to secure your ideal campsite amid the park's popular spots.
  • Consider visiting during the shoulder seasons for greater availability and a quieter experience.
  • Keep an eye on cancellations for last-minute opportunities to snag a spot in this sought-after park.
  • Explore nearby camping options for alternative accommodations when the park's campgrounds are full.

When to go

The best time to visit Gaspésie National Park is during the summer months when the trails are clear and the park's full splendour is on display. Winter offers a snowy paradise for backcountry skiing and snowshoeing, though some facilities may be closed.

Know before you go

  • Check the park's website for any trail closures or special advisories before your visit.
  • Be prepared for the park's mountain climate; pack layers and be ready for sudden weather changes.
  • Respect wildlife habitats, especially the vulnerable caribou; observe from a distance and follow park guidelines.
  • Some areas of the park may have limited accessibility; verify the availability of services and facilities prior to arrival.
  • Remember to purchase your park access pass online to guarantee entry, especially during busy seasons.
