Lachine Canal National Historic Site camping guide

Overview

About

A link between the city and nature, the Lachine Canal is located in the southwest section of Montreal. Its 13.5-kilometre urban route runs between the Old Port and Lake Saint-Louis, a navigable waterway punctuated by five locks. Along its banks, a linear green urban park is lined with vestiges of the industrial era when the canal boomed. Throughout the year, a varied schedule of activities makes this historic site a great place to experience with family or friends.

When to go

The best time to visit the Lachine Canal National Historic Site is during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is warm and the canal is bustling with activities. Winter offers a tranquil charm with its snowy landscape, but some facilities may be limited.

Know before you go

  • Always stay on the designated paths to ensure your safety and preserve the site's natural beauty.
  • Check the operation hours, as they vary seasonally, and some areas may be closed for maintenance.
  • Accessibility is a priority, with most paths and facilities designed to accommodate all visitors.
  • Remember to bring water and sun protection during the summer months, as the area can get quite sunny.
  • Engage with the site's history by visiting the various industrial vestiges and participating in the free online workshops offered.
