Point Porphyry Light Station is managed by Canadian Lighthouses of Lake Superior. Check out the lighthouse, mini-museum, and art gallery. Stay overnight in one of our 5-person bell tents, or bring your own tent and camp at our site, which includes a fire pit, outhouses, a sauna, and hiking trails. The island is located close to Sleeping Giant Provincial Park and makes a great side trip for your summer holiday! You'll love the charming red-and-white historic buildings, engaging tours and workshops, and volcanic black-sand beaches (just like Hawai'i). This place is a must-see! Porphyry Island is accessible only by boat. Regular shuttle service from Silver Islet is offered by Archie's Fishing Charters and Lighthouse Tours on Thursdays and Sundays, departing at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. and returning at 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Reservations must be made in advance through our website. NOTE: If you are using the regular charter service, your stay on Porphyry Island must be either 3 nights (Thursday to Sunday) or 4 nights (Sunday to Thursday). Shorter stays require arranging private charter services (see below). If you do not have your own boat, private charter trips can be booked for groups from Silver Islet with Archie's Fishing Charters and Lighthouse Tours or from Thunder Bay with Sail Superior. This year, we are offering a "Boathouse Folk School" series of creative workshops throughout the summer, hosted by our artists-in-residence and other local artisans. Check our website for details and to register for workshops as an add-on to your visit.

Camping at the Point (bring your own tent)

Tent site · Sleeps 4
Pitch your tent at the Point of Porphyry Island by the light tower, former lightkeepers' dwellings (now occupied by staff and volunteers over the summer), a fog alarm building, and helipad. This part of the island has a spectacular view of the Sleeping Giant landform (in a reverse perspective than you'd see from Thunder Bay) The majority of the island is a Provincial Nature Reserve. The docking area and lighthouse point are leased and managed by Canadian Lighthouses of Lake Superior. Campsites at the point include a fire pit, outhouses, and picnic tables. An easy, flat 1 km trail brings you to the docking area where you may use the sauna and propane bbq.
