Collin’s Wood is a very special place indeed. The land was bought by my grandfather years ago when he moved to Canada from England and wanted to chase his log cabin dream. Our main cabin my family built from trees on the land, entirely by hand. We have photos of the trees being cut and the bark being peeled off. Since then, we’ve made many changes out there, we now have a guest cabin that used to be a Teacheridge (back when teachers would live in a one room building beside the school), eventually it was turned into a cafe and now it sits on our land as a guest cabin. This place is so magical. With a quarter section of land I grew up running through the forest with my friends and learning about what the land has to offer. My parents have spent every spare weekend out there making this paradise into what it is today. All the buildings were created by my family through labour and love. We’ve hosted weddings, and family reunions. We hope you appreciate how special this place is. Come see for yourself!

Homegrown Campground and Cabins is nestled on the north shore of Lesser Slave Lake and I offer cozy camping areas with private lakefront views of Dog Island.
I currently have 4 camp sites, two of which have decks, and another site with one tiny cabin.

The property is also a Bison farm and I have two dogs, Luna and Pyro, who are the campground security managers. They love people and other furry friends! Please note that this campground/farm are my dogs home, and they may wonder over at some point and say hello. Please do not feed them, and use good judgment if you are traveling with dogs of your own. Aggressive dogs will not be tolerated. If my dogs overstay their welcome, or if you simply aren't a dog person, please let me know and I can come retrieve them.
Potable water is available, directions to it will be made available after checking in. Also, if any of the sites, garabge bin or outhouse needs attention, PLEASE let me know. I ask that you don't leave bags of garbage on the ground after checking out since birds, dogs, or bears will take that as an ivite to make a mess looking for a snack. I do have a full time job that prevents me from being around 100% of the time, so with your help, we can ensure a clean and safe campground for everyone to enjoy. There is a metal dumpster at the end of the road that can be used if needed.
Points of interest nearby include:
Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park, Devonshire Beach. 5-10 minutes away. You can't say you've been to Slave Lake with out saying you've been to Devonshire. Endless amounts of clean white "squeaky" sand and shallow waters perfect for summer beach days. You will never find a rock on the beach or in the water. The southern end of the park consists of sand ridges and blowout dunes, behind which are a series of marshes and wetlands.
Marten Mountain View Point (Lily Lake Trail). 15 minutes away. By far the best view of the lake that you will ever get! At 1020 meters, Marten Mountain is the highest point of land for hundreds of square kilometers. From the Marten Mountain Viewpoint, you can take in a truly breathtaking view of Lesser Slave Lake and its forested slopes. The view point is also the trail head to get to Lily Lake, a medium difficulty 4 km round trip. The cozy lake is stocked with trout and is an excellent afternoon adventure.
Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation. 5 minutes away. It is one of Canada's northernmost bird observatories and is one of the only boreal forest bird observatories in the world. Nice walking trails and a great information center with stunning architecture.
Gilwood Golf Course. 2 minutes away. Neighboring the property is an 18 hole golf course with a clubhouse and restaurant.
Activities nearby include fishing, hiking, wildlife watching, swimming, and so much more!

We had a great experience with Greg! Communication with him was excellent — he always responded very quickly and was very helpful. He welcomed us at check-in and made sure everything was ready for our stay. The campsite was very quiet and peaceful, and having a portable bathroom and garbage disposal available at the site was very convenient. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend this place!

1 night at Collinswood Retreat
What a beautiful relaxing spot!! The Happy Hut was the perfect size for me as a solo traveler and the bed was super comfortable. The outdoor bath was amazing, it took a while to fill to a comfortable level but that’s expected! Bathing in nature is a must! The bathroom was close by and very welcoming for an outdoor bathroom. No harsh smells and very clean.
The Happy Hut wasn’t as private as I thought however this actually worked out for me in the end, as a solo female traveler it was comforting to know I wasn’t completely isolated in the woods! Very much enjoyed my relaxed evening sitting by a fire and soaking up nature.

Greg accommodated us with very short notice and with us arriving late. He also gave us a very nice site. The property was beautiful with great views, and it really helped us out to snag a good camping spot like this so close to Waterton last minute.

Weekend Trip to Collinswood Retreat
My experience at the yurt was exceptional. It was the perfect blend of camping and amenities. The barbecue, utensils, provided firewood (and axe), along with the roominess of the Yurt made for a carefree comfortable. The yurt is in a secluded clearing in the wood so you feel like there is nobody else around yet the area has a lot of trails in case you need to walk somewhere. The hosts were very friendly and I would definitely recommend this rental.

We instant-booked Greg’s campsite after our travel plans changed at the last minute and we had to find somewhere to stay ASAP. My boyfriend and I decided to head to Waterton since it was the only place without rain, but every affordable hotel and campground was completely booked.
We’d never used Hipcamp before, but Greg’s property came up on Google, so we booked three nights, and honestly, it was one of the best decisions of our trip!
Greg is incredibly friendly and welcoming. We loved our evening chats and listening to his stories. He’s funny, genuine, and made us feel right at home.
Since our plans changed so suddenly, we forgot firewood. Greg sold us some for only $10, and despite a few reviews saying otherwise, it burned great, there was lots of it, and it was a much better deal than buying wood in town.
The property is only about 20 minutes from Waterton with beautiful mountain views. The bats kept the mosquitoes away, so evenings around the campfire were actually enjoyable! We were even lucky enough to see the aurora and spend hours stargazing under an incredibly clear sky.
Overall, we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. We originally stayed because we had no other options, but we’d gladly come back just for Greg’s hospitality. Thank you for making our trip so memorable, we’ll definitely be back and highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Waterton!

Geri & Pat and their friendly security pooch Piper were very welcoming and helpful. Shady Nook was perfect for me, and I wish I could have stayed longer! I took a long walk around the property and enjoyed the unique sites and happy vibe they have created. I’ll be back :)

We absolutely loved camping here. Pat and Geri were so lovely and welcoming. On our first night we booked another weekend coming up. It’s our new favourite spot.
We spent a lot of time walking some of the trails and taking in nature.
They were also kind enough to lend us a hand when our car didn’t start as we were leaving. 10/10!

4 nights at Collinswood Retreat
This was the best possible place to spend a rainy long weekend with my dogs! Spent hours wandering the trails right there on the property and retreated back to the cozy cabin when the rain picked up. Loved sitting under the covered deck with a book and seeing the sunrise over the river valley, and the outdoor shower had an excellent view (and hot water). Made good use of the sauna and THOROUGHLY enjoyed my massage (do it, trust me!). The cabin was adorable, bed was very comfortable, and the blackout curtains meant I was able to sleep in past sunrise.

The land the sites are on as well as the surrounding area are beautiful. The grounds were well kept and felt secluded thanks to being in a valley surrounded by lots of trees and it was great to fall asleep to the sound of Gladstone Creek every night. All of us were sad to head back to reality, including our dog, at the end of the trip.
Good communication from Corey throughout and met him while we were at site. This location is bookmarked for sure.

Weekend Trip to Hidden Springs Retreat & Guesthouse
My boyfriend and I had a very last minute booking but Barb was very kind and accommodating. We were lucky enough to have the whole space to ourselves well except for Barb’s dog, Fox, who is just the most affectionate and behaved companion out there. I would recommend booking the sauna it was very relaxing and for 2hrs it is quite worth the price, Barb even offered to let us shower in her house after if we wanted. The beds were very comfortable and provided plenty of warmth during the night. Overall it is a great site to book with lots of field and plenty of things to do.

Weekend Trip to Collinswood Retreat
This is my second time staying at Collinswood, and a second glowing review of their property. The forest yurt is incredibly beautiful and well themed, and the feeling of seclusion is a lot of fun! It’s like the outside world is a completely separate planet. Geri and Pat put in a ton of work to make this place a wonderful time and it shows in every little bit of their sites, from the inclusion of board games to the cute themed slippers in the yurt. I’m already thinking about my next visit, and we just got home! If you’re looking for a fun weekend out under the stars for you and a few others, I don’t think there’s a better place to stay than here.
