~ Voted West Virginia's No. 1 HIPCAMP, three years in a row!! ~ The Byrd's Nest is a river front, primitive campsite on the scenic Cacapon River in Great Cacapon, WV. The property is very secluded, but only 2 hrs from D. C. and Baltimore. The space can accommodate 5 tents comfortably or a few small campers (w/o hookups). Please note- I only book one group at a time. You'll have plenty of privacy! Spend your day bird watching on the river deck, put up your hammock and chill, go hiking or mountain biking at Cacapon State Park, take the kayaks out and paddle around, go fishing, or take a float trip. I can provide info on put in/take out spots depending on how long you'd like to float. I have 3 kayaks available for your use, or BYO if you'd like to venture further outside of the property lines. There is one big fire ring for cooking and/or bonfires, along with a large stationary stand up charcoal camp grill. There is also a small communal shed down at camp that contains extra camping supplies, etc.. feel free to use use and put back and or/ contribute to it! :) This spot is close by to Berkeley Springs, Paw Paw Tunnel, Cacapon State Park, and other nature preserves. More hiking, biking, restaurants, spas, antiquing- all within a beautiful 20 minute drive if you wish to venture out. There is a cabin on the property. I will more often be home than not, I will communicate with you about that around your stay. Sometimes I"ll come down to the river frontage if I drop in for a float .Also, we all get around on four wheelers and UTV's. So you will hear them from time to time. If I am home, please feel free to come up if you have any concerns/questions or to say hi! :) *Please note, you can normally get to this site without a 4 wheel drive vehicle. However, when the river is high it will sometimes flood the low water bridge where it crosses the Cacapon. If this is the case during your stay, I will provide all necessary information regarding projected river levels and directions. I will also offer a full refund if the bridge is impassable. *UPDATED LISTING, JULY 2024!* (previously a primitive campsite:) ~ WINTER INFO ~ -Hoses, outdoor sink and shower are winterized for the season. Feel free to BYO propane heater suitable for tent use! There is a portable radiator in there, but keep in mind the cabin is not insulated and has minimal electrical capacity. It will just take the edge off of the cold. The Crow’s Nest Glamping Cabin is on the same property as (but not adjacent to) The Byrd’s Nest river front campsite. It can be booked along with The Byrd’s Nest site for larger groups based on availability, or on its own. The space is perfect to accommodate anyone who wants to enjoy the woods but is not into primitive camping! You’ll have full access to a 10x16 glamping cabin within a wide, flat, gravel area surrounded by the woods. It’s equipped with a queen bed, a chair that folds out to a twin, and a large cot to sleep 4 people inside the cabin. The space can also accommodate 2 large or 3 medium sized tents if someone in your group wants to tent camp during your stay! (One small camper would also fit in the space as well but w/o hookups at the moment.) You will see a barn style shed in some of the site pictures, please note that it is a storage shed. The Crow’s Nest is situated in a way that you will have plenty of privacy. BYO sheets or sleeping bags, pack like you're camping, but enjoy all the amenities of the cabin! Kick back and relax with the expansive DVD collection and plenty of books/games to keep you occupied on rainy days (or any day!) There’s also a strong fan to curve any heat along with two functioning windows. The double doors open into a secluded view of the woods, the fire pit area and a hammock nook with string lights nestled within the trees. Of course you can also see the movie you’re watching while sitting by the chiminea too, as the TV can swing to face out of the double doors ;) There’s a porta john, a large outdoor shower, and a dedicated WiFi space for your use. The cabin has low voltage electric inside (for charging phones and the like) and cold running water via the laundry tub sink outside your door. There’s a regular hose as well if you need one at the hydrant pump out front. River access on the property *will only be available for your use between guests* at The Byrd’s Nest site if it is unoccupied during your stay, or if its booked along with your group. (See site map for clarity) I will communicate the availability with you the day before you arrive. Otherwise, there are a few public stream access spots a short drive down the road that you can enjoy. BYO canoe, kayak, tubes and adventure away:) I can provide info on put in and take outs if you'd like to float down river. You can also take a hike in Cacapon State Park, nearby Eidolon Nature preserve, spend your day at the farmers market or themed weekend festivals in Berkeley Springs state park along with the spas/shops/eateries - or simply enjoy the space at Crow’s Nest. *Please note, you can normally get to this site without a 4WD vehicle. However, when the river is high it will sometimes flood the low water bridge where it crosses the Cacapon on Rock Ford road. This typically happens in early spring. If this is the case during your stay, I will provide all necessary information regarding projected river levels and directions. I will also offer a full refund if the bridge is impassable and you decide not to come. You will absolutely need 4 wheel drive with clearance and it takes about 30 minutes longer and a sense of adventure- but you'll be rewarded with beautiful views and waterfalls at the switchbacks:) This route in is only an option when the bridge is flooded, as it is a private road that has many gates. I will provide all necessary information before your stay regarding projected river levels and directions. I will also offer a full refund if the bridge is impassable and you decide not to come. Sadly, the floating dock you see in the older pictures did not make it through the river ice last winter. However, the deck is now turned into another tent platform! This is an idyllic spot to camp and Cara provides everything you could need! The fairy lights were so cute and a great touch. It even poured and stormed while we were here, but we were dry and cozy all night under the roofed platform. I’ll definitely be coming back.

Peaceful glamping on the river!

Kara's space is SO beautiful and really exceeded our expectations -- so much so that we booked an extra night! The crows nest was perfect for my partner and I and the communal space down by the river is gorgeous. The string lights, multiple platforms, big fire pit, and sound of the river made us feel so easeful. It's also very conveniently located close to Berkeley Springs and Cacapon State Park. Highly recommend.

The Crow’s Nest was great. A perfect little spot next to the river. We had some rainy weather on Saturday, so it was nice to be able to use the furnished cabin/shed during the rain. We plan on going again.

Peaceful get-away!

Absolutely fantastic! Beautiful, peaceful, and all you would ever need is on site. We rented both the campsite and shelter. The view is amazing, there is a PortaJohn, solid places for tents, hammock, etc.

Paradise on the River.

Wow, what a perfect campsite on the water! This place has everything you need and then some. There was a bouquet of lovely flowers on our picnic table when we arrived. The dry firewood bundles available for only $5 were right there at the site, and the shed with supplies came in handy when my air mattress broke. It had several cots! We took the kayaks out for a spin for a view from the water. The hammock was perfect for relaxing and the shelter was a lovely space to sit and watch the thunderstorm that rolled through. The sink next to the camp supply shed was so convenient for washing our dishes. The WiFi available at the site worked great too! Kara was so easy to get in touch with and was very communicative and kind. This is the place, folks!

What a fantastic get away. I highly recommend visiting. It’s extremely peaceful. The set up of both the small cabin and camping area is great. We were able to completely relax and enjoy the weekend!

Relaxing quiet and clean!

The property was very easy to get to via a scenic drive. The cabin was really cute inside and very clean. The site was also very nice, clean, private and quiet! Night skies were dark and the stars were bright! The property was just around the bend from a cute little village with coffees shops, shopping and a nice Farmer’s market. There is also a slow ( at least it was for our visit) clear river that the property sits on with limited access - see site notes. Kara communicated everything that we needed to know and sent us detailed directions and instructions. We really enjoyed our day and wished that we could have stayed longer!

Our annual Men’s Camping Weekend

My friends and I absolutely love everything about this site. We have had our annual Mens camping trip for the last 10 years and this campsite was by far the BEST!!! Kara is an excellent host and she has setup this site with everything you would need to have a great time. I have already reached out to Kara and let her know that we will be back for sure during the summer with all of our kiddos to take advantage of the beautiful river right next to the site. THIS IS A MUST STAY for anyone who loves camping. Thanks Kara!!!

Reserved the cabin (Crow’s nest) for a little post Thanksgiving getaway and really enjoyed it. The site was well kept and private with the main “patio” opposite the driveway. Inside the cabin was awesome and pretty comfortable even with door of us and a dog. It was chilly (there’s a small space heater that helped) but comfortable in our sleeping bags with a movie on. I think it would be great to come back in the summer and check out the river.

Peaceful day in the Crow's Nest

This is one of the few cabins that can fit more than two people. It might feel like it's in someone's backyard, but don't worry—nobody pays attention to you. The cabin faces the woods, so it feels private, and there's plenty of firewood. It sleeps four people—two on the bed and two on the cot. The toilet is clean, and the mattress and blankets are super comfortable. **Pros:** - Clean toilet - Has a sink - Unlimited firewood - Spacious for a group - Quiet location - Nice entrance from the main road **Cons:** - The small gravel road has a lot of traffic, and some drivers slow down to look at the area. Someone mentioned it’s not very private, but sometimes you have to make trade-offs. I still recommend this place and will definitely come back.

A Relaxing Fall Weekend Camp

I had the pleasure of staying at The Byrd's Nest on the River in Great Cacapon. This campground offers a fantastic primitive plus camping experience, perfectly blending comfort with nature. The site is right on the river, which provides a constant, soothing water sound throughout your stay. The thoughtful touches, like solar string lights strung through the trees, really add to the ambiance at night. There are also two low-power electrical outlets with extension cords, making it easy to charge devices or add extra lights to your setup. The fire pit at this site is excellent — large enough for a big, cozy fire, and there’s plenty of places nearby (on your way to Byrd's Nest) to purchase firewood for a very reasonable price. If you're into tent camping, you’ll appreciate the two sturdy wood platforms, perfect for setting up tents or simply hanging out with your group. There are also two picnic tables, which were great for meal prep and dining. Kara, the host, was welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed. My whole group had a wonderful time during our fall camping trip. Whether you're a seasoned camper or new to the outdoor scene, The Byrd's Nest on the River is an excellent spot to enjoy nature in comfort. Highly recommend!

We loved camping at The Crow's Nest. The space is so cozy and cute and is an absolutely perfect get away in the beautiful woods of WV. It is truly a great spot to disconnect and get in some R and R and Kara is the best host!

Everything was as described in the listing. Kara was responsive and warned us about the fire ban before coming and was being understanding if we wanted to cancel due to that but we went anyways. I’d love to go back when the fire ban is lifted!

The fact that you can have the cabin but not access to the river or the rest of amenities really takes away from the experience. The cabin feels like you’re just in someone’s backyard, not out in nature.

We had a wonderful time at the crows nest! Secluded and quiet, just what we were looking for. Great vibe inside and out. Really comfortable bed and an extensive library of dvds which we enjoyed more than we thought we would as there was a fire ban. River was beautiful and refreshing. We were able to take a quick dip during the sunny day in November. We booked last minute and Kara was very quick to respond. We got in late and she made sure the lights were on for us. Highly recommend!

Charming cabin in the woods

My fiancé and I spent our 10 year anniversary here and it was so private, peaceful and romantic. The outdoor shower located under the host house was by far my favorite spot 😍 Kara was extremely helpful and kind! You can tell she truly put so much love and care into this property. We were there for 3 nights and were still noticing charming details as we were leaving. We definitely will be coming back in the summer to take advantage of the clear swimming hole :)

Kara’s site was wonderful! The perfect combination of tent camping and a cabin. There were many thoughtful touches throughout the site, and the space inside is decorated beautifully. The area is stunning and the town was lovely to explore. We are already looking forward to coming back! There is another campsite on the property but they are very nicely spaced, we couldn’t hear the other site during our stay so it still felt very private. We highly recommend this site!

A wonderful place to stay

We loved the Crow’s Nest! Really easy to find, the campsites and cabins are spaced out nicely so you have lots of privacy. You can hear the folks down at the river spot when they’re rowdy but in general it’s very peaceful! We were traveling with our dog who always barks at people and other dogs but he barely noticed anything with the layout of the camp. We slept great with our sleeping bags on the bed and enjoyed watching Contact with the sound of crickets in the background! Kara was a wonderful host and we really appreciated the warmth and inclusivity!

Family camping 🏕️

This site was amazing. So much space, and every single detail is thought through. We had a flawless time. The water is so calm and was so great for our kids to play with all the water toys. The shower came in clutch, and there was plenty of space for preparing food and lounging. Kara was the perfect host and gave us tons of privacy, as well as all the information we needed ahead of time. We cannot wait to return.

Okay, wow. This space is adorable and lovely and (insert many, many more positive adjectives here). I booked a last minute weekend away and this spot delivered on solitude and serenity. Highlights include the hammock spot where I spent 95% of my time and the outdoor shower. This location is conveniently located near many beautiful hiking spots. My favorite was Devil’s Nose. We will be back for sure!

Amazing lil’ slice of heaven!

We had the best time at the Byrd’s Nest! It’s quiet and peaceful, and perfectly situated right at the river’s edge. We loved it so much that we stayed on site for the entire duration of our trip. It was sufficiently equipped for primitive camping, there was ample firewood to have campfires. The primitive cooking area was perfect for making meals! Having a sturdy deck to pitch our tent was a huge bonus, and it was right at the river’s edge. So peaceful! Our favorite feature was the lean-to shelter, which we tied our hammocks to. Felt amazing to relax, recharge and read some books! This campsite is also great for fishing, just steps away. The port-a-John is located on site just a short stroll up the gravel driveway, and was very clean and well stocked. If you’re looking to stretch your legs for the day, Berkeley Springs is ~ 25 mins away, we stopped on our way out of town and there were so many cute shops to browse, grab coffee, etc. Putting this Hipcamp in our ‘favorites’ tab so we can come back again soon!
