Operating for over 40 years, this bush camp and rainforest retreat is often described as one of Australia’s most unique stays — and it really does feel that way. With a blend of rustic rainforest charm, a touch of Asia and South America in its building style, and a good dose of Aussie humour and hospitality, it’s a place that feels timeless. Four clear creeks flow all year into an absolutely stunning swimming hole, the largest and deepest in Finch Hatton Gorge. The camp facilities are off-grid but offer powered sites. You’ll find all the modern comforts: flushing toilets, beautiful hot showers with rainforest views, large camp kitchens with everything you need (including a pizza oven and USB charging ports), and peaceful dining areas where you can hear the creek. Accommodation options: – Powered or unpowered sites to suit all setups — some with private decks overlooking the creek, some shaded, some sunny for solar. – Tent-only sites on the grassy area near the main fire pit (no vehicles on the grass; parking close by). – Three private creekside huts/treehouses with stunning views, comfy beds, and full bedding. There’s a central fire pit with seating and a cooking plate, plus an undercover fireplace and dining area for rainy nights. You’re also welcome to bring your own fire pit. We’re in the Pioneer Valley, just outside Mackay, Queensland, 2 km from Finch Hatton Gorge in Eungella National Park — about 1 hour from Mackay or 2 hours from Airlie Beach along a beautiful drive. Site 2 or the dream site is our best and most private site, t’s tucked away in the corner with a huge deck that literally goes over the top of the creek and you have a BBQ and fire pit too :) It's 15 x 5m and it is shaped a little triangular but plenty of room and can accommodate everything from large coach style motorhomes, 5 wheel caravans, cars, rooftop tents, camper vans or caravans. We are off grid site but with all the modern amenities like flushing toilets, stunning hot showers with rainforest views (if you like), large fully equipped camp kitchens with everything you need, there is even a pizza oven and usb charging ports and you can see and hear the water from the kitchen and the dining area. You will have a beautiful and large kitchen that you share with the 2 huts and the crew that has everything you need like fridges, BBQ, usb and 240 charging ports, undercover fireplace and dining area where you can see and hear the water. It's incredible and there is even a beautiful little island for morning coffees just near your hut. Here you have a hut that the Kids and the Adults love with a great view of the creek below. you have 3 single beds down the bottom and 2 up top so you can sleep 5 comfortably and the hut is enclosed so don't worry about any bugs :) you are close to all the facilities including an awesome kitchen on the creek with bbq, fridge, usb and 240 charge points and a really awesome dining area with fireplace. The swimming hole is 30 seconds from your hut and parking is close by too.

We recently stayed at this incredible Platypus Bush camp by the creek, and it was an unforgettable experience. The tree houses are absolutely magical—nestled in the trees with just the right mix of comfort and rustic charm. Ours had a spacious king bed that made it feel more like a boutique retreat than a campsite. The creek itself is the real highlight. The camp spots sit right along the water, giving you peaceful views and the calming sound of running water all day and night. Whether you're relaxing in a chair by the creek or waking up to the soft morning light filtering through the trees, the whole place feels serene and refreshing. Everything is well maintained, clean, and thoughtfully laid out. It’s the perfect spot for anyone looking to relax, recharge, and enjoy nature without sacrificing comfort. Highly recommend—this is one of those hidden gems you’ll want to visit again and again!

This is an absolute gem. Beautiful spot in the untouched forrest of Finch Hatton Gorge. Easy access with our caravan and the sites are very generous is size with power ,water and your own shelter to use. Beautiful outdoor/ forest showers and toilets with a view. We loved the fresh water creeks running and the quiet surroundings. The owner Shane was very helpful ,friendly and easy to talk to. Would highly recommend this spot

Parked van on site 9, great site for shade. Close to road but not a lot of traffic, caravan sites further down look good, power is a bonus. Shane is continually upgrading the campground and will be amazing when completed

This place is absolutely BEAUTIFUL, n can’t wait to visit again. We were lucky enough to book “The Dream Site” which is definitely the pick of the camp. Absolutely loved the showers and common area with the hammocks, swing seat, fairy lights and waking up to the sound of the water flowing every morning. The owner and staff r chill as, n extremely welcoming. 5 stars all the way 🤩

This bush camp is absolutely stunning—it’s clear a lot of love and hard work have gone into creating it. It’s everything a bush camp should be: peaceful, full of unique art, and a wonderful way to be immersed in the beauty Finch Hatton has to offer. The creek-front sites are particularly special, with gorgeous decks overlooking the water. The only small drawback is that privacy can be a little limited between sites, but overall it’s a beautiful, memorable place to stay.

We loved our stay at Platypus Bush Camp. The deck was the perfect spot to enjoy meals, read a book and relax with privacy. It was a great little addition that also helped with our dashie who comes along on our camping trips too. The sound of the running water had a white noise effect and was beautiful to fall asleep to. Gabby was so welcoming and helpful. She is a true asset to the camp. We would highly recommend to anyone looking to get off grid. We will be back again!

Had a great stay, our spot looked over the stream with a little deck. Loved it, only thought is that these 4 sites are really close to each other. We had lovely Neighbours though and really enjoyed the camp kitchen, watching for platypus and the lovely hot rainforest showers. We’ll be back and bring our kids to share a few spots. Looks fantastic for a larger group as well as private sites to hide away in.

Situated on a meandering Creek on the road to Finch Hatton Gorge, this lovely spot has a lot to offer. The camp kitchens and shared facilities are top notch. Some of the best we have seen in our travels. The only con with the camp kitchen was no hot water.The pizza oven was really useful. The toilets and showers with rainforest views are sensational. The water was hot and the view into the rainforest as you showered was amazing. We booked one of the private deck spots (Site 5) but would recommend booking a different area. Whilst the private deck is absolutely awesome, you do get all of the arriving traffic and people passing through. The camp kitchen we were closest to was also not as lavish as the main one near the office.

What an amazing place to stay, the only problem was 2 nights weren't long enough. It was extremely clean and the staff so helpful and friendly. All the sites looked great, but the Dreamsite is the pick. We have an ensuite in our van, but had to try the showers out.

This place was amazing! We stayed on site 9 which appeared to be the largest and most private. We loved the privacy aspect. The grounds are clean and beautifully kept. The toilets are great and the open yet private warm water bush showers were a highlight. The sound of the stream is wonderful and other than that the camp is quiet overnight. We loved it and will be back.

What a magical place! Just amazing to be immersed in nature, amongst the rainforest and to be able to bring our doggie. We had such a great, truly relaxing, time! Site 3 had a great little deck area overlooking the creek but a tricky angle to reverse into. Our small caravan only just fit. Site 2 has more room and probably better suited to a caravan.
