Nestled amongst the mountains just outside of the township of Whittlesea our 40-acre property sits above the clouds. The hut has a double bed (bedding provided), undercover of the veranda is a gas stove with two burners and a grill, outside a long drop toilet, water tank (not drinkable) but drinkable water will be provided. The hut is close to one of the dams. Only one booking at a time so you won’t be sharing camping site with anyone. Owners live on the property but out of view and ear shot. A picnic set, kettle, camp stove and saucepans available for use. Solar lights inside, internal wood heater outside fire pit. Note no shower. Basic amount of wood provided for internal heater and cost $10 milk crate of wood for external fire pit, a crate should last a couple of hours. Take the opportunity to explore the night sky with a large telescope. A guided 90 minute star gazing experience using 500mm diameter telescope is offered for $50/session to guests of the antechinus hut. Depending on the time of year you will see galaxies, nebulae, star clusters and planets. This is only offered when conditions allow, clear skies and minimal moon. Note this activity involves use of step ladder due to size of telescope. There is also solar astronomy, view viewing the sun through hydrogen alpha telescope. $30 for 30minutes There are great bike rides off and on road, close to Cairn Curran (15km) for fishing and kayaking, also plenty of bushwalks and bird watching sites nearby. Beautiful little bush getaway nestled under the gum trees. The spot is peaceful, quiet, and full of things to learn about the surrounding land. The hosts were incredibly accommodating and even mapped out a walking route around the property, which was genuinely interesting. Highly recommend for anyone considering a visit. Plenty of wildlife, and the inside is super cosy with the wood-fired heater.

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at Sommerleigh! Gorgeous location that had everything we needed, nestled in nature and surrounded by so many birds. It felt intimate and private, perfect for a romantic weekend away. The wood stove was absolutely divine and rainy weather was no problem because it was so cosy rugged up indoors by the fire watching the rain through the big windows and hearing the rain on the tin roof. Jeff was lovely and made sure we knew everything we needed to know before leaving us to it. I highly recommend this special gem of a stay!

Jeff has spent an enormous amount of time and effort in creating this special place. With 158 different bird species, set amongst the wetlands, there is a theatre of wildlife only 90 minutes from Melbourne. The room is well appointed and many finer details often overlooked on your more tradition accommodation. Everything you need is provided, just remember to read the notes before hand as we failed to do, ie bring ice for the provided esky. It's combines the best attributes of a tiny house with plenty of space to cook, sleep, chill out and relax.

Weekend Trip to Sommerleigh
My partner and I adored our weekend in this little slice of paradise! Tucked away on a tiny island in the middle of a billabong on Jeff's vineyard, it was pure peace. We were the only ones on the island, aside from many different birds. We loved waking up to their songs, and the sound of rain on the tin roof. No traffic, no other people, just nature and a beautifully quirky bushland garden dotted with old treasures. The setup was simple but magical, very clean and well maintained: two cosy tin shacks (bedroom and kitchen) plus a small loo shack with a flushing toilet! The bedroom was warm and snug with a fireplace and comfy double bed. BYO bedding. No mains power or fridge, so bring ice for the cooler and a battery pack to charge devices, though we barely touched our phones. The outdoor showers (one next to the bedroom, and one behind the kitchen) were surprisingly lovely, even in the rain, thanks to hot gas-heated water. Jeff was a friendly, funny, and accommodating host who welcomed us warmly even though we arrived a little late and in the dark. Bring a torch, hot water bottle, and warm layers in winter. Notes on accessibility: You'll need to carry all your belongings from the car over a narrow pier and gravel path, a 1-2 minute walk total, which is very doable if you're able-bodied, and Jeff said he can offer a wheelbarrow to help. A peaceful, grounding spot, perfect for bird watchers, nature lovers, and anyone wanting to truly switch off. We’ll definitely be back.

Really wonderful weekend escape. My partner and puppy and I enjoyed a farm stay here at Anne Maree's cute cabin. It had everything we needed and was easy to find, the farm grounds are huge and we couldn't even manage to walk the whole property! Friendly dogs on the farm that would visit us. The cabin it Esse was lovely and well presented, heating, comfy bed, kitchen with everything needed and am amazing bathroom with rain shower. The jacuzzi looked lovely but it was raining the entire stay, and it was not working anyway(the owner was extremely apologetic about this, and made up for it, by offering other alternatives and also made us home made scones, lamb shank soup and some other goodies, she didn't need to do this however Anne Maree was lovely and a proper host) this made us feel so comfortable and welcome and we already want to go back!! Hoping the rain is not there and the jacuzzi is fixed the next time we are there, Thankyou Ann Maree for a wonderful stay

Horse Riding - Doran Park Trail Rides is 1 km away and provides arranged horse trail rides, must book in advance. Or bring your own horses to the Shedquarters, there's heaps of room for them to safely and comfortably stay (we are a horse property). Paddocks and a large yard, places to park the float and hay deliveries on request. A homemade grassed arena with jumps available. On the wet days an indoor arena is available to book 5kms away, advanced bookings required. Local Wineries within driving distance, Clyde Park Winery, Buninyong Winery. Great area for Gold Prospecting. Great place for wood collection, bring the trailer for some hard work (check to see if the forest wood collection is available) Bungal Dam picnic area. Ballan market is held on the second Saturday of the month 9-1pm Ballarat is a 30 minute drive.
