Weekend Trip to Colo River Hut

The Colo Hut was a great spot , not too far from Sydney yet far enough to feel away from it all. The hot shower was an added bonus in the cold and having a sink was extremely convenient. The river is a few steps away from the site, we tried fishing but had no luck. The fire pit was great for cooking and keeping warm. Thanks Richard for sharing your property!

We had a wonderful one-night stay at this tiny container home tucked away in the mountains. Despite the overcast weather, the charm of the place more than made up for it. The home was thoughtfully designed, cozy, and had everything we needed for a comfortable getaway. The peaceful surroundings and fresh mountain air made for a truly relaxing escape. Even with the clouds overhead, we enjoyed every moment—from sipping coffee while taking in the misty views to unwinding in the quiet serenity of nature. It’s the perfect retreat for anyone looking to disconnect and recharge. Highly recommend this little gem—we’d love to come back, hopefully with clearer skies next time!

We loved our stay at Nos Astra! John was wonderful to communicate with and was very accomodating to our trip plans. He gave us plenty of information for our stay and the place was beautiful! The views were gorgeous and was awesome to walk around and explore the property. It’s hard for us to find pet friendly places, so this one was superb and our staffy had a blast. And to have it all to ourselves! Will definitely be staying again.

This is a beautiful spot for a group to take full advantage of excellent amenities (including a spotless hot water shower and toilet) for a relaxing break. We had a bit of rain on our trip, and the large roofed-in deck made an excellent shelter for our tents to sit under. The river access is best in the afternoon (steep and muddy bank during morning high tide)

2 nights at Nos Astra

We loved Nos Astra, and had a wonderful time. The property is lovely and exactly as described. The views are incredible and there is plenty of space to explore. We ended up staying when it was very rainy, but the house had everything we needed (we managed to get a fire going, roasted marshmallows and watched movies on the projector). The kids also loved exploring - rain and all. The shower hot water was incredible (I wasn’t sure how much hot water would be available but was totally fine - which was helpful in the rain!) and surprisingly there was ZERO smell from the toilet (again, we thought there’d be a slight smell but there wasn’t at all). If you’re looking to get away from the hustle and bustle, and a great place to go exploring close to Sydney - I’d highly recommend!

4 nights at Nos Astra

Positives: This property is outstanding. I can’t rate it highly enough. The container cabin is well insulated and well appointed. The amenities made our stay very comfortable. Favourite aspects: soft, comfortable bed, fire pit outside, inside wood fired heater (we used both on different days), the utterly spectacular view, the bellbirds and other bird life, and of course the stargazing. Drawbacks: it’s a long drive (we came from Canberra. Due to roadworks and traffic, it took 6 hours, including 2 short breaks. The navigator said 3hrs45. It took 7 hours on the way back). We had a 2-wheel drive and would have been able to do and see more with a 4WD. Next time…!

We had a beautiful long weekend at Colo river hut. The hut was a great place to have dinner and enjoy a shower. Great to have the whole place to ourselves and enjoy the beautiful sunsets over the field. The host provided firewood and was very helpful with directions and answered a couple of questions.

Weekend Trip to Halifax Hill

This shack oozes soul and creativity. We loved our stay. The separate bedroom is beautiful, the main living area more rustic. We loved the large kitchen and excellent gas stove and all the comfy couches, (that 4 of us slept on), and we all sat around play board games and chatting into the evening. We enjoyed a family meal at the table in the garden surrounded by the beautiful bush. A river swim on inflatables at the swimming hole 200m down the road, and taking the dog to play on the long stretches of the river sand bed a half a kilometre to the north, immersed us further in the stunning nature of the area. The early convict settler history of the area - the old cemetery, St Albans pub and the Convict Trail - also provided us with plenty to do beyond the shack. It was a joy and honour to stay in the creative home of Halifax and enjoy this beautiful part of Australia. Thank you, Helen and Steve.

The Bell Tent was amazing! We enjoyed every single minute of it and the hosts were very accommodating and welcoming. The pizza was very delicious and sitting by the firepit drinking our complementary beers kept us warm on a cool night. The Bell Tent was also stacked with a power bank and Apple home pod which kept us entertained. Overall, we would highly recommend!

We had the absolute best time!! I went with my partner for a night as a getaway from busy Sydney and this hipcamp exceeded our expectations. Ian is so hospitable, so much so that he even gave us a backpack and a lunchbox to go hiking with. He was constantly going out of his way to ensure we had the best possible experience. Nestled right up against the escarpment at an elevation of 450m, this high-end, off-grid 40 acre property effectively offers your own private slice of Macquarie Pass National Park - amazing views, giant cedar trees, fern forests, cascading waterfalls and palms surround. It feels remote but it's only 90 min from Sydney, 30 min to Kiama and just 15 min to the shops. The property also offers the only hiking path up to the top of the escarpment for some truly amazing views. As of September 2024, all the trails on the property have been massively upgraded and are passable with a 2WD car. If you're towing or it's wet we still recommend AWD or 4WD vehicles. We've just (mid December) added a spa half way up the driveway. It can be booked through the extras. We're not particularly price sensitive - until all those rate rises - but we are extremely value sensitive so we set out to make your stay extremely good value for your hard earned money. The land itself does most of the heavy lifting but also personal service and of course there's Lana to fall in love with. Note, Mellows Rd is 2.6km long and rises 400m - in parts the road is a 15 degree grade. It's all paved but narrow so if you are towing a large heavy load, it's going to strain your car.

We are 1.5 hrs from Sydney. On arrival you will feel the atmosphere of this wilderness area. Colo River Hut is located adjacent to the Colo River. A beautiful, unspoiled location on a pristine river. With it's own private beach and over 400 metres of riverfront. We are on the opposite side of river from the the Wollemi National Park. The hut sits (alone) within the eastern (10 acre paddock) of our property. There are no walls and so you have permanent views across the paddock to large sandstone cliffs and we are less than 30 metres from the riverbank. The Hut has a rustic tin roof, a large bench area with power points and task lighting. Tents or swags can be set up within the Colo River Hut. Or, if you wish, you can set up your tent or camper or small caravan adjacent to the Hut. There is plenty of room as there is a maximum of 6 guests (and 3 vehicles) with each booking. The Hut has a raised hardwood timber floor and enclosed composting toilet and hot/cold shower facilities. It also has ceiling fans for airflow and insect control. We provide a gorgeous shaded area under a large tree with valley views, with a large bbq table and chairs and fire pit (with grill) for your enjoyment. Firewood is also provided. Suitable for swimming, canoes, bikes, Bass fishing, and hiking, the Colo River Hut can be as active or relaxing as you wish. The Colo River Valley remains largely undiscovered, and is on the edge of the Wollemi wilderness. The Colo is fed by the Wolgan and Capertee Rivers. It has a long history and retains much of its' early unspoiled charm.
