Set at the base of the mountains on a beautiful valley floor, located in wine country in the lower Hunter Valley, Cranky Rock gets its name from a 25 tonne sandstone rock that graces our home.
The 120 acre working beef and horse farm
is situated a scenic 2 hour drive North from Sydney or 1 hour East from
Newcastle.
Whether you chose to stay of one of our campsites or in our pioneer-style cottage, all visitor being awoken to the natural bush sounds of lyre birds and cooling their heels in the crystal creek at the bottom of the property.
On your way in or out, be sure to check out the boutique village of Wollombi which is just 10 minutes from Cranky Rock, where you'll enjoy wine tasting, fresh produce and quaint cafes. Other must-see's in the area include the Olney State Forest and the Wattagan National Park.
The property is located just off a scenic drive, over a 2wd accessible creek crossing. It
is peaceful and secluded. Campers can use a bush shower if needed but it’s reliant on rain water in the tank. Dogs are welcome, but as it's a working farm, we ask the remain on leash at all times.

Our property is private so we ask you to contact us first to ensure we can provide the facilities most suited to you. It suits off-road independent hybrid caravaners and tent dwellers. The river is home to mangroves (so mosquitoes feed the leaping fish), all manner of sea creatures and dolphins are frequent in drier periods.
Birdlife includes an array of land and waterbirds, such as Eagles, Magpies, Kookaburras, colourful parrots and smaller shyer birds. The wildlife includes kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, reptiles. You may espy a Koala along the foreshore. For this reason, while we accept dogs, they must be on a leash (if not just for their own safety).
The boat ramp has good access for kayaks/canoes. Or just sit on a camper chair and dangle your feet in the water while watching the mud crabs go about their social business.
Riverside sites are not powered and do not have water or sewerage. They are situated within 10m to 25m of each other and if this is too close, we recommend booking two sites. Generally, we prefer campers to be 100% self-contained, with their own toilet. A toilet is however accessible, but some 300m to 400m distance from the dams and rivers. There is cold potable running water here for topping up.
Sealed roads to the front gate to access the property from north and south. All-weather gravel road access is available, although paddock sites can only be accessed by vehicle during dry periods. Weather willing, we can provide more secluded sites by some lovely dams, (please check conditions if you have concerns).

Weekend Trip to Cranky Rock Hunter Valley
Such a beautiful experience! We loved our stay here at Cranky Rock. The cabin is so unique with so many cool details, the more you look the more you find. The property is also incredible! We stayed with our dog who loved the horses and we also spotted multiple deer which I’ve never seen before so was thrilled about that. The hosts Pam and Lindsey were so welcoming and lovely, made us feel so at home. The best part, it’s dog friendly so you can bring your fur babies! We had such a great time here and thank you so much for having us 🩷

Absolutely incredible location. Everything about the tree house was made with comfort and pure relaxation. The kangaroos that visit you are so sweet and was the possum. Lizards and birds, just beautiful. Heather, you have made that Treehouse a home for any to come, right down to the cutlery and beautiful bedding. Matt and Jenna are super friendly and helpful.
The land was beautiful and we loved that we could explore some bush tracks on the property. The amenities were nice and clean and they even have a family friendly shower room which was really helpful! We will definitely be back.

Dael’s Mill is a gorgeous old cottage packed with charm and character. We loved the place, the fire pit, the hot tub, the birds, the wallaby’s, the dam, the jetty, all of which surrounded by horses and natural beauty! Thanks Chantelle and Tyson for enabling us to share your place for a short while!

1 night at Carawirry Forest Escape
Loved it! The treehouse was so cosy and peaceful, it was beautiful to be surrounded by bushland and wildlife. The cabin was well equipped with what need and the bed was super comfy!
Make sure to take a long soak in the outdoor bath, this was my favourite part of the stay and so relaxing!

Weekend Trip to Wattle Valley Farm
Thank you Mat and Jenna for having us !! When we arrived Mat was so welcoming and showed us where everything was, the property is so big and beautiful plenty of space for everyone to pick there camping spot.
The bathrooms and showers were well maintained and very clean. This place is nice for families and couples.
If your someone who wants to sleep on a bed the cabins are perfect as you can sit outside all night in front of the bon fire then go inside to your cabin to sleep!!
Wifi wasnt to bad !! but if you need to make calls to fam and friends you can just walk up closer to the main house :)
I would def come back here again ❤️
There is also a small spot in the town 7 mins away with 2 cafes me and my partner drove up there and spent 4 hours exploring everything there all in the same street the wine tasting, art gallery, cafe, museum, 2x thrif stores was really nice !!!

The house was fantastic! The pictures really don't do it justice! We had the fire place going all night to keep us lovely and warm. Our host Debora was lovely and so accommodating. The site had everything you could ever ask for, lovely views, a couple of good fishing spots and magic scenery. 10/10 would rent again!

Plenty of camping space.
Facilities were excellent.
Cabins were very clean and cosy.
Close to Wollombi if you require a coffee fix.
Would have been great if we were able to access the creek .
Overall a fantastic place for camping with friends and family.

We had such a lovely stay over the long weekend, the views and surroundings were so lovely and peaceful! The place was perfect to relax with friends and enjoy some wildlife. Debora was a lovely attentive host who made us feel at home. Would strongly recommend this place, we will be returning!

3 nights at Carawirry Forest Escape
The cottage was a stunning place to spend the weekend even though it rained so we didn’t get to explore as much of the bush as we would have liked. Loved the maps which greeted us with so many surprising options to explore. We walked lyrebird and yowie tracks which were challenging but very rewarding. No lyrebird sightings this time round but definitely worth the climb up the side of the mountain. Had a lovely time chilling with the walleroos in the outdoor tub after that one!

We loved our stay at cranky rock and are return guests. The hosts have poured so much love into creating a space that is full of character and comfortable for their guests. My husband, myself and our dog Millie were well looked after and loved that the hosts also went the extra mile to make sure we had a enjoyable stay we loved that the extra breakfast items they included of fresh eggs etc. Thank you once again for opening cranky rock up for us to stay on our journey back to Sydney.

Loved our time at the little cottage! The place was very clean when we arrived and all the instructions were very clear on how to get there and let ourselves in.
We really enjoyed walking down to the river and sitting on the deck with a nice breeze.

6 nights at Cranky Rock Hunter Valley
Cranky Rock Cottage was a delightful find! Nestled amidst stunning scenery, the cottage itself is beautifully appointed with a cozy and rustic charm. We particularly enjoyed the farm, views and hot tub. The location was perfect for exploring nearby historic towns and wineries.
Pam & Lindsay are excellent hosts, kind and helpful.
Overall, we had a wonderful stay and would highly recommend Cranky Rock Cottage for a peaceful and memorable getaway.

2 nights at Cranky Rock Hunter Valley
Lindsay and Pam have created a unique cottage set among the fields and mountains near Wollumbi. Lindsay has used his particular knowledge of historic building techniques to create a space that takes you back to the mid nineteenth century, with pull cord electric lights and hewn logs throughout. One of the highlights for me was the abundant bird life. The native vegetation planted around the cottage brings past a host of scarlet browed finches, wrens and black cockatoos. Well worth slowing down with a cup of coffee on the veranda.
