1948- On January 1, 1948 a wildcatter named George Hadley, who had been oil prospecting in the valley for 10 years, made the first oil strike in the Cuyama Valley. Richfield Oil Company soon moved in and extracted nearly 300 million barrels of oil in just a few short years. To accommodate an exploding workforce in the early 1950s, the company built the town of New Cuyama, its infrastructure, public buildings, the Cuyama airstrip (L88) and all the industrial structures that are now home to Blue Sky. Richfield Oil Company, later merging with Atlantic Oil Company forming the Atlantic Richfield Oil Company (ARCO), created high-paying jobs, a safe and prosperous community, and developed schools, churches, and recreational areas for the employee-residents. 1973- With dwindling production in the area and new discoveries in Alaska, Atlantic-Richfield Oil Company put the town of New Cuyama and its associated infrastructure up for sale. Word of an entire town for sale made its way to entrepreneur, Russell O’Quinn of the Foundation for Airborne Relief (FAR) and Mildred Dotson, a wealthy widow from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The two worked together to acquire the townsite and adjacent land. O’Quinn, an aviator, inventor, and test pilot, aspired to use the New Cuyama airstrip and facilities as a base for humanitarian relief and a non-profit trade school. Though not fully realized, FAR’s primary vision included utilizing converted military aircraft to airlift food and medical supplies to developing countries and global disaster areas. Dotson had loftier goals. Her plans included an 18-hole fly-in golf course, expansion of the Buckhorn Restaurant and Motel, and a 40- to 50-acre lake for amphibious landing and water sports. 1986- Another visionary, Harry Kislevitz, inventor of the popular design tool Colorforms® and founder of Future City/Villages International, sought to develop the site as a “City of Friendship,” an all-electric village of 5,000 earthen homes. The dwellings were to be designed by Nader Khalili, an Iranian-born architect who specialized in earthen structures, worked with NASA on prototypes for lunar homes and received an award from the United Nations for his work towards the development of low cost, sustainable structures for human shelter in impoverished and disaster prone environments. One 628-sq-ft Khalili prototype remains on the property today ("the Cantina"). Khalili went on to form the California Institute for Earth Art and Architecture, Cal-Earth, in Hesperia, CA. 1993- Recognizing the transformative potential of clean, solar power and the attractiveness of a rural destination, entrepreneur Mike Nolan worked to develop the Solar Skypark and Big Sky Guest Ranch with Santa Barbara Architect, Barry Berkus. The Sky Park included plans for sixty-five fly-in residences on one-acre lots powered completely from clean, solar energy. The Big Sky Guest Ranch was intended to function as a clubhouse for Skypark residents complete with an equestrian center, a small subsistence farm, pool and plenty of enriching recreational activities. 2012- At the end of 2011, the Zannon Family Foundation made a long-term investment in acquiring the New Cuyama Airport property with the vision of rehabilitating the site to be a low-cost resource for programs and organizations working to advance sustainable living practices and technologies. Plans began soon after towards developing a framework and organization to develop the space and coordinate with prospective programs and institutions. In 2014 Blue Sky Sustainable Living Center ("Blue Sky Center") received 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status, endeavoring to reclaim this property for the public good. Today, Blue Sky Center provides unduplicated services and technical assistance to support small businesses and entrepreneurs as well as the local food system, with core work focused on community research and advocacy led by Cuyamans. We welcome dry campers of all kinds here at Blue Sky Center. Whether you're in a Westy, an RV, or you're a car, motorcycle, bicycle, or tent camper, you and your adventuremobile are welcome here. The per site fee (up to 2 tents/4 people per site) entitles you to access to all of our camper amenities including clean restrooms and shower. You're welcome to relax the Khalili Cantina, socialize and cook over the fire at the main fire pit, or stretch out in one of our hammocks. Our Dispersed Camping area is set up for you! Sand covers the ground with 8 raised tent platforms made of wood, complete with tie down anchors.  We have firewood for purchase here - $5/bundle (deposit into the wood box or send via PayPal/Venmo to @blueskycenter). There are multiple fire rings, so feel free to share with other guests or build your own. We have picnic benches for eating. A large BBQ grill is available for cooking. Due to the high desert environment, we don't allow ground fires but you're welcome to bring your own fire pit or grill. We do not have hookups for RVs, so your vehicle must be self contained. If you intend to run a generator, we'll set you up in a spot where you'll have plenty of room and won't disturb the rest of camp. Blue Sky Dispersed Camping
I enjoyed the Blue sky dispersed camping experience. It's a huge plus to have a hot shower and a working bathroom. A flush toilet. I was in a 30-ft Class A gas so I had both but if you know anything about RVs especially entry level like mine, the less you use the longer it lasts. Plus showers and RVs suck as do the toilets. So having that open 24/7, 7 days a week was a huge bonus. I went to New Cuyama during a new moon so no moon at night at all and was really hopeful I would be able to see spectacular stars and even the Milky Way galaxy cloud. However, I was quite disappointed. About a month previous to this, I stayed in Barringer Canyon at SongdognRanch, about 15 minutes down the road and rhe light show was wayyy netter. New kuyama is small, about 500 people that live their permanently, but they're still enough light pollution that it just didn't live up to my expectations. But, that's not Blue Sky's fault. However, if that's what you're going there for, there are better options. On the other hand, habing a market, a bar and restaurant walking distance, big deal, nice perk. The Price is Right. You'll probably have it all to yourself like I did. And the shower, bathroom and shopping options were a big bonus. The price is also right. Can't beat 20 or 25 bucks a night or whatever it was and have those perks in a dispersed camping situation. If you just want to get away, it's a good spot and a good option.

Laid back, easy, affordable for what we needed. We had a rig so just pulled in for the night and can’t speak for the facilities. But I did take a stroll around for photos. There were people in the wagons and 1 group actually camping and enjoying the firepit. The stars were lovely but here was a super bright light on the warehouse in the lot that distracted from the view. While there is a communal kitchen, if another group gets there first, you may not be able to use it when wanted so bring your own stove just in case and cook under the sun or stars. There is an indoor shower and outdoor shower. Only found bathrooms in the center which could be a bit of a walk for campers.

Snail Hut
Each house was so cute and the beds were comfortable but the surrounding area was far from relaxing. Loud neighbors and dogs barking all night, parking lot is right next to the houses so headlights when people drive in shine right into your house. It was cute though and the coffee shop/restaurant in the nearby hotel was delicious!

Nice setting but only one shower was inadequate for the number of people who wanted to use it. There was no hot water and virtually zero ventilation in the shower room with the walls, floors and ceiling dripping wet.

The only thing I would criticize about this campsite for the directions found on Apple Maps directed us to the direct opposite side of the little town and we ended up driving into someone’s backyard, luckily though they provided some instructions on where to go, and we were able to figure it out in the dark, but if possible, please update whether it is everything else was perfect! We loved it

I made a reservation late in the evening so I had to drive on a two way road (from Hwy 5) in the dark for about 60 miles, arriving at 9:30pm. A regretful thoughts kept coming up in my head “Why did I do this? Just because it was a few dollars cheaper?” When I got up in the morning, however, that regret completely vanished. It was a beautiful campground with all of the modern amenities such as toilet, shower, and even fully equipped cantina (kitchen) where I ended up cooking and eating while I enjoyed the cool breeze and beautiful mountain views in the distance. I had short conversations with some guests who stayed in the huts. Everyone seemed to have liked the experience. They were quite casual about checkin/checkout. I don’t know what time is the checkout but I think I left at 2pm. Thoroughly enjoyed it and I’ll definitely come back (next time for a longer stay.)

The dispersed camping at Blue Sky was nice. Lots of space to spread out and access to restrooms and showers was incredibly helpful. The facilities were clean and accessible all night. Take seriously their warning about neighborhood noise though; there were pretty frequent barking dogs not far away so earplugs are essential!

Perfect get away from LA

I had another great stay at Blue Sky, this was my first time in one of the huts. They are super cozy, it got down to the high 30s low 40s overnight, but I stayed nice and warm thanks to the heated blanket & heater. I had a delicious dinner at the Buckhorn, then back to the hut to relax. The sky was so dark at night, you could see so many stars!! I drove through Carrizo Plains on the way in and saw Soda Lake and lots of flowers. I drove through Los Padres on the way home and spotted a condor, just a few minutes past the Bitter Creek National Refuge sign. What a trip.

Gable Hut
I had a great experience at Blue Sky. The Gable Hut was perfect. It had a table and a stool with a full size elevated bed. The bedding was nice and the mattress was heated. There were extra blankets too. The kitchen had everything you would need to cook and the shared fridge was cold. There was firewood to use and at least 3 fire pits available. There was also a great Santa Maria grill out back of the kitchen. There was a nice long communal table in the kitchen and a small “lounge” area to get in out of the elements if you needed to. The area had some horses to check out. I met a nice guy who’d rented out a space in the airport buildings that refurbished old woody cars for a living- fascinating. I would come back here- the area is beautiful!

Blue Sky was the perfect camp site for me. It was a little cold out at the end of December, but as long as you’re prepared, the weather is not too much of a problem. I arrived with no trouble, and the instructions were very helpful for finding my campsite, even in the dark. The tent platforms are sturdy. The showers run hot, and the communal areas were clean and comfortable. The communal cantina area was well stocked for cooking, and there are even fridges available. This is a really great stop for a road trip, or a few days stay. Host was responsive and proactive, providing activity guides and an informative welcome message. I was not personally bothered by the dogs barking. Altogether a great trip, thank you Blue Sky!

Nice space to stay with basic amenities while visiting. The Center is an inspiring rural community improvement project supporting many local initiatives. Worth looking over the website and some print materials available on site to learn more. The tent campground is a bit sparse and exposed, come prepared if weather or wind is expected. Grounds are nice to walk with some shaded seating. Hope to return and see what else takes root in a few years!

Aside from staff, I had the whole campsite to myself on a Monday. Because of this, I wanted to park near the trees and behind the huts, since they were empty and would provide a lovely view in the morning. The host was responsive and I was able to enjoy a peaceful stay. The shower was warm and cooking in the communal kitchen was lovely. I really enjoyed seeing the trees through the arched and portal windows. Next time I am definitely bringing a group of friends!

We couldn’t find a working charger for our electric car, so had to leave early. There was hardly anyone there. No one responded to our text when we had a question, and no one has yet written back about processing a refund for the nights we weren’t there.

One can exercise lots of freedom at this place, and they are definitely not money-minded. They don't count the pennies. What's the use of counting them anyway? They have been discontinued! But the accommodation is overpriced. Construction of huts is flimsy and unprofessional. Corners have been cut. Also, if you have a question, there's no one on the property to answer. It runs in good faith and mutual trust. I like that.

The campsite was very nice! Although I didn’t stay in the huts I loved it! We book a tent site and got there late. It was dark but we were able to set up our tent. The owner was very responsive and had really great hospitality. I can’t believe we were able to get so many accommodations. They had a fridge, coffee, laundry machine and more. Would come back again!

as a solo camper i was able to have the place to myself, which was very relaxing once settled into camp. The Cantina was perfect for quick dinner prep so I left all my cooking and kitchen gear packed up. I enjoyed a beautiful sunset and had a very comfortable nights rest. I think Blue Sky camp would be fun for a large group of friends.

What a treat! We were so impressed with the facilities (that we even had access to running water & toilets, but also refrigerator & electricity?!?)- staying here was far beyond our expectations! We met neighbors in the cute cafe nearby & leaving the visitors center after craft night. Do know, this location is more like an empty lot behind a neighborhood. That means people’s dogs left out all night were barking nonstop, there was traffic & residential noise just beside the camping grounds. The dogs barking were particularly distressing, as they’re clearly neglected & unhappy.

It was my first time solo camping as a female. I really enjoyed the main building — The hot showers were great and the rooms were warm in the evenings, there was a microwave, and the WiFi was good. Other than one other person tent camping, there was nobody on site Saturday night/Sunday morning, so it felt a bit too remote and isolated for me personally but it might be perfect if you’re looking for privacy. Heads up, the neighborhood dogs do bark a lot at night.

Definitely appreciate the clean bathroom, hot shower, and well-equipped kitchen cantina. This was my second time camping here and I will be back. Fun waking up to small prop planes landing and taking off on the runway right next to the camp :-)

9/10! Couldn’t really ask for more. Loved the facilities overall. I think the only things I would improve are to add some rope hanging off the hooks on the tent loops on the platforms in case someone needs to tie their tent / wind cover down but forgot rope (so bring your own for now I guess.) The outdoor shower was only cool to room temp for me but maybe it isn’t normally? And I think the small appliances could use a deep clean or just simple replacement, since most of them cost $10-20. Anyway, just nitpicking, was a very full featured camping experience!

This place was definitely an adventure—with an artsy soul and a sun that does not mess around. By midday, our tent and wagon turned into full-blown saunas, and our car became a tragic little oven (RIP to the candles and gummies—we hardly knew you). Hammock dreams? Dashed. All of them were out of commission during our stay, so if you’re the lounging type, bring your own gear—and maybe a pop-up shade palace while you’re at it. Nights were cooler, and the vibe totally shifted. Stargazing was lovely until the moon decided to steal the show. It’s shockingly bright—like someone left a giant porch light on in the sky. Not much going on nearby, but we stumbled into a low-key spot that served a surprisingly solid BBQ plate. Not naming names—you’ll have to earn that one. In short: not the cushiest experience, but if you don’t mind a bit of sweat and silliness, this place might just charm you in its own weird little way.
