What an incredible spot! Pittsfield Vermont may have one of the best mountain biking secrets on the east coast. In the hills above town there lies a network of trails and surprises just waiting to be discovered. We stopped at the country store to stock up on some last minute items before heading for the stone cabin in woods. From the village, we took RT-100 south and turned on to Tweed River Drive. After climbing almost 500 vertical feet we arrived at the upper parking area for the Green Mountain Trails. From here we set off to make the short trip up Round Yonder trail to the summit. You can also take the green trail which provides a simple and flowy route to the top of the mountain, as well as a more controlled descent for those bikers who are not quite ready to tackle Bubba’s Trail. At the peak you will be greeted by panoramic views of the green mountains, along with a most welcoming site; Shrek’s Hut. Inside, there is room for a few adults to sleep comfortably and lots of amenities. On the outside, there is room for whatever your mind can envision. Beautiful sunsets, wild animals, stories around the fire pit and visits from other riders are just a few of the things to expect during your time on South Hill. If your stay permits, seek out some of the local myths and legends that may or may not dot the hillside. Muddy’s Kitchen, Spartan Race artifacts and the infamous ravine trail are all worth a visit… if you can find them! We will definitely be making a trip back to this magical site.

Very rustic but comfortable accommodation. Requires some know how of the outdoors, etc. sleeping gear. Fantastic atmosphere, Superb views, epicenter of mountain biking. A few visitors during the day as the hut is on a hike/bike trail. Serene at night. Short hike from parking lot. Host is fantastic.

Awesome fall colors. So cool to wake up above the clouds. Unique spot. Totally recommend. Stayed with small children and loved it, but lucky it did not rain
Great location, easily accessible, amazing views
My fiancé and I spent the night at the mountain top cabin and had an amazing time. The property is so unique and the view cannot be beat. Sunset, moonrise, and sunrise were all viewable from the mountain top. We hiked up the shorter “Round Yonder” trail up to the top. It took about 15 mins with a few stops to take photos. It’s definitely steep but gorgeous. We made dinner and ate in front of the outdoor fireplace. We slept on a queen size air mattress as the bunks are twins. Matthew was a great host, bringing us ample firewood and fresh water at the beginning of our stay. We will definitely be back for the summer season
This property is not completely secluded and private. We arrived almost simultaneously as a large, loud, group of hikers arrived. They climbed on the roof, drank beers, and did not leave for almost an hour, despite our telling them that we rented the space for the weekend. It wasn’t that big of a deal, But it should be known that if you rent this property, you are situated directly on a publicly traversed biking/hiking trails. Some more introverted private people may care more than others.
Overall, this mountain top cabin cannot be beat due to its total unique construction and views. and the host is very helpful.

What a view! Beautiful, old school trails and cozy cabin make for a wonderful getaway.
Great views-
Nice hike to get there-
Basically isolated after dark- but during the day, cool people just appear out of nowhere on foot, or riding bikes.
It is ENTIRELY possible to over heat the cabin. Go easy on the wood in there.
Shreks cabin is everything in the description and more. The location provides incredible views in all directions and a feeling of remoteness that’s hard to beat. The hike in from the parking lot is about a mile, mostly up hill, but only takes about 20 minutes at a relaxed pace. The cabin itself is well stocked with essentials and intelligently laid out for its size. On top of that it’s extremely weather tight with no noticeable drafts or wind howls. Matt was a great host, who was easy to communicate with and has a palpable love for this place. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for an awesome place to hike/bike and stay in an off the grid cabin
Such an amazing stay! Beautiful views, very well secluded, and it was wonderfully maintained. Totally recommend to anyone who enjoys a rustic mountain getaway!
