Fern Gully Camp

Erin and her crew were very responsive, inviting and super friendly. The property is beautiful and in a great location, central to many fun spots on Whidbey. Site #6 is the least private, but that wasn't a big issue. There was a crazy infestation of black slugs the first night, but after that they seemed to stay in the forest. They were cute, we just didn't wanna step on them. I was under the impression that the toilets would be compost, rather than a single port-a-john for multiple sites, which is just not super pleasant to share with most of the campers. There were kids and teens using the single bathroom for long periods of time, which made snagging a shower, or even washing your hands post-toilet strategic. The shower was definitely not hot and pretty uncomfortable the two times I used it, but our friend reported that the water WAS warm in the daytime, so day showers are likely the way to go. We loved that dogs were allowed to roam off leash throughout their property, that was a HUGE plus. This isn't really about the property itself because there are no fireworks allowed on site, but we were kind of hoping that the fireworks for July 4 on the island as a whole would be a little subdued compared to the mainland. We couldn't have been more wrong. The neighbors went nuts with the fireworks until nearly 2am. On the whole, it was a pleasant stay, but improvements to the toilet and shower situations would make it really awesome.

Site 3 - Fern Gully

My wife and I loved site 3. It is very secluded and only a short walk from where you leave your car. There is a great hammock to relax in as well as a standing fireplace to have a campfire. We found a good spot for our tent and enjoyed being back at the site. My only recommendation would be to make sure to store your trash securely! My wife and I had a trash bag hung up off the ground and either some critters or the nearby camper’s roaming dog got into it. Obviously we learned to store it securely but make sure you do that in advance. Otherwise, it was a great experience. The property was beautiful and extremely easy to find with the signage. The host, Erin, was prompt in responses and made sure to check in on us to make sure everything was going smoothly. This is a great spot to explore Whidbey Island as well because it is right in the middle of island. It makes it very easy to explore the North and South! Also, make sure to checkout the Greenbank Pantry nearby! Incredible sandwiches

Erin was extremely responsive when we had questions or concerns. The site itself was well-maintained and in a lovely wooded setting. The hipcamp is located near many points of interest on Whidbey Island which was very convenient. Overall, it was a bit less private than we were hoping for but a great place to stay on Whidbey.

Site #1 was secluded and a great spot for camping! Was a nice surprise to have a big table and chairs already at the site, along with a great fire pit! The hammock circle was lovely and the porta potty was super clean. Would definitely recommend and stay again :) Thanks Erin for a wonderful stay!

A great spot to camp

Campsite #4 was fantastic! It was nicely shaded with easy access to a beautiful sunny meadow nearby. Surrounded by trees, it felt very secluded and peaceful, with birds singing throughout the day and incredible star views at night. The hosts were awesome—friendly, caring, and made us feel very welcome. The drive in was easy, even with my little Honda Fit pulling a small trailer. There were some mosquitoes, but that’s part of camping and wasn’t a big deal since we always bring a few mosquito deterrents with us. We’ll definitely be back to spend more time here. Highly recommended!

Site 6 was perfect for our trip! The hosts were super friendly and accommodating, bringing us extra chairs, a grill, and other niceties. This is a beautiful spot to relax and take in all the birds. We saw red-tailed hawks, spotted towheys, ravens brown headed cowbird, hummingbirds and many more. We camped in a nice open area, near the bath house and hammocks. Main beaches and hiking trails are within 30 minutes drive. The only thing, and this does not reflect on our hosts at all, is that someone who stayed just before us at site 6 really disrespected the property, dumping glassy ashes at the treeline and damaging natural growth. Six or more saplings were hacked at, by morning of the first night three had fallen. That is so not ok! Respect the space! We will definitely return for a future camping trip.

erin is extraordinary, and i’ll remember fern gully forever. the private tranquility of birdsong, hammock rocking, twinkly lights, beach sandwiches, and stargazing through green forest was exactly what we needed along with hot showers. erin went above and beyond ensuring everything from start to finish was the most comfortable and sweet experience, sharing helpful ideas, resources, and taking incredible care to set things up for birthday surprise plans i’d worked hard on! thank you very much for all of your communication, serene shelter, and genuine support. *the island love + magic was truly felt*

Site 5 - Fern Gully

Site is back in the woods with plenty of space for a group. Really nice setting and well located on the island close to the Greenbank Deli and Kitchen and not far from Freeland. Handyhouse was super clean and there was lots of water. Great place to stay!

Birds Singing and a Breeze Blowing

We camped for 4 nights in site #1 and let me tell you it was huge, very private and peaceful. The birds always chirping. Sun in the morning and Shad when it’s hot out. The Hammock circle is not to be missed. We went down for our afternoon nap every day. The shower room was spacious and private, the port a potty very clean and the location is just perfect for expiring South Whidbey. We rode our bikes from Fern Gully to Meerkirk Garden, to Greenbank farm and the over to Bush Point to explore the tide pools. Erin gives a great description of Fern Gully and it’s everything and better when you get there.

Quiet and peaceful

Do you like birds? You will love this site! Do you not like birds? Weirdo! But you'll still love this site! Private, quiet, clean, green, lovely. We had a great time and our two little dogs loved it to. The birds serenaded us from the break of dawn until after dark, it was so relaxing. Will definitely be back.

We had a lovely time at Fern Gully. Our host was incredibly welcoming. The site was open and clean and there was a lot to explore (trails, berries as well as space for the kids to fly kites). We hope to be back someday!

This place is beautiful and run by beautiful souls!! Would totally recommend, especially for a group setting. There are more private sites with larger fields and access to parking as well! Will definitely be coming back:)

The spot was beautiful and super private we were the only ones this weekend and the hosts are so incredibly kind and gracious. They left hammocks for us were accommodating about the bathroom and wood since it got cold since its still early in the season. The instructions made it super easy to get to the site and its not a long or bad walk to the bathroom and everything. I would agree that if you go on the grass road just go slow and be careful but they laid rocks for us as well to make it easier. If youre thinking about booking this place this is your sign to go ahead and book it!! Me and my friends will be coming back and I will be recommending this spot to people for the summer when wanting to sight see in whidbey! Its not too far from oak harbor or the ferry to get back to main land and seattle.

Our stay was really peaceful. The hosts were fantastic, everything was simple and straightforward The one thing we appreciated is how quiet the space was, the privacy., and it was so nice for my dog to be able to be off leash and happy along with us. The photos online were very generous. The property has huge potential.

Fun at Fern Gully!

This location and setting was perfect for our party of 6. Charming location with plenty of character. Our site was great as we were tucked away from others and could have our car next to us. We plan on coming back!
