Rogue Trout Retreat is a brand new recreation destination, offering ~5 open acres of primitive camping and 700+ feet of private trout fishing that connects to the Crooked Creek Fee Fishing park and Wildlife Reserve. The creek is stocked with Rainbow Trout multiple times throughout the week between the months of April and October. Native and Brown Trout are also very commonly found in these waters. The Wildlife Reserve "next door" offers opportunities for 5 miles of stocked trout fishing, 2 miles of wild trout fishing, 1800+ acres of hunting, hiking, horseback riding and wildlife watching. Nearby you'll find all you need in the way of food, supplies, gas, entertainment, sights, and more in the city of Galax, or town of Hillsville. Don't forget to enjoy the Blue Ridge Parkway, kayak the New River, bike the New River Trail, pick at the Fiddler's Convention, shop multiple boutiques, antique stores, flea and farmer's markets, and visit plenty more small town events that are sure to bring you back to visit Rogue Trout Retreat very soon!

Come Catch a Rogue! Rogue Trout Retreat is a brand new, private, primitive (for now) fishing/camping destination located in Woodlawn, Virginia just over the line of the Virginia State Maintained Fee Fishing Area and Wildlife Reserve along the famous trout waters of Crooked Creek. Rogue Trout Retreat offers ~5 acres of semi-flat, wide open, primitive camping and fishing along 700 feet of the stocked, native and allusive brown trout fishing waters of Crooked Creek. There are many shaded fishing areas along the banks, a private island that sits in the middle of the creek, deeper holes to find the real "rogues", and a tiny branch that could be hiding a few as well! Pitch a tent, or park anywhere you'd like within boundaries - but be mindful of our wildlife and of your fellow rogue-seekers! Hunting, horseback riding, wildlife watching, hiking and more fishing are available right across the property lines, within walking distance from your campsite! (proper licenses are required, and absolutely no hunting of any kind is allowed on RTR grounds) --- Note: we are in the process of installing a fence, fire pits and grills - as well as more accommodating amenities such as a bath house and extended stay accommodations. Fishing is included - 6 each/7in limit per law - fishing license required, no trout stamp required. Private stocking is available. Guest stocking is also available with an approved hatchery form required by DWR. In the coming year, we hope to add many more amenities and conveniences for your special gathering. When Rogue Trout Retreat is not at capacity, we are open for "day fishing". Rainbows, brookies & browns call us home. Come try and catch a rogue between the hours of 8am and 6pm. Day fishing does not include camping. Price is per 2 anglers. Fishing license required. Trout stamp not required. 6 fish max, 7 in minimum - per state.

Great spot for car camping or tent camping, for my fellow anglers the river has plenty of tiger trout which is a rare catch! Highly recommend

Another great trip here! I was able to paddle around on the water a little bit and my husband caught a 13" and two 14" trout in 45 minutes! This is a safe place to stay and we like that it's got (Verizon) cell service, too! The openness of the field is beautiful. It makes you feel a real sense of community all camping together while also being able to spread out. We've been able to meet some GREAT fellow campers here! We'll return 10/10 😊

Our little family had the absolute best time at Rogue Trout Retreat! We loved the space, the peacefulness and of course the fishing. Others noted the nearby roadway traffic but honestly it didn't bother us at all. The accessibility of the stream was easy and convenient for our 5 year old to fish, although he didn't catch anything, Mommy caught 5 lol. The space of the area was perfect for our son to run around without bothering anyone. We will definitely be back to this campground!

This place was amazing!!! Lots of land for my doggy to run and play, and right on the creek. Had a nice clean porta potty, perfect for those tent camping. I will for sure be back in the spring with a group of friends. I caught 38 trout!!! So so much fun

Amazing campsite. Do not get discouraged by other reviews that it’s too close to the road, traffic during the day. It’s very low. During the evening time, maybe only one or two car will pass by. At night we didn’t hear any cars at all. We caught a bunch of rainbow trout, about 12 pounds total. Definitely coming back

Great location and a beautiful spot right on the creek. There were other campers there so for me it got a little crowded. They played music until 1 AM. I would love to go back but I will definitely move a little further down for sure.

Beautiful spot on the river! We rented both sites to accommodate ourselves and two other families comfortably. Great choice and would do that again. Two families are experienced campers and it was the first time for one family. Everyone loved it. The river provided lots of entertainment with fishing, tubing and just wandering around to look at rocks and cool off. The dogs enjoyed the water too and running in the field. Porta potty was clean, easy to access but still out of the way. The road many comments mention is close by, but it wasn’t bad at all. Most of the time we forgot about it, until someone would honk to say hello. We went for the 4th of July, only heard minimal fireworks way in the distance, which was nice. We caught trout, saw several other animals right at camp including deer, bald eagles, crawfish, and a massive amount of fireflies! We spotted a decent sized bear about half a mile down the road when we drove to Galax one day, but we never saw him at camp. Very peaceful spot. We all enjoyed it and would love to book it again in the future!

Fantastic site! Freshly mowed for our arrival. Porta potty was freshly serviced and clean. Stream had trout and was wonderful to sit in and listen to nature. Will 100% return.

Everything was great at Rouge Trout. Water was perfect, field was freshly mowed. Toilet was spotless. There is some traffic noise but it’s really not that bad if you position yourself correctly. I will definitely be coming back.

Great: Beautiful property and surrounding area. Property was clean and well-maintained. Nice private stretch of river to fish. In fact, I caught my personal best not too far from the camp spot. Not great: The property is right off a very busy road. Frequent passing cars and large trucks starting as early as 5am and as late as midnight. Attn hammock campers: There are only a few trees close enough together for a hammock. If you’re solo, you’ll be fine. But if you’re hammock camping as a group it will be difficult to stay together.

The grass was too tall. It is exposed to the public and does not speak to the name retreat. There were a pair of boxer briefs by the portable potty.

We enjoyed our stay at Rogue Trout. They had plenty of space to throw football and the sound of the river soothed us to sleep. Excited to get back when the river is stocked with trout!

Rouge Trout camp was the perfect location for our annual fishing trip. The owners were super easy to communicate with and very helpful. We had a group of 12 and prefer and campground not near all the lights and generators of a public campgrounds. We caught a good number of trout right from the property. Well most definitely be back.

Enjoyed my stay at Rogue Trout. Although it was only for one night it was still a great trip. Campsite was on the water and liked I could hear the water. I’m new to fly fishing but was a great spot to fish. Nice flat land and was easy set up. Liked they had a clean port-a-potty on site. Will definitely visit again.

Easy to find and close to stores and food. People would sometimes honk and wave when they drove past the site, which was really sweet! Easy access to the water and we kayaked up and down the creek several times. My husband had a blast fishing on the site. Porta potty was clean as well. Not a ton of shade but wasn't a problem for us, we loved it. Field was beautiful and had a lot of room to spread out. Communication with the host was great

This was the perfect camping spot for us. My partner is obsessed with fishing, and I love chilling nearby in a hammock with a book. The river is right next to the campsite, which included a firepit, two picnic tables, and a porta potty. Which was super clean, you can tell it's regularly maintained. We caught one good sized rainbow trout, and probably would have caught a whole lot more, but we happened to be there on a stormy weekend, so the weather wasn't ideal. But we'll definitely be back again soon!
