Phantom Hill Forest Retreats

Magical place! We were a large group with several children ages 0-10, and the kids were all in heaven on your property! Not only was it perfect for a large group, but there was so much to do on the grounds! We all loved learning about mushrooms, and the hike with gnomes and trinkets was so enjoyable for everyone! Thank you so much. We look forward to returning at a future time! 🍄🥰

The BEST camping spot!

This was our second time camping at Phantom Hill and it has easily become our absolute favorite place to camp as a family! Kathryn is truly a wonderful host who has thought of everything to make the experience simply phenomenal. We previously stayed at the Hummingbird campsite but this time we decided to try Waterthrush and it was just as lovely! We loved the string lights and hammocks, and it’s so convenient having a grill, chairs and tables all available to use! The forest is so beautiful and we loved walking the trails and my kids especially loved the treasure hunt! It was so cool seeing the mushroom farm too! As if there isn’t enough to do, they even have an Imagination Station where the kiddos can paint rocks and play games! This place is just MAGICAL. ✨ Kathryn is always such an accommodating host! When my husband and I realized we had a hole in our air mattress we brought, I texted Kathryn about renting a mattress pad and she was there in minutes! She goes above and beyond for her guests! Also highly recommend purchasing the natural soap from the Honor Shop. It smells amazing!!! If you want a very private camping experience with great perks and beautiful foliage, trust me, this is your spot. We cannot wait to come back!

Perfect for groups!

My group had a wonderful time camping at the Hummingbird site this weekend! The space was fantastic with plenty of tent space and areas to sit around the fire. We ended up using the grill and picnic table for dinner before roasting smores over the fire. I would 100% recommend.

Magical Camping Spot!

Truly phenomenal camping spot! This spot was a perfect combination of wild (it felt very private and quiet) and well-appointed (awesome site setup with chairs, hammocks, and other camping amenities). We were able to relax and enjoy ourselves with walks around the property‘s winding trails and delight in all the little things the owner had done to make it unique (don’t miss Mushroom Land!). We also went to the nearby brewery/winery and had a fun evening listening to live music and drinking tasty drinks. We’re already talking about when we can go back! This is a don’t-miss spot if you’re looking to get away.

Great Experience

It was such a beautiful place to stay. There was plenty of room for tents for our grown children and grandkids. But for us, to have a camper to sleep in at our age was a bonus! Ice and water were added in as requested! The kids loved finding treasures on the hike, and we replaced with treasure we brought! It is clean and just a great family friendly experience.

A true oasis and magical retreat!

We stayed at Waterthrush (all the campsites are named after birds!) with our group of 8 kids ages 2-8 and 6 adults. We were able to fit three 4-6 person tents at the site with a little creativity. It was so nice to have the seating, grill, and hammocks provided. We had four wonderful nights there. There was minor road noise, FYI, but the site is great and private from the other sites and public areas of the property. The composting toilet/outhouse was very clean and pleasant. Kathryn was very responsive and a truly wonderful host. She was gracious and accommodating with a booking error I made, and she helped save the day when one of our vehicles needed a jump start. The whole property is beautiful. We loved exploring the trails, mushroom operations, and the imagination station. Our kids were in heaven with the trails, creek, and treasure boxes and gnomes to discover. We have already booked a trip for next year!

Great campsite for families!

We live 30 minutes west of this property and were looking for something that would be easy to do with kids on a whim. This campsite (we were at Waterthrush) absolutely came through on its promises. We were there late in the season so the creek wasn't really something the adults could enjoy but the children loved splashing through it and looking for tadpoles. The grill/cooking implements, furniture, stack of split firewood and solar string lights onsite made for a very pleasant and comfortable stay. There is a single shared compost toilet / outhouse at the moment about a 3 min walk from the site, and while I had hesitations about using it initially, I can honestly say it is the cleanest outhouse I have ever seen and will likely ever see. What's more, the host told me as we were leaving that there are plans to install one for each site. As far as the host, our only direct interaction was a positive one and she was very accommodating about an issue she had no control over. My only note I would relay is that on the side of the site that is slightly upriver from where the furniture is staged, it may be more difficult to find a level spot for a larger tent. Downriver there was a large flat area. Hope you have a chance to enjoy this property soon!

Phobe was an awesome site. The farm was awesome. My three kids had a blast. The trials and the treasure hunting/ gnome and seek had them enjoying the hike. The honor firewood was also located at the site I nice touch when you want privacy.

Family reunion in tents

We had a really great time! 11 of us hung out and relaxed with four doggies. It was very private and having the creek entertained the doggies and kids. Such a cute set up. The solar powered lights and grill came in handy.

🌲 Great private camping spot with a pleasant vibe! 🌲 We really enjoyed our stay at this campsite. The location felt private and peaceful — perfect for relaxing and getting away from it all. The environment was lovely, surrounded by nature and very quiet, which made it easy to unwind. The bathrooms were clean and well-kept, which we appreciated; the only small downside was that they weren’t right next to our campsite, so it took a short walk. Overall, it was a great experience, and I’d definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a quiet, comfortable place to camp! 🌿⛺✨

OK – some really great aspects, and some distractors. First – Positive – 1) follow the instructions exactly and you will find the trailhead. For Phoebe, you must, must turn right at the 4x4 sign. 2) The site is beautiful. 3) The site was amply supplied 4) Don’t worry about kindling. There is gobs around the woods. 5) The owners are super communicative. 6) There is a very cool clean compostable toilet, but far 7) The blue trail hike was fun 8) You really feel like you are camping in the wild 9) You learn something about harvesting shitake mushrooms (1 year!) Negative – 1) You get to the trailhead and have no idea how to get your camping gear to the site. 2) There are stumps at the campsite. I tripped over the same one so many times that my husband took it out with an axe. 3) There is no truly level ground at Phoebe. Catbird offers two level spaces. We were all at slight angles, which was complicated. 4) There is a main house, which might also be rented – blaring everything from country to metal music on Saturday night. The noise restrictions did stop this on time but did I have to endure “Back in Black” at full volume at 6:28 on a camping trip with my son? 5) The picture in hipcamp depicts a woman floating in a wide stream. Hmmm. The deepest water we found was next to the Catbird site. The water next to Phoebe was a trickle. All in all a good experience, but for $90/night, I would have chosen Catbird or a cabin somewhere else.

We had so much fun staying here! The swing was a big hit for my 11 year old. He loved it. The entire property is beautiful and well setup for guests. It was easy to walk around and explore. The RV was super cute and had everything we needed. I definitely recommend getting some water and the mushrooms. Having water on site made things so much easier and the mushrooms were delicious. Would definitely go back again!

Incredible biodiversity

This was our second time staying at this site, and we’d love to keep coming back every year. It’s a great campsite and beautiful piece of land with incredible biodiversity (we saw even more interesting critters than we did a year ago when we visited, so the hosts are clearly being great stewards to the land) . Our son had the time of his life catching beetles and playing in the lovely stream. The hosts are kind and were so helpful. It was cool to walk the trails a bit too and learn about shiitake farming!

A perfect campsite! We stayed at waterthrush and Kathryn thought of everything you might need for a seamless camping experience. The mini “pool” and mushroom farm were such fun additions too. Close enough to bathrooms/parking and far enough from other campsites. Def would recommend!

We loved camping at Phantom Hill!

We stayed at Phoebe Easter weekend 2025. No need to bring chairs, hammocks, a stove, gas, or a table because they're already there! You can pay a extra for a large bottle of water (with spigot), a screened tent for the table, and shiitake mushrooms (we put them on campfire pizza). You can also buy a mushroom log - it will produce mushrooms for 5 years! A beautiful creek that runs alongside all sites, which are far apart. Managers are super nice and helpful! They replied to HipCamp messages quickly. I had 3 bars of cell service (Verizon). There is a short walk to a composting toilet, which has no odor. They decorated it beautifully and added a hand washing station outside. Lots of trails that are very wide. They created a scavenger hunt with clues to find statues throughout the trails and treasure boxes (similar to geocaching) - you can take a trinket and add a trinket. We spent hours in their canvas hammocks. One tip for the Phoebe site... When using the cart to carry your supplies down to site, stand behind the cart to steer it and instead of going down the trail head to Phoebe, walk down the 4x4 road and take the 1st left - it's a bit longer, but not as many stumps on the path, so the cart is easier to control. I highly recommend Phantom Hill Farm!
