Experience Lower Ballou Mountain at the Base Camp Located in West Halifax, a small Southern Vermont town just north of the Massachusetts border, Base Camp sits along the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST) trail, tucked into the side of Ballou Mountain—one of many breathtaking peaks in the Green Mountains. The views here never fail to leave visitors enamored. Set up for primitive camping, Base Camp is a clean slate for anyone seeking the peace and quiet of the Vermont woods. The site is not equipped for RV hookups or indoor amenities. But what it lacks in facilities, it more than makes up for with direct access to incredible local hiking and easy on/off access to the VAST trail, which leads to the summit of our beloved Ballou Mountain. Bring your mountain bikes or ATVs and get exploring! Adventure at Base Camp is rewarding year-round. In the warmer months, pack your swimming gear for a dip at nearby South Pond—a perfect spot for kayaking as well. Don’t forget to stock up on supplies in Greenfield, MA (about 30 minutes away), or from one of the many local farm stands before heading off the grid. (Technically off the grid—but yes, there’s cell service here for those who can’t go fully unplugged!) As kids, we both spent countless hours exploring the woods, soaking up everything nature had to offer. Now, as adults and partners, we’re grateful to share that same love of the outdoors with others. With the support of our wonderful Vermont neighbors—who take pride in doing things the right way—we’ve built a retreat that embodies serenity. Perched on Ballou Mountain, Base Camp is more than just a campsite—it’s an invitation. Come and see for yourself.Experience lower Ballou Mountain at the Base Camp. (Technically off the grid, but cell-service can be found at the site, for those who can’t bear the thought of being sans-technology!) As children, we each spent ample time in the woods, exploring whatever nature could offer us. Now, as adults and partners, we are lucky to share our love for the outdoors with each other, and have been bestowed the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to welcome others into this special place that we have curated from the ground up. Of course, we had help from wonderful Vermont locals who pride themselves in doing things “the right way.” Being perched on Ballou Mountain truly epitomizes serenity, let us prove it to you.
