We adored the North Shelter at Big Sky. It’s the perfect place for this kind of terrain. It protects you from wind, and is rather warm when it’s cold outside. We celebrated Thanksgiving and enjoyed our meal in the shelter in our warm and cozy tent.
It’s a short distance to signal- only 15ish minutes till your phone starts notifying you of all the messages that were sent when you were in your little slice of Heaven. From the nearest town it’s another 15 to get to the national park. One of my fav moments was when we decided to lay low that day and read our books at camp.
The views are spectacular. The sunrise is equally stunning as the sunset with mountains on both sides. The night time. Just wow. It was nice to have the provided chairs, one is reclined and made it so comfortable to sit back and just take the stars in.
This trip was nothing short of memorable, and it wouldn’t have been as glorious if it wasn’t for this camp site. We will definitely be using it again the next time we want to enjoy the park.

Instructions sent by the host were very clear and campsite was easy to find during the day. Shelter was great to keep out the wind and dirt. Stars were amazing and was in a beautiful location.

A great, secluded shelter that's not only got shade, but it's great at blocking the wind! Although it's a little over a mile off the pavement, I had zero issues getting my fully loaded Goldwing motorcycle there and back numerous times. The host was super communicative and responsive to questions, really put my mind at ease for a first HipCamp experience. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

The shelter was really nice while it was windy. It kept our tents and things safe from the wind and the heat as well. We had a really good time. The views were great and the hosts were friendly.

This place was really close to the park entrance, which made for an easy drive to BBNP. We were able to fit our 4 person tent inside the shelter, which turned out to be a good idea as the winds get really strong out there. Great views of the stars at night and very quiet, even though a couple of other rentals are near by. No cell signal, but that was part of the goal. Camp owner was really good at communicating and providing super helpful information. Would definitely camp there again.

I really enjoyed my visit! It was very quiet and peaceful. The site was very easy to get to and find, and my tiny car made it easily over the bit of dirt roads on the way. Overall, it was a beautiful campsite and I’d recommend it to anyone!!

SKY Ranch was a lovely sheltered campsite about 2 miles off the main road into Study Butte. We enjoyed the solitary nature of the site and particularly appreciated the shelter one night when the winds were 25 mph. The coyotes woke us both mornings!

Needs better trail markings. Especially for the Ramada. The host mentioned that it may be windy. That is probably for that entire section of Texas. I couldn’t do anything in the open until the evening when it turned very pleasant. It’s most ideal for an overland rig.

Absolutely loved this site. Felt so peaceful and far enough away from the other sites. The shelter building was such a nice touch especially since our first night was quite windy. We had the most incredible showing of stars and got to see Donkeys and coyotes wander near by! Easy to get to from Terlingua.

Sky Ranch was a great shelter to camp at on my way out of Big Bend. Plenty of dark sky here as well. Just had a chance to bike before I lost daylight but mountain biking the roads here would be fun too. This is an easy (and quick) site to get to just off of highway with direct instructions provided by host.

Really enjoyed my stay here, it's a great place to set up your tent and not have it blown away by the desert wind. I brought a solar shower bag here with me and it was great for taking a shower after the long day. It's probably the closest place to the national park, aside from being in the park itself. There is no cell service out here, or in the town, pretty much at all. I downloaded offline maps and put a marker on where the site was, it made it easier to find once I got there. I also saved the gps coordinates. This campsite is a great place for watching the stars, getting away from it all and just listening to the sound of nature.

Sky Ranch is a terrific base for adventuring around Big Bend. I stayed 2 nights in April (50's at night) and was able to enjoy vast views, camp fires in the fire pit and stunning dark skies.
If you are generally self-sufficient and comfortable in the outdoors, the shelters at Sky Ranch provide a welcome level of protection from the elements (it got really windy at night). Be sure to pack in enough water, firewood, a camp mattress, layers of clothing and tent tarps. I would consider bringing a pop-up privacy tent to stake down with the camp toilet but it's also a short ride into town for services.

Very useful amenities like flashlights, lighter fluid, picnic table, chairs etc. Would definitely stay again and recommend to others!

We loved the South Shelter. We could see the next shelter but it was not too close, definitely could not hear anything. The road is unpaved but easy to get in and out even with a small trailer attached. The view is just amazing on all sides.

We loved our stay at the North Shelter! The owner was very responsive with all of my questions and the shelter was easy to find with the provided directions. The land that the shelter sits on is thriving with wildlife and the sunrises/sunsets here are incredible. The shelter itself provided relief from the wind at night and the heat of the sun during the day. I will definitely be staying here the next time I make my way to Big Bend!

Great campsite for close proximity to Big Bend. The shelter was well-made, clean, and built perfect to protect against the howlin wind. Short drive into town and to maverick junction entrance. No cell service so get used to being outside. satellite phone will work great. Super quiet and secluded. Beautiful view of the stars. Road is well paved. Just an fyi to travelers- Bring your own firewood. Bundles are expensive and small at the market in town.
