We had a great time on an overnight camping trip to this site. Ms April took our group of 4 adults and 4 children on an awesome horseback ride as well.
The site had lots of ants due in part to the heavy rains we had prior to our stay.

Nice place. April was very accommodating. There was too much wind to say in the Teepee. We camped in tents. There was too much wind to use the water, we flew kites. We had a great time, but we were very flexible. Keep an open mind and you'll have fun, too!

April has made such a neat space only an hour from Dallas. My kids got to ride horses and actually learn how to work with them (vs. just walking in a line) - they LOVED it. Thank you April.

We brought our small RV and Tent and were in Tent Camping site 1 which had a picnic table, water and the restrooms were nearby. We went to the nearby Aubrey Oaks Alpaca Farm in the morning, (be sure to make reservations in advance), then went hiking on the Randy Bell Scenic Trail at Ray Roberts Isle du Bois State Park and then returned to camp for archery and enjoyed smores and campfire stories at the large campfire area. The campsite didn't have much in the way of shade, so consider bringing your own canopy or tarp.
If you plan to go horseback riding or archery, be sure to coordinate with the host in advance and bring carrots to feed the horses.

My 2 boys (8 and 10) had a blast. One of their favorite hip camps yet. We fished both ponds, rode horses and walked the trails. April was a gracious host and very patient and informative while teaching the boys some basics of horseback riding. Will definitely be coming back. Thank you for hosting us, April!

My daughter and I really enjoyed the land, horses, trails, and chickens. April took the time to make our stay the best possible and appreciated the flexibility in checkout time especially with just a one night stay.

Great place to experience nature, not too far of a drive. The pond in the back is great for panfish fishing, the kids had a lot of fun pulling those fish out! True camping experience to gather your own firewood. The renovated outdoor kitchen looks great!

Hammock Camping
We really enjoyed our time! There is a lot of quiet wooded area with trails behind the campsite to explore and you can tell April has really put a lot of love and time into her property. Don’t be afraid to explore, the trails go a lot deeper than we realized on the first day.
We really enjoyed exploring around. She has mailboxes throughout the trails. My daughter could check the mail and read facts about wildlife. There is even an entire park built in the woods. Lots of hand made children’s crafts along the way like paver stones to find and admire. She offered us tons of activities like horseback riding, canoes/kayaks, hammocks.
She even has a cute little ranch dog that came down to meet us a few times and is super sweet. Amazing place for kids to explore the outdoors while also staying entertained the entire time. We could have easily spent multiple days out here!

We loved it out here! April was an amazing host. We went horseback riding & kayaking. Our 5yo and 10yo had a blast! We pitched our tent right by a trailhead and went on daily hikes & adventures in the woods. We will definitely be back! Thank you April!

We had a great time staying the night at Camp Tonkawa. Perfect place for my first time camping. Easy access to water and compost toilets, and a fun place to explore. The horseback ride add on was a nice, fun addition.

This was our 4th hipcamp to bring the kids to, and they all said it was their favorite. Plenty to do. We paid for horses and archery, kids LOVED both. We set up our tipi at one of the trailheads which was fantastic for exploring kids, and also parent friendly (when bringing them for dinner). Almost no poison ivy anywhere! April was terrific, education & nature are her passion and that made the experience all the better. She was so inclusive of the kids, I think they felt valued when she asked for their help to set up the tipi. Definitely coming back!

Woodland Tipis at Horse Camp
April is a wonderful host with a beautiful property. The area we were in was very private and had easy access to multiple trails. Her and Sarah were also incredible with our horseback riding experience to ensure we were all comfortable and had a great time.

Tent Camping at Nature & Horse Camp
What an amazing stay! April is a kind and knowledgeable host. Her communication was A+ and she's super hospitable. The property is easy to find, and quite well maintained. We just took a quick 2 night trip in December to get away, and absolutely loved it. On the second day we organized a trail ride with April, again she was super accommodating. The kids were allowed to help groom the horses and get them ready. Then we got some basic instruction and a nice mid morning ride exploring the property. Overall, a very cool place- very safe, we felt fine letting the kids explore the woods and the parkour course by themselves. And it looks like we just scratched the surface. Around the camp you'll find evidence of boy scout projects, and camping classes, all sorts of great activities going back at least 20 years. I can't wait to organize a bigger group event in the spring. We'll absolutely be back. If you're on the fence at all, just book now. You won't regret it.

The campsite was large and lovely, with lots of trees and a big fire ring. April was a kind and generous horse riding teacher. My six year old loved it so much!

What an amazing night!! Wide open field for camping and tons to do around. The horse back riding made my daughter and wifes weekend!! Neither had ever ridden before. These guys made it all comfortable and enjoyable!! We cant wait to come back!!

I have been longing for all the things this camp experience offered! Horse grooming, hiking, outdoor adventure, comforts of a warm camper, friendly animals, and horseback riding! I loved every moment of reconnecting with nature’s beauty in such a special way. Even with two other families camping I never heard them or rarely saw them. Every inch of Camp Tonkawa is so inspiring in eco friendly craftsmanship and drawing one closer to the grounding of earth. April is an amazing hostess that works hard at making sure all the details of your camp experience are comfortable, fun and exceed your expectations. She was available at a moments notice to answer questions and a joy to get to know while trail riding. Thoroughly enjoyed this HipCamp experience and will be back again!

We loved our stay. It was above and beyond our expectations. April the host was fantastic. The camp is beautiful, the horses were awesome, and the trails make you feel you are out in the wildernesses. We can’t wait to go back.

This is a fantastic spot for Hipcampers. April owns and operates a small nature camp with multiple activities and amenities. We live in the city of Dallas, and it took us about 1 hour and 15 minutes to get there. It was easy to find. April had multiple campsites available for us and she was totally accommodating. We set up camp, hiked on trails on the property. We could have fished, and we did go horseback riding, which was a huge bonus for my daughter. The composting toilets were clean and made all that a non-issue. Great fire pit. I highly recommend this spot.

This was our first time camping with our 2 boys and we are so glad we chose April's beautiful property for a weekend getaway! We all had a great time fishing, horse back riding, exploring, and eating smores by the fire. April was a very welcoming host and answered all our questions promptly. The kids loved the camping experience and can't wait to go back!

April was so kind to show us around her beautiful property! Very shaded and private campground with horses and a sweet dog names Paisley. She offered us her extensive library full of very informative books. Compost toilets were very clean and a short walk away from the camp site. There was a large fire pit. Unfortunately, we did not bring strong enough mosquito spray so if you plan on visiting before the winter make sure you buy some with Diet as they can be quite intense at the campsite near the woods. We will be back in the winter!
