Camp Mountaineer is located at Massawepie Scout Camps, 65 Massawepie Road in Piercefield, NY - just west of Tupper Lake. The campground features a variety of camping options to suit your group’s needs—cabins, RV sites, tent sites, and group campsites are all available. Various amenities are provided to make your stay even more enjoyable. Situated in the North Central Adirondacks, Camp Mountaineer provides an opportunity for great on-site outdoor recreation as well as a jumping off point to adventures throughout the Adirondack Park. The facilities and services available at Camp Mountaineer make this a great choice for your family or groups’ adventure. Camp Mountaineer is owned and operated by the Greater Finger Lakes Council, Scouting America headquartered in Rochester, NY. First opened as a Scout camp in 1953, Mountaineer now serves as a campground equipped to suit your group’s needs. Any group can make a reservation. Our 2026 Rental Season runs July 2 -August 7

Skylight Lodge is a rustic, refurbished Scout camp trading post that can sleep up to twelve overnight with bunk beds in two bunk-rooms (linens not provided). Skylight campers will have a full-size fridge, a hand-washing station, a microwave, stove, oven, and coffeepot available in the cabin. A large table with benches and a seating area are in the main room. The dish washing room and Bathroom/Shower-house are located just across the road. A fire pit, deck, and several picnic tables allow for plenty of space to enjoy. Overflow parking is located a short walk away.

We had a very rainy day, but there was the great room to entertain us and stay dry. The fishing was awesome. Caught some fish for dinner. The kids swam. The facilities were great. Ben Geiger is a rock star. The work that had been done up there is awesome. I have lived here for 67 years and never stepped foot on the land. Christielee Geiger introduced me to the camping and I was hooked. We will be back next year. Just sitting by the camp fire listing to the night creatures is calming. Thank you for opening this up to the public. I have been spreading the news about thiscamp ground. People still thinks it's a boyscout camp.

We camped on a tent site that was on the water. A beautiful view and access to the water. My grandson caught some nice fish. We enjoyed the lodge on a rainy day, using the pool table as well as Foosball and ping pong tables. We used a canoe and enjoyed some swimming. Overall a great time.

Camp Mountaineer is a very special place and it was great to be back as adults and seeing it come back to life! Cabin Esther is conveniently located just a few steps from the shower house and the washroom, so all your amenities are taken care of, even if there is no bathroom/kitchen inside the cabin. Even with the facilities nearby, the cabin still feels secluded and private. While we didn't have time to use them, the swimming area and boats are a great bonus. Will definitely take advantage of that next time we stay! Matt and his staff are very friendly and helpful.

This place is just delightful. The sites are spaced out and you get to have privacy. The mountain road is rocky and long, but if you drive the limit (10 MPH) it’s manageable and scenic. It’s obvious they’re trying to preserve the historic scout camp vibe and it’s great to see all the plaques still hanging in the former dining hall. It’s very rustic, but if you’re looking for somewhere peaceful to camp that’s near some high peaks, then this is where to be.

I can’t speak highly enough about our time at Camp Mountaineer!! The grounds are stunning, the facilities were really well-maintained, and Matt was a great host! We loved paddling around the lake and exploring the bog nearby (highly recommend taking the white trail!) Already planning our next trip to lovely Lake Massawepie!

Mountaineer was great! It was a 20ish minute hike on the white trail to get to Pioneer where my husband and son were. It was pretty buggy the first night but it got better. The manager was very responsive and helpful. Such a beautiful spot. Highly recommend and plan to return!

I spent two nights in this cabin and had a great time. You should know beforehand that it is quite rustic, but that’s also what makes its charm. On top of that, the staff was absolutely amazing—super friendly and incredibly helpful. A wonderful place to disconnect!

The campground was great! They have nice clean showers with hot water and good pressure. There’s a wash room to clean dishes. The lake was beautiful and we were able to take canoes to explore it! The kids swam in the lake as well. The staff were very friendly and helpful! There are small trails to walk around on the territory of campground. There’s the Wild Center 20 minutes away that is a must to visit. I would highly recommend to go there! And we want to get back next year as well!

Overall Massawepie Scout Camps is a beautiful property with amazing options and adventures. Camp Mountaineer offers the general public a wonderful opportunity to have access and explore the area. Redfield Campsite was conveniently located by the shower houses, washroom, rec center, and waterfront. The common facilities are neat and clean. Fellow campers in both RV, tents, and cabins were courteous. We did visit on 4th of July weekend so there was more than usual vehicle traffic up and down the camp road with fellow campers enjoying the Tupper Lake festivities. Camp Redfield is a smaller site, picnic table and fire pit provided, I recommend no more than two tents and four people. Matt and Michelle are great and helpful hosts.

My boyfriend and I had a great stay with our golden doodle. Cabin Esther was perfect and close to the water and bathroom/shower. It was so quiet and peaceful. We felt a warm welcome right away from the staff. Would recommend to anyone.

Such a great find! This campsite was really awesome and you get so much for the price. We stayed in an RV site and had plenty of tree buffer between us and the next site. The bathrooms were nearby and this direct access to miles of beautiful hiking trail right at the site. We also had a lot of fun at their beach and rec center. We are definitely interested in coming back.

Dix cabin is great! I would definitely go back again. It’s very secluded (about a mile off-road), far away from other sites- so very private, and had everything necessary for one or two people. It’s a nice bonus that you have access to all the campground facilities (including boats for the lake). The camp caretaker was also very friendly and helpful.

RV 4 Basin
Massawepie holds a special place in our scouting family. Kids attended and worked there, adults attended as leaders. The hip camp portion is on the old scout camp known as Camp Mountaineer. The Rv sites are basic with 30amp power and water. The waterfront is basic but functional. There are shower houses and a recreation building with games and hang out area. They have only been renting “Family Camp/Camp Mountianeer” for a few years. Every year we return for a few nights to drop off or pickup a scout at a camp Pioneer down the lake. Every year the facilities and offerings are better. The only issue we have is the dump station is poorly designed and difficult to dump at because of its location at the top of a small rise in the parking lot. It is impossible to have the trailer level at the dump station. The sewer inlet is also recessed in a box that makes it so you have to continuously lift the sewer hose to get the black and gray tanks flow over the edge of the box.

It's a beautiful secluded lake down a half a mile road. Just bring your own bedding and enjoy the nature with no wifi. The owner is helpful and the area is not far from Tupper lake.

The facility is excellent--wild, peaceful and lots to do. Campground host , mr. matt, is a great person and will help you in any way. Showers and cabins are good, some better than others since they are still upgrading as much as possible on what funds are available. Lake is sandy and warm. thank you

We tent camp at Colden campsite. The booking was easy and the communication was excellent. The site was a nice open field in the woods within a short walk to showers and latrines. There was a stone fire ring and picnic table on the site.

The RV spots were far apart with lots of trees. There was a nice walking trail right behind the campsite. It was lovely and peaceful. Matt was very nice and helpful. It was a pleasure to camp at an old oy Scout site!

It was nice having running water (+ shower) for me who hadn't camped in over 25 years! Trails clearly marked to get to rec hall and beach. The check in process was easy enough. Glad I had my Jeep to get up the hills to the cabin!

This is a great campground on a beautiful lake in walking distance of rare, huge bog. There is lots of scout activity across the lake so don’t be surprised by yelling and cheering, especially in the evenings. There are also day campers who use the area. The hot showers are a nice touch.
