We invite you to come stay at this truly unique and stunning Hipcamp outpost located within the Rio Grande Del Norte Nat'l Monument and 35 minutes NW of Taos. Nestled beneath the southern flank of an extinct volcano, Cerro Montoso, and right in the middle of our American Rift Valley! Millennia of history and more has this Taos Valley seen - with the area being a revered hunting ground for the Pueblo and Ute, and traversed by mountain men and traders alike along the Western portion of the Old Spanish Trail. In the early 1900's my great-uncle was fortunate enough to acquire the homestead claim where this location became home to the family cattle grazing and timber operations until the late 1970's. Now comes your opportunity to immerse yourself in the history of the land and area, trek to the additional volcanic cinder cones that dot the landscape of the Taos Plateau, where one has no shortage of hiking trails both on and off the property. Cerro Montoso, Cerro De La Olla, and Cerro Chiflo will make any outdoor enthusiast rejoice. The Miner's Trail leading all the way down to the Rio Grande (only accessible on the West side of the Rio Grande) is 2.5 miles East of the main gate, or soak in the John Dunn Hot Springs located 20 minutes to the south along the main county road. Spend the day on river and unwind by the campfire as stars light up the night. As one of the few Hipcamps in the area to offer such a varied mix of elevation and ample acreage we are pleased to share the land by way of Hipcamp, but for the true history buffs we offer guided ATV rides throughout the property as well as history hiking tours; outlining our family's centuries old, multi-generational presence in the Taos Valley and the echoes from the past that deserve to be heard. We hope to see you soon! Safe travels and thanks again! This dynamic and unique Hipcamp outpost is located approximately 35min NW of Taos within the Rio Grande Del Norte Nat’l Monument on the Taos Plateau - our American Rift Valley! Land of ancient volcanic cinder cones and cerros created from basalt lava flows. One has plenty of space to roam and ample options of 10 dispersed camp sites approximately 1/4 mile west of the main gate entrance. Whether it may be the main staging area, or a quaint spot at the base of the mountain in a patch of cedar trees. All sites are readily accessible from roads within the property. There is so much to do and see without even having to leave the property! For those wanting to do the Tio Willy's mountain hike - there are existing hiking and game trails leading to the summit (approx. 35 minutes to top), we kindly ask that guests please stay on the trails. Addt'l signage is on order. Also, one is able to walk/hike/bike along all the multiple trails on the property. Direct access to Cerro Montoso hiking trails via private property road on the SW side is ONLY accessible through this property. Directly to East across the main road one has access to the Miner's Trail - only accessible from the West side of the Taos Plateau. 20 minutes to the south is the John Dunn Hot Springs, and Ojo Caliente is approx. 1 hour drive to the South. While this site is not as close to town as the others, if one has all necessary essentials it is a campers paradise! We are able to accommodate for various items such as toothbrushes, deodorant and general toiletries but we have a General Outpost Store coming soon. Please do bring lots of water, sunscreen and lip balm. The weather extremes and elements can vary greatly depending on the season, and coupled with the sun and elevation will test even the most hardy adventurer. We hope to see you soon! **We can host large group events for those interested in booking the entire property! Catering CAN be arranged with prior notice and menu discussion. Please inquire with host. Firepits and firewood provided by courtesy of the Dragonfly Mountain Ranch.
