Art City Camp and RV Retreat is a 40-acre art glamping park about five miles off historic Route 66 in Tucumcari, New Mexico — a place to stay among large outdoor art, with cabins, glamping trailers, tent sites, and RV sites, and nights when the sculptures and paths light up.
ON SITE NOW: the Museum of No Spectators, a large Burning Man piece; Evolution Field, the colorful wavy structure on the west walking path; Paradisium Forest, back in the trees; and Autumn Spire, by the pond — plus climbable cube structures, a DJ center, a communal kitchen, and an outdoor spa (cedar soaking tubs, barrel sauna, outdoor showers) with a fire pit. The spa is included with every stay; day visitors can add a spa pass for $25. Tent camping sits by the red corrals and back by Paradisium Forest, with compost toilets and the Lip Sink nearby, and our tree line borders 250 acres of BLM land we have private trail access to.
HOW ART CITY STARTED: Art City was created by artist Matty Monahan, who brought large Burning Man pieces here to bring art back to Tucumcari. Some of the original pieces have since traveled on to new homes — that's what this art does. The four anchor pieces above are what you'll find here today, and new owners Mandi & Dennis (July 2026) are reopening the artist residency so the park keeps filling back up with art. If you feel inspired to create something while you're here — please do. That's what this place is for.
Day passes are $5 per person (free for children under 5); day visitors are welcome sunrise to 5 PM during winter hours. Come rest, wander, climb, soak, and see what's being made.

Art City offers a unique blend of art and camping, providing a memorable experience for visitors. The hosts, Dennis and Mandy, are consistently praised for their warm welcome and helpfulness. Guests enjoy exploring the extensive art installations, particularly at night when the pieces are illuminated. Amenities like clean bathrooms, outdoor showers, and a communal kitchen enhance the stay, though some visitors noted the need for more established camping spots.
Loved Art City! So cool to be able to walk around and see all the art, which I didn’t even have time to see all of in a single day. Love that there are showers, an outdoor kitchen and both flush and composting toilets everywhere too. Dennis and Mandy are stellar hosts that took the time to welcome me in and show me around as well! Really felt at home here
Wonderful stay. My kids had a great time exploring and making a new friend. We stayed up late hanging out in the communal area having great conversations. Camp is well kept and felt very comfortable using all the facilities. We even tried out the hot tub.
Will be back!
Great spot with loads of potential! Denis and Mandi met us upon arrival and showed us around. They just purchased the place in July and you can see the love and care they’re pouring into it. The grounds were well kept and lit for an evening walk. Everything was extremely clean and tidy. We arrived later in the day and did walk around after dark, but weren’t around to fully appreciate all of the exhibits that weren’t lit for night (show up earlier in the day to have time to see everything !). We enjoyed our stay and would definitely consider returning if we’re in the area, even if only for a day visit.
Amazing, unique treasure if you’re exploring Route 66 or just looking for a fun place to visit. It’s like a mini Burning man of art installations that are amazingly lit up at night! It has clean amenities and wonderful, gracious host!
Great place to stay in Tucumcari! We were road tripping and wanted a spot off the beaten path - so glad we found Art City! We will definitely be back. The hosts Mandi and Dennis were welcoming and kind.
We absolutely loved it. First night of real sleep in over 2 weeks on the road. Hosts were very welcoming, and the light displays at night were the best.
We had a great time at Art City!
The bathrooms were immaculate and there were two outdoor showers available. I don't believe I've ever taken a shower while camping before.
We brought a stove but ended up utilizing the public kitchen. There was a gas stove and all the amenities of an indoor kitchen.
My son and I had a great time hiking the camp/art space! Fun to hike during the day and the place was wonderfully lit at night.
I would strongly recommend stopping by and staying the night.
We really enjoyed ourselves!
This 40-acre art playground was the perfect overnight adventure for my dog Bandit and I to expl9re on our cross country trip. Beautiful communal facilities like an outdoor kitchen and showers... even a hot tub. The place really comes alive at night with lights. I highly recommend this gem.
Art City is a unique, AWESOME experience!!! Pedingo, the site manager/artist, was extremely helpful in helping us get our RV set up. We had an extra special experience as it snowed one night that we were there, the entire site was a magical white wonderland. Since it was a bit chilly outside, sitting in the sauna was a nice treat. If you plan to RV there you might want to bring extra long hoses and electrical cords, but if you don’t have them they might be able to help out with those. I would definitely recommend this site and plan on returning some day
This place is so Awesome! An amazing little Oasis in the middle of the New Mexico High Desert ranch land. Wonderful accommodations around the bath house. Great views of the Western Sky, Friendly host. I would 100% visit again.
Art City in Tucumcari is hands-down one of the most memorable camping spots I’ve ever visited. The campsites are spacious and private, the bathrooms are spotless, and the outdoor kitchen actually makes cooking fun. Everywhere you look, there’s inspiring art tucked into the desert landscape, making wandering around feel like a mini adventure. The energy is relaxed and creative, and sunsets here are unforgettable. It’s more than camping—it’s an experience that sticks with you long after you leave.
I initially booked my spot for 2 nights and extended it to 6. The art is phenomenal and everything else has been meticulously thought out and executed. The staff and Matty were extremely friendly, welcoming, and gracious. Everything, from the compostable toilets to showers and kitchen, sets this camping spot apart from any others I have been to. I truly fell in love with Art City and I highly recommend it.
We van camped in a beautiful spot under the cottonwoods with access to water & power. We loved exploring the art work during the day & at night. Some really cool lit up night time pieces!!! The kitchen, bath house & toilets were immaculate & had plenty of hot water. The manager was so knowledgeable about the art!! We highly recommend!!!
B, the caretaker made me feel right at home. The art installations were lovely. The sauna was perfect for the chilly desert night. Am absolutely going to come back through when in the area.
Art city is an amazing place to stay- beautiful. Outdoor art installations are illuminated at night for fantastic viewing. All the amenities are first class including hot showers, bathrooms, kitchens, etc. Well done, Matty, I hope it continues to go well you are a trailblazer!
Matty's Art City camp is my favorite when traveling the I40 Rt66 corridor. EZ to locate and close enough to town to explore and stock up. The staff is upbeat and helpful. Fellow campers and I agree that the shared spaces are fantastic. The art exhibits are over the top and I loved the young dog greeting me. Always something new, very pleasant 2 night Oct. stay Thanks
Beningo ( sp sorry) , our host was wonderful. He gave us such insight into Art City and his commitment was so real! We loved walking at night through the art installations but knowing some of the history behind the pieces made it so much better .
The facilities for cooking were most excellent .
The company enjoyable !
And the stars at night were inviting.
I would say “ stay more than a night for sure !”
You have to see it to believe it. Art City is such a joy to visit. I kept having to book more nights because I just couldn't leave that hot tub under the stars. The art installations that are spaced out all over the property are lit up so gorgeous at night. Bonus points because some of the art you can actually climb onto!!!! The bathrooms are soooo nice, full flush toilets and you will love the art in the bathrooms. Shower area and kitchen are both beautifully designed and functional. Cannot recommended this place more!!!!
Art City is a fun place to stay and I highly recommend it for anyone who’ll be in the Tucumcari area. We only stayed one night but could have easily stayed a few. The art is crazy fun and is perfect for anyone who likes to explore outdoors. The amenities are top notch for a camp and the hosts are super nice and helpful. They even went so far as to lend us tools to fix a bike. Just go when you get a chance!
Had such a great time at this beautiful place that I kept booking additional nights. Gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. A walk around the grounds is a dream, it's filled with art and sculptures!!! Some you can climb!!!!! Can't recommend a weekend stay and book a dip in the hot tub. Was able to relax and unwind here!!!! 10,000 thumbs up!!!!
This place is absolutely phenomenal. The art is well displayed and illuminated for two hours after dark or till batteries run low. The hot tub and sauna are a must do. Very clean environment but the weeds are pretty high. upon entry it states watch out for snakes but we did not see any. We did see several wild turkeys wandering around in the morning. The hostess very accommodating and showed the ropes of the property well. The art has all been displayed at burning man and is a must see.
This place feels magical. When I saw the Paradisium Forest it brought tears to my eyes. The care of collecting and then cutting each piece of wood to make something beautiful felt very grounding to me. Thank you Bendingo, for a nice evening.
Absolutely wonderful place to stay! Beautiful, clean, well kept grounds with clean and easy to use facilities. The art installations were incredible. We will definitely be back!
our host Beningo was the raddest dude ever! hope i am spelling this correctly! i have traveled all over the world and never seen a spot quite like this. from the “air ocean” wind sounds that shake all the leaves, the gang of wild turkeys cruising around, the beautiful trails and stellar fkn art displays… to being close enough to town to cruise 10 minutes to get a great cup of coffee from jackalope or hit the lowe’s supermarket and make dinner w the onsite shared facilities. not only can you camp. but the place is immaculate. the amenities blew me away. i am tired of typing. JUST GO HERE!
