Shantytown on Mink Brook

Shantytown is a 1.5 acre Nature and Art Sanctuary on the banks of Mink Brook in Hanover, NH. We are surrounded by 120 acres of Nature Preserve and located .3 miles from the Appalachian trail. Shantytown was developed, starting in 1984, by environmental activist, master builder/collector and sustainability expert, David Vincelette, using materials from recycled buildings. Dave runs Shantytown with his wife, Anna, a Ukrainian Artist, Naturalist, Mushroom expert and lover of fairytales. Dave and Anna build and heat with recycled wood and share bonfires with AT hikers, Artists, Dartmouth students, Professors and lovers of Nature. Visitors enjoy swimming, at the waterfall and Baptismal, hiking on brookside trails, wildlife watching, jumping on the outdoor trampoline and making art in a stunning Natural setting. Dartmouth students named Dave's place Shantytown after he gave them used building materials to build Shanties on the green to protest apartheid in South Africa. Students from India told Dave that Shanti means Peace and so Peace Town became Shantytown! A special place celebrating Truth, Freedom and the Natural World. Here you can see Deer, Bear, Bald Eagles, Mink and plentiful fish. Shantytown is an active recycling and renovating enterprise. Please help keep safe by leaving areas better than you find them and watching out for others. Shantytown's central location, one mile from the Hanover Inn, means that all of Hanover is easily accessible by foot. A free bus service provides transportation to main Street, Dartmouth and the Dartmouth Medical Center.
