Tucked among spruce, fir, and birch on Sunshine Island in Deer Isle–Stonington, Four Acre Woods began more than 60 years ago as a small, family-run campground known as Sunshine Campground. Travelers from across the world visited this quiet island forest, drawn to its raw beauty and the peaceful energy that generations before us had loved and cared for. The campground eventually closed in the 1990s and sat untouched for over 15 years—its trails, clearings, and old campsites slowly reclaimed by the woods. The land waited, quietly, for someone to bring it back to life. In the years that followed, Caleb, a longtime local operator on the island, took interest in the property. Recognizing both its history and its potential to offer people a deeper experience of Deer Isle’s natural beauty, he began the process of carefully restoring and reopening the land. Working season by season, Caleb rebuilt the sites, added new infrastructure, re-established utilities, and designed a campground that honors the land’s roots while offering a comfortable, modern, and nature-forward experience for today’s guests. In July 2020, the property reopened under a new name: Four Acre Woods. Today, it blends the spirit of the original Sunshine Campground with thoughtful stewardship, simple comforts, and a deep respect for the forest that surrounds it. Visitors once again gather under the birches and spruces—sharing campfires, slow mornings, quiet nights, and the timeless island calm that makes this land so special. So— Welcome Home. We absolutely loved our stay at Four Acre Woods Campground. If anything we wish we had stayed longer! The campsite was out on a very quiet island, truly not too far from our outings. We stayed on the primitive secluded site which was absolutely perfect. It was very spacious, with tons of privacy, located steps away from the community cabin. We wish we had more time to enjoy the community cabin as it was warm, filled with books, games, cookware, utensils, lanterns, ice, tea, coffee, local guides and cozy sofas. Our campsite additionally had a private walk way to the bathrooms, which we were pleasantly surprised by for a campsite! The shower was equipped with shampoo, conditioner and body wash if needed, and the bathroom was as clean as you could possibly expect a campsite bathroom to be! Firewood was easy to purchase and bring over to our campsite which we appreciated. The hosts were very kind and helpful and we truly hope to be back again next year to hopefully spend a much longer stay at the four acre woods and get a chance to experience the onsite sauna :) thanks so much for having us! Would 110% recommend. (Ps. Just beware of deer and wildlife on the drive in, it is deer isle after all ;) )

Birch Haven Yurt – Hand-Built 20ft

My son (age 12) and I have been to Four Acre Woods for the last 2 years and really enjoyed it. The first year we tent camped and this year we stayed in the yurt. The campground is very small, which we like and each site is unique. Lots of amenities for such a small campground, they really think of the little things that keeps camping comfortable. The yurt was wonderful and the campsite has everything you need (we brought too much stuff). Just bring yourself, clothes, and food and you are good to go. We are fairly local, so it is a great weekend getaway, but we don't really explore the area when camping. If you want to experience the downeast Maine coast away from the more touristy spots, this is where you want to go.

We loved staying in the yurt! It was perfectly private, adorable, and we were surprised by the incredibly comfortable beds. This was the perfect size for our family of 5. The community room was warm (literally had a wood stove going at 6am!), stocked with coffee and hot chocolate, and hosts and the space alike were welcoming and helpful.

Such a great spot. It’s quite off the beaten path but worth it as the drive was beautiful and the property was great. Very well thought out and clean campground. Great bath house, dish washing station, and laundry. We only stayed a night and didn’t have a chance to enjoy all the amenities but the sauna, community cabin and outdoor game area with horseshoes and cornhole were a nice touch.

What a sweet quiet beautiful campground! Honestly the nicest facilities I’ve ever experienced on HipCamp. Functions as a regular campground - extraordinarily friendly & helpful hosts, super clean bath house, and a well stocked community room. Don’t miss Conary Point Preserve - about a 1 mile walk to a wonderful strip of Maine coast :)

This camp ground has it all!! The community center had so much to offer. From games to espresso machine that includes the pods! Tea machine with lots of flavors to choose from. Had washer n dryer with detergent! Bath house had shampoo, conditioner and body wash! It was clean and peaceful. I would HIGHLY recommend this place!!!

Absolutely loved staying at Four Acre Woods Campground - 12/10 experience and will absolutely recommend and be back myself. We used the sauna both nights (such a special touch), made coffee/used the WiFi in the community cabin in the mornings to plan out our day, and really appreciated the clean and fully stocked shower/out house area. There was laundry available on site as well as an outdoor sink and any plates/bowls/utensils one could ever need available to borrow - they really have outfitted this place to be perfect for any level camper. Jeremy, Caleb and Willow were around most mornings if you had a quick question or needed anything but they’ve also made everything self serving which is appreciated. Trash and recycling was available within steps of any site and (other than one unfortunate loud neighbor one of our nights) the place quieted right down by 10 making for a great time to have a fire make s’mores and enjoy being outdoors. There was so much to explore in the gorgeous surrounding areas I feel like we just barely scraped the surface over three days. I cannot wait to book here again next summer and many more to come. Thank you for the hospitality & a great wonderful camping trip!!!

We really enjoyed our stay in one of the domes at Four Acre Wood. The tent was comfortable, and the campground had everything we needed. Conary Cove is a must-visit and we were pleasantly surprised by the selection at the local Hannaford in Blue Hill. We would definitely stay here again, and recommend it to friends.

We had a great two night stay at Four Acre Woods Campground. We stayed in the yurt, which we found cozy and perfect for our needs. The site itself was well appointed with two hammocks, a cute fire pit and plenty of seating around the campfire area. Our group loved the little community center for coffee in the morning, it was easy to purchase dry wood to burn (across from site) and we all felt like the bathrooms were clean and a short walk away.
