Nomadic camping
Best for self-contained campers. There are no toilets, showers, or potable water at this Hipcamp.
Red Gate Hollow is a secluded Appalachian camping property tucked away off a quiet side road in the hills of Estill County, Kentucky. A narrow access drive leads into the hollow, where the landscape rises dramatically toward surrounding cliffs on three sides, creating a private creek valley filled with forest, rock formations, springs, and wildlife. Explore the property on foot, climb the slopes for views overlooking the valley, and discover the six known natural springs that converge into a beautiful creek running through the hollow. Wild blueberry bushes grow naturally on the property during the season, and native wildlife is frequently seen throughout the landscape. Three creekside tent platforms are currently available for camping. Please refer to the property map for platform locations and access routes. Vehicles must remain parked before the red gate. The access drive has an approximately 8-foot clearance restriction due to trees and terrain. Larger vehicles, vans, or trailers should use caution and may prefer parking near the entrance. Camping areas beyond the gate are foot-access only. This is an off-grid camping experience with no utilities or hookups at this time. Guests should arrive prepared and practice Leave No Trace principles. Terrain is uneven, creek crossings may be necessary, and parts of the property remain intentionally rugged and wild. STRICT RULES: • NO FIRES • NO GUNFIRE • NO FIREWORKS • Pack out all trash Future plans for Red Gate Hollow include the Little Boy Nemo Memorial Garden, a peaceful creekside reflection space, as well as future RV camping areas and expanded nature-focused accommodations. Be safe, respect nature, and enjoy exploring the hollow.Three 12x12 wooden tent platforms are tucked into the lower hollow beside the creek, offering a more comfortable basecamp while still keeping the rugged off-grid experience intact. Vehicle parking is located only a short walk away along the gravel access pathway. The property is hidden away off a quiet side road and surrounded by steep wooded slopes and cliffs on three sides, creating a secluded Appalachian creek valley atmosphere. Explore the creek, climb the surrounding hillsides, and discover any of the six known natural springs that flow through the hollow. Wild blueberry bushes grow naturally on the property during the season, and native wildlife is frequently seen throughout the landscape. An old smoker cabin remains near the creek and adds to the character of the site, though it is not intended for guest use other than possible emergency rain shelter. Terrain is uneven and portions of the property remain intentionally wild. Guests should arrive prepared for primitive camping conditions and exercise caution around local wildlife, including snakes and other potentially dangerous animals. IMPORTANT: • NO FIRES • NO GUNFIRE • NO FIREWORKS • Pack out all trash NOTE: Maximum vehicle clearance on the access road is approximately 8 feet due to trees and terrain. Be safe, respect nature, and enjoy exploring Red Gate Hollow.
