We had a totally wonderful time at the "Hippie House," as this little shack is affectionately known to locals. The seclusion was unmatched, and luckily, the solar power, though modest, and the outdoor shower, though cold and quite smelly (that classic Florida water smell) were fully operational, and we used them appropriately-- the cold shower is great in the sunshine! The nighttimes were extremely exciting, and there were a lot of wildlife to listen to and look for in the moonlight. During the day, I spotted a piliated woodpecker and lots of osprey. As a bird lover, this place was pretty perfect.
I don't have many complaints-- we were comfortable in our solitude and in the wild, but I was disappointed in the state of the house. There were bugs in every window sill, dust settled on everything, and the little couch pictured inside the house was totally dilapidated and unusable. We picked up several pieces of trash from around the house, like plastic bottle caps and a discarded plastic bag that once held ice. The swimming area was beautiful in and of itself, but it was surrounded by construction material that was ripped down? One of the kayaks was destroyed, too. On our second day, someone who said they worked on the house had come to the property and was cutting down some trees while we were there, which we weren't expecting.
In general, I'd recommend this place to any one of my more outdoorsy friends. The beauty of Florida is definitely embodied in this space.
