The ranch was the site of a sawmill in the early 1900s when the old Rio Grande Southern and Galloping Goose Railroads ran through the property along the Dolores River. All that’s left now is a little shack in the middle of the meadow and some remnants of the railroad tracks in the river.

This cute and cozy a-frame is on a 50 acre semi-primitive campground just outside the historic Colorado mining town of Rico. Fish, ride or walk along the full mile of Dolores riverfront on the property, or head into town. Drive ~35 minutes to Telluride to take advantage of world-class outdoor recreation, dining, and festivities. Pet's are welcomed on the ranch for an additional fee of $20/dog. Wifi is available for an additional $5/day - please contact the host for access.

Riverside Big Canvas Wall Tent

Our riverside canvas wall tent feature a comfortable bed and fresh linens, solar powered battery to charge phones, a fan and lights. We also provide a lantern, a propane heater, a smoke and carbon monoxide detector and a fan. Large tent is 16’x20’ and features a comfortable king size bed and a queen size futon and can accommodate up four people. -Each site includes a fire ring, camp chairs and picnic table. Guests also have access to our fully stocked communal outdoor kitchens, yard games, fire pits and other on-site amenities. -There is no running water at the sites, however drinking water and water to clean up with will be provided for your stay. -There is no shower or toilet at the site. However, there is a clean and sustainable shared outhouse within a short walk of the sites. You are always welcome to visit the Matterhorn campground (15 minutes driving) for a $10 shower. -This space is off-grid, so please be aware there is no air conditioning. There is a fan you can use that runs off solar. This space is perfect from early morning until about 11am and then from around 4pm on. Mid day can be a bit hot and we suggest going out on day trips to explore and go on adventures. If you are booking in late May, September or October just be aware of the temperatures dropping.

Riverside A-Frame Cabin

Our private riverside cabins are located a few minutes walk from all the amenities the camp has to offer. The a-frame cabin provides a comfortable bed, fresh linens along with a solar powered battery to charge phones, a fan and lights. We also provide a lantern, a propane heater, a smoke and carbon monoxide detector and a fan. The cabins are 16’x22’ and feature a queen size bed and can fit two cots and can accommodate up to four people (ideally two adults and two children). -Each site includes a fire ring, camp chairs and picnic table. Guests also have access to our fully stocked communal outdoor kitchens, yard games, fire pits and other on-site amenities. -There is no running water at the sites, however drinking water and water to clean up with will be provided for your stay. -There is no shower or toilet at the site. However, there is a clean and sustainable shared outhouse within a short walk of the sites. You are always welcome to visit the Matterhorn campground (15 minutes driving) for approximately $10/shower. If you are booking in late May, September or October please be aware of the temperatures dropping. Pet’s are welcomed at camp for an additional fee of $20/dog. Riverside Big Canvas Wall Tent
Pictures do not do this place justice! The river is directly behind the tent, so it was perfect to fall asleep to the sound of the water! Community kitchen area has everything you need from seasonings, a grill, even a super neat pizza oven! 100000% recommend this gem of a place. There’s even a trail to walk to downtown if you’re feeling up to it!

Amazing A frame. Had a nice outside kitchen! Even a toilet on site. Right next to the creek and the sounds and views were beautiful. Will definitely be back!

This place is very beautiful! The hosts were very kind and helpful. It is a very peaceful place and not too far from Telluride. I drained my car battery on accident and they gave me a jump in the morning! Next time I am in the area I will definitely go back!

We really enjoyed staying at the ranch ! We were literally right on the rivers edge in a beautiful and secluded setting. Jaq was very helpful and attentive. Supplied wood every night and even a smores pack for the little one ! We will definitely be back when we are in the area next time

Great location, right on the river, and able to take the 1.5 mile trail to town. Jacqui and Ken were both extremely helpful and accommodating. We would definitely recommend and stay again.

Jacqui, Rick, and Major Henry were excellent hosts. The campground was wonderful, and I was lucky enough to experience both the campsite and a cabin. Campsite was clean, had amenities, and was right beside a beautiful sounding river. If you can sleep with that white noise, I'd suggest the cabin heh. Cabin was, again, clean, cute, and warm (temps were hovering around freezing when I visited). The bed was super comfy and there were places to plug in devices for charging and what not. Lastly, and this is a biggie, Jacqui and Rick were laid-back, friendly, and accommodating. They were excellent communicators and quickly responded to either text or calls. You could tell they loved the campground and took pride in making it better each day. They also offered suggestions on great hikes and day trips in the area. Major Henry (the pup) is mostly in charge of the campground, though he is on duty most of the day, he will take time from his rounds to come visit and play. :) Summarizing, excellent campground, worth the money. If I'm back in the area, I'll make their campground my home base again. Highly recommend.

We had such a good time camping at this spot! Jaq is an amazing host- she made us feel super welcome and her pup is the cutest!! The campsite was very well maintained with a nice deck to pitch the tent on. All the amenities we could have needed were available, including a porta-potty and small hand wash station. Jaq did a great job of giving us our space while also being available to help with whatever we needed- she brought firewood to us both nights we were there, and gave us great recommendations on places to grab a bite, hiking trails, and fishing spots. I caught a beautiful rainbow trout right in front of our campsite. Rico is super cute too and and just a couple minutes up the road. This is a special place and we’re looking forward to visiting again!

Jaq has the most beautiful property to spend a holiday weekend getaway. She made sure we had all that we needed when we got there. The area is so serene and beautiful. The river is right next next to our camp, what peace it brings. Only thing I'd complain about is the short amount of time we stayed. I could definitely stay a few more days to explore and live in such a peaceful serenity. We will definitely come back and stay longer. Thank you for you hospitality Jaq!!!

Really nice host and very accommodating. Site was along the river, peaceful and quiet. It appears they are renovating the camping sites a bit or adding to it. Keep in mind this was the only camp site (that we stayed at on our 10 day trip) that does not provide fire wood, you do have to purchase it from the host. Port-o-potty at our side for all campers to use, so maybe suggest staying further from that so you don't hear the door at night. The site is just outside of the small town of Rico. Highly suggest stopping by the adorbale coffee shop in town! Super good coffee, really sweet owner and cute merch!

Site 1: Jaq was incredible! Checked in to make sure we didn’t need any additional supplies and provided what we did need. This site is secluded and further from the rest of the property. The river is beautiful, running right by camp. Bathroom and picnic table are communal, so a little bit away to be used regularly. Location is wonderful- small town Rico has a great coffee shop for mornings, close to Telluride, Canyons of the Ancients and Mesa Verde NP. Definitely check it out

It was really pleasant to be at the beautiful campsite and the river sounds were so soothing. Jaq was friendly and had water and firewood available. Rico is a short, nice walk away. Our group of 5 felt very comfortable and enjoyed it here. Definitely double check the location description because my experience with google maps put it in the wrong spot ( it is South of Rico)

We had the best time camping in Rico! Jaq was so kind and helpful! We enjoyed getting to know her. The campsite was secluded and spacious but still close to town. We can not recommend this spot enough. We can’t wait to come back and enjoy the unique area and all that it has offer.

Overall I had a great experience. I am a newbie to HipCamp and didn't realize that the listings aren't always accurate. I have a teardrop trailer and I thought I was reserving space for my camper. However, Lazy Rooster Ranch isn't licensed for campers, just tents. The location is beautifully set next to the Delores River and Jaq had an open cabin (an A-frame with a queen) so I stayed there. Learned that I must confirm all reservations made through this site with a full confirmation phone call.

I loved the land with the Dolores river running through it. There is a nice trail along the river that takes you into Rico. We had lunch and drinks at the local pub along with our dog. A nice, peaceful place to land for a few days.

Jaq’s spot is super cool! Absolutely recommend. I had site 2 which looked into the valley and oversaw the river, it was spectacular. Jaq’s hospitality is unrivaled. She went above and beyond to make sure everything went well. Clean bathroom, firewood and ice for sale, dumpster, and incredible views.

My family loved camping on Jaq’s land! Such a little secluded spot- even though there were other campers there (we didn’t see or hear them the entire weekend). She was such a sweet host and her little pup was the cutest. So close to the river, with great access to it and the hike along the river was really nice. We will definitely be back again!

We loved this experience. Rico is a hidden gem and this property was situated right on the river and a miles walk to town. It had all the basics including a propane fire. Would absolutely come back!
