Grub CSA Farm

Grub CSA Farm was a great place to stay in Chico. It was easy to get in and out of town by bike. It also felt secluded and safe. You’re still in a neighborhood, so there is farm, neighborhood noise, and wildlife noise. The directions to the campsite were incorrect and it took us about 15 min of driving around in circles to find the Hipcamp. There’s a sign off of Dairy that indicates Hipcamp, and not off of West Sacramento like the host provided directions say. Half of our picnic table was sitting in star thistle which was quite annoying to navigate around. Overall, would stay here again when in Chico.

Way too expensive for what you get. It didn't look as nice as on the pictures. Instructions to the campground were confusing. We ended up in the wrong orchard. The shade of the trees was nice though. There wasn't a box of vegetables as was promised. When we complained about that, we got vegetables after all. The toilet was overtaken by big spiders, and the sink on the campground was dirty. I would never go back here.

Freshly picked berries!

Simple camping, but sweet camping. Very convenient…close to Chico center, but quiet and private. Clean porta-potty, sink with water, and a picnic table. Other campsite pretty close but neighbors just parked/camped on other side of a tree, which provided a screen. Owner/farmer very friendly and shared some fresh picked strawberries with us. Fell asleep to the sound of owl hoots. All around a great experience!

What a great farm just outside of town. Very quiet with an abundance of shade under the walnut trees. Camp spots are away from the home and very private. Will be booking here again as we will be back in the area for ten days. Super nice host, with clear communication!

Peaceful orchard camping near town

Very pleasant one-night stay in a walnut grove. The host came outside to help me find the location when I drove by lost the second time, and was very friendly and helpful. Sink and picnic table were nice to have. Didn't use the porta potty, but also convenient to have. Host said I may hear foxes and horned owls a night. It was pretty quiet, with only occasional distant car noises. As with many HipCamps, for a solo camper the price is a bit high, but would be a good deal with a larger group. This is a nice spot because it's a real orchard environment, but close to town. Plan to stay here again when in town for RC races at Amain Hobbies, which is only 15 minutes away.

I totally agree with a prior negative review...with minimum effort, this could be a lovely site. In addition to the points raised by Mary Ann's review, what really killed it for me was the smell of cat urine. Don't know if it was the owners' cat I saw running around, it doesn't matter. Just so sad.

Black widows in the porto?

Getting to the toilet was quite a trek, and it's got a family of black widow spiders you have to share the space with. But besides that the place was good!

Such a quaint little spot. Not too far from the host home, but also far enough that you feel alone. The picnic tables and swing is a nice touch. Plenty of flat grassy space for tents and a bit of recreation. I would absolutely go again.

This site has so much potential and the hosts seem like lovely folks, but for $50, I could stay in a state park that would be so much better maintained. The fire pit here looked a hundred years old; there were the remains of fires made right on the ground that had never been cleaned up. The very useful sinks were full of mud and leaves. The folder on the table with info had been left out in the elements for who knows how long, pages were water damaged, some completely wiped out. The toilet is a port a potty on the other side of the farm. All of that could be corrected with minimal effort - we didn't need the sink or the fire pit. The point for me was that this site wasn't "hosted". For $50 it was a spot on a dirt track. If even minimal care had been taken or some preparations made, it would have felt completely different. I don't need or want luxury but a Hipcamp spot should be more than a place to park. The hosts did give us a wonderful box of produce and nuts that we appreciated.

Big rig friendly: 3 (provided you make the right choices, needs maintenance - shrubs/trees encroaching on space). Customer service (response time, etc.): 5 Site instructions: 2 (instructions on HipCamp site stray from actual HipCamp signs); unclear where site 1 is or site 2. Unclear where to park. Features (nice touches): 1 (LOTS of Puncturevine / goat heads on the ground/attaching to soles of shoes - painful to step on; decrepit fire pit (full of ashes, leaning over); ropes on swing seemed frayed…) Noise: 5 (None!) Cell reception: 5 View / aesthetics: 5 (nice sunshine over the fields, walnuts to gather/eat) Value for money: 1 (feels expensive for what you get) Rating: 3.375, rounding down to 3 due to value for money. If the price was 30 bucks, we wouldn’t be as critical.

Beautiful working farm!

Wow. I was in awe of the amount of different vegetables, fruits and trees on this farm. It was incredible to stay and be a part of it for even just a night. The camping spaces are very flat and spacious. Justine was responsive and accommodating. I would love to stay here again!

Beautiful property+ private space. You cannot get this experience at your standard campground. Our 4 kids loved the swing+ being able to roam amidst the hearty walnut trees. We loved the water station feature+ felt very welcomed by Lee+ Francine on their working farm! Veggies were an added (delicious) bonus.

This place was horrible fire ants and flies wouldn't leave u alone the bathroom was not being maintained the Vinyard worker would drive by and dust us out we had o pack up kids and drive to use the bathroom only one fire pit to share we will not b going back

Camping in Our Pop Up Tent Trailer!

We enjoyed camping at the Grub Farm in the Walnut Grove. It was very private and close to downtown Chico. We had a little trouble finding where to turn in, the signs were small and the hipcamp site directions conflicted with the signs posted. We were able to get directions clarified through texting the owner. Francine came out with a bag of organic veggies for us on our last day. The evening river breeze was great. We will definitely be visiting again.

Only two sites on the farm made it feel a world away from the big city! Only stayed one night traveling through, but was easy to find and quiet. Francine’s boys came to greet us on their way to pick strawberries and delivered walnuts and carrots. Felt like a very homey farm stay!

Beautiful campsite and very friendly owners! Nice and quiet, beautiful sunset in the middle of the orchard. Nice pit to make a fire. However, we did feel it was a bit expensive for the amenities that were offered. The toilet was a porta-potty and quite far from the sites, no chairs around the fire pit, no light or any decorations. Unfortunately we missed the owner a few times so missed our box with veggies. Recommended if you have enough stuff to make yourself comfortable!
