In 2013, I left a corporate career in search of something more meaningful. Yearning to connect consumers back to their farmers, I started Autonomy Farms in my hometown of Bakersfield. We are stewards of our land and practice non-GMO farming. Our chickens and turkeys are free-range, pasture raised and these practices are led by our deeply held beliefs that regenerative farming is the future. CAMPING UNDER THE STARS Cozy up in one of our host-provided, unfurnished canvas wall tents, or our single BYO tent/RV camp site. Our farm glamping experience offers a no-fuss stay on a real working farm approximately 30 miles outside Bakersfield. 20 acres surround you, bounded by the Tehachapi Mountains and within the San Joaquin Valley. Sites are perched on the edge of the pond, where frogs sing lullabies into the evening hours. Each site offers a good amount of shade for a portion of the day and has its own picnic table, water spigot and fire pit. Campers provide firewood. There is one shared, plumbed bathroom between campsites and one shared outdoor shower. There's no electricity at your rustic home away from home, but the evening stars light up the sky. OUR FARM Our goal is to reconnect the consumer to the farmer - the source of their food. By fostering direct relationships via CSA, farmer's markets and a strong presence in the community, we aim to ensure consumers have a vested interest in not only their food, but the health and environment in which their food was raised. We respect nature and strive to be good stewards of our land, raising our chickens and turkeys on pasture, supplemented only when necessary with non-GMO feed.

20 Acre Farm & Swim Hole: BYO Site
Overall, my family of 3 (including a toddler) had a great experience! The pond was everything that I had hoped, spacious and relatively clean with tons of mosquito fish. It refreshed us, as we experienced high humidity and gusty winds (effects of a hurricane occurring elsewhere?). We also got lucky as there were no other campers for most of stay, so that we had the well-working onsite toilet and shower to ourselves. The lawn lights added a nice nighttime ambience. Checking in/out was relaxed, and host Meredith was responsive via text with guiding us about the use of the lights when setting up after dark. We were greeted pleasantly by two calm farm dogs, who kept us company throughout our stay. However, there were lots of insects, e.g. mosquitos and flies, on our site. While it is understandable given that we were on farm property and near a pond (during summer), and the farm appears to operate on an organic, non-pesticide basis, the bugs might be too much for some people. Long sleeves and/or natural bug spray and medicated oilments are a must. The wood table and benches could be replaced and/or checked for any spider/cockroach nests. Also, the farm appears to be operating even on weekends, so there is the occasional sound of cars driving on the dirt road next to the campsite, and epic verbal battles of roosters, coyotes, and dogs, in the early morning. Despite these issues, this place had everything we needed for our weekend getaway!

The camp spot was peaceful, easy to find and the best is that my kids really liked it- which says a lot! Meredith was easy to communicate with and very friendly. She made it a point to come out in the morning before we left, so we could meet her. Lovely spot and friendly people. Thank you!
