The best camping near Harding Lake State Recreation Area guide

Overview

About

A mere 45 miles south of Fairbanks, you’ll find a time-tested Alaskan State Park facility—the Harding Lake State Recreation Area. This gem has been around since 1967 (well, technically it’s been around for much longer, but it was established in the ‘60s). There are more than 90 campsites here, so you’ll have plenty of wonderful options for a night under the stars. Hiking is popular, but the main draw has gotta be the water. A boat launch makes it easy to get those canoes, jet skis, speed boats, and other watercraft into the lake so that you can enjoy all that the lake has to offer.

When to go

The ideal time to visit Harding Lake State Recreation Area is during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is warm and the days are long. Winter can be harsh and challenging, with limited access and frigid temperatures, making it less suitable for outdoor activities.

Know before you go

  • Check weather conditions before your visit, as Alaska's climate can be unpredictable.
  • Be prepared for wildlife encounters and know how to safely observe animals from a distance.
  • Ensure you have the necessary permits for fishing or other regulated activities.
  • Accessibility may vary across different areas of the park; inquire ahead for specific needs.
  • Remember to pack out all trash and leave no trace to preserve the park's natural beauty.
