This 46-acre horse ranch is located in the Whaleyville township of Suffolk. We are off of Highway 13, five miles from North Carolina state line. The 46 acres include 15 acres of pasture that host horse and sheep, and 31 acres of surrounding woods for hiking, camping, horseback riding and ATVs. Solitude at Thornton Farm


Peace and quiet equals “Solitude at my farm. I’m just like you. I want to camp at a quiet place in the country where it’s plenty of acres and no houses to look at and a clean bathroom and shower. Well it’s here. I’m Located in Wakefield Virginia. If you’re traveling to Virginia Beach I’m one hour away. From my farm there is a free ferry in Scotland where the ferry departs to Williamsburg just 30 minutes. At my farm I have 5 sites for tent/camping so it’s spaced appropriately apart I have 2 Rv sites totally away for their privacy and a new mini house also properly spaced away. All have a clean picnic table and a fire pit. 100 feet away you’ll find that clean bathroom, shower and a wash station for hygiene. You’ll see the love I put into this and because I love it and my prior guests love it, which means it may be right for you also. In the town of Wakefield you’ll find gas stations, dollar stores, a Value food market and if you want (to go) food we have that also. Plus it’s home to The Virginia Diner. Amenities include toilet access, a shower, trash disposal, picnic tables, and potable water. Pets are allowed, as are campfires.

One of our favorite games is Jenga, so when we saw jumbo jenga, we had to play a couple of rounds!! 

With so many acres of land, it was easy to walk one way and find a trail to head down to explore.  The weather was immaculate and we even found a nice stream to check out. 

Marvin set up this quaint area in the woods, away from the cabin for guests to enjoy some solitude and shade.  We had fun playing checkers and hanging out in the trees. 

This is one of Marvin's camp sites tucked into the woods! The perfect set up with a firepit to enjoy. 

I spent my morning snuggled up in a blanket with a book at one of the many fire pits on site.  It was so peaceful outside!

Sunset was incredible.  I also woke up for sunrise and it was a gorgeous sight to see over the acres of land with no obstructions. 

Our wonderful host, Marvin - he built everything on this property by himself! He was so kind and welcoming during our stay. We definitely want to come back!

This was the view I had from the bench-swing in front of the tiny cabin. All ready to enjoy a warm fire on cold night - clear skies galore and beautiful stars later that evening!

**Please note: If you choose to bring your furry friends along (maximum of 2) You will need to go to EXTRAS to add in the number of pets and submit the Pet Fee along with your booking.  We allow a maximum of two pets at a rate of $25 per pet/per stay.  You will need to go to EXTRAS to add in any Pets prior to booking.** 

Pet Rules:

1. There is a maximum of 2 pets allowed. There is a $25 fee per pet.

2. All pets must be leashed and under control whenever outside unit. Pick up and dispose of all pet waste in trash can outside of unit.

3. The area around the barn and animal paddocks are off limits when walking with pets.

4. Pets are allowed in the front of the property and on the trails. Please avoid the area around our chicken coup, barn and children’s swings/play area.

5. Pets are not allowed to be left unattended inside the unit.

Come stay on our bucolic 1700's Tobacco Estate. Our estate offers the convenience of rental accommodations with an element of history and adventure! Our peaceful country oasis is the perfect romantic getaway for an escape from city life. Wake up to the serene sounds of nature and have coffee under hundred year old oaks. Hike the trails on our property, visit with our animals or head out vineyard hopping at a few local wineries. We are a short drive from interstate 95 and 85.

The space

**Our cottage offers sleeping accommodations in the form of 1 queen sized pull out sofa bed in the living room, Queen sized bed in the bedroom and a twin pull out sofa bed in the bedroom with room for a pack n play if needed.  Please let us know if you require use of either sofa bed so that we can have appropriate linens ready for you.  Thank you!**

Our Historic expansive 30+ acre property offers pastoral views and sounds of farm life with two accommodations (check out our bungalow). The cottage has one bedroom with a queen sized bed and freshly clean sheets, full bathroom, tiled walk-in shower, kitchen with refrigerator, stove top oven, microwave, coffee maker, hot water kettle, blender, toaster, and four complete setting of plates glasses, cups and silver flatware, and all cooking utensils and pots and pans. Dish soap is provided. Nicely furnished with queen size pull-out sofa, four seat cafe-style dining table. Ceiling fans in every room. Great natural lighting in every room as well as french doors throughout. The expansive front porch has two ceiling fans and wicker furniture for sitting.

The Property:

Miles of walking trails in the back with creeks that run adjacent to our mineral springs throughout our property. Say hello to our animals-We are home to many exotic chickens, ducks, Pygmy goats, dairy goats, mini pigs, horses and many Great Pyrenees.

Guest access:

Free parking right beside the unit. If you need boat, RV or Trailer parking there is space for that as well.

Please note: check in time is 3pm, check out time is 10am.

We do not offer early check in or late check out.

We have Starlink WIFI. If you require consistent internet access -please be aware-our internet can be spotty/dependent upon weather conditions that are outside of our control-we are in a rural area and we love it! However, it may not be for everyone. If you require constant connection to the internet our place is not for you. There is a plaque on the bedside table where the server name and password are written.

The thermostat is located behind the bedroom door. It’s a normal, modern Carrier HVAC unit installed Oct. 2022; it’s easy to adjust temperature up or down using the two arrow buttons. If you have any trouble finding it or operating it please contact us!

We will leave the place unlocked with the lights on. Please enjoy your stay!
