Red rock cliffs and fish-filled waters at Flaming Gorge create the best of lake camping.
The allure of Flaming Gorge Reservoir and its red rock cliffs attracts lake campers to this spectacular Utah-Wyoming site. Named by explorer John Wesley Powell in 1869, Flaming Gorge is a 91-foot-long reservoir surrounded by Ashley National Forest and its stratified cliffs, untouched hills, and brush-filled canyons. The reservoir’s waters teem with fish, especially trout and salmon, and non-permitted fishing is available year-round. Flaming Gorge is also renowned for other outdoor activities like water skiing, jet skiing, canoeing, kayaking, rafting, and parasailing. Campers can set up along the water in the campgrounds and RV parks to view golden eagles and pronghorn antelope. Some of the gorge’s campgrounds even feature amenities like ice cream shops, showers, and camping supplies. For a more rustic experience, Ashley National Forest also offers dispersed backcountry camping away from popular developed areas.
