When you go to sleep, there's no light except the moon and stars, no refrigerator or central heating or air conditioning noise -- only the sounds of nature -- the stream, crickets or frogs in the nearby pond, dogs or coyotes in the distance. Without the glow of a nearby city, the hot tub on a clear night, the skies are dazzling. Speaking of which, the wood-fired hot tub is made by a company called Snorkel. It's perfect for 2 and can fit 3, although tight. It's Japanese style hot tub bathing, meaning no chemicals. Also, since we're not grid tied, it relies on a firebox heating fresh spring water, which you fill it with. It takes approx. 35 minutes to fill the tub and between 3 and 3.5 hours to heat (longer when it's really cold!). There's a thermometer in it, so as it gets closer to your liking (don't let it get over 102 degrees), let the existing logs burn down, choke off the air vent sleeve and hop in. With no pump sounds and the stars above, it's incomparable. The $50 fee (per 2 night rentals) covers thorough cleaning between guests and split firewood. You will be very comfortable in Little Good Egg, even in extreme weather, simply by paying attention and taking more time for simple tasks. It sounds corny, but there is a meditative quality to thinking and doing things like heating water, keeping warm, staying hydrated, eating well and choosing to do what you really want. I'm always amazed how busy I am -- and how different this kind of busy feels -- without electronics and my technological "time savers." Odd as it sounds to say this, it's stunning and wonderful to go "offline," even for just a day, and not get hit by little chirps and incoming messages that seem to arrive now 24/7. Note: Since we opened in October, 2014, guest reviews consistently tell us us best thing about staying at Good Egg is being off the grid and the treadmill of modern life, unplugging from the dominant culture and experiencing oneself as humans did 100 years ago and more. Whether it’s the absence of electricity (in the cabin), the quiet of the country, no city glow in the night sky, or the once common experience of the natural world dominating over human-made or human-crafted things, it’s astonishing for many of us to see and feel and experience without constant communications via text and email and the distractions of modern life. Many people write that they’ve learned an enormous amount about themselves, about homesteading or permaculture, and about alternate ways of being. We just retired from Active Duty Air Force! My ancestors have owned the land our NC cabins sit on since 1836. In fact, my mother grew up there after my Grandfather returned from WWII when there was no electricity and the outhouse was a bench over the creek. I grew up hiking the mountains with my brothers and our BB guns and my Uncle Frank at our family reunions. In 2005 he deeded us a parcel of land and we built our first cabin - Smawlie. We love to come to the cabin and Hike the trails on our own property, and of course, the world famous ones that join them, namely the Bartram and the Appalachian Trails. As you explore the lake, the trails, the rivers, and the mountain roads you'll see why our ancestors settled here. In 2018 - we bought the remainder of Uncle Frank's land - and in his honor built our second cabin - Frank's Landing. Also in that year I started managing my brother Bill's cabin. When we were stationed in Alaska for 6 heavenly years - we purchased a remote parcel of property and have slowly begun to develop it. We just completed building our cabin there. If I could rate this 6 stars I would! The place was so clean! I usually have dust allergy issues every place I go, but I had zero issues here. The set up of the cabin was perfect for two families, there were nice little thoughtful touches, and the customer service was fantastic. Response times were so fast so we didn't have to stress about anything at all.

Excellent. 10/10. The house is clean and very well maintained. It’s super cozy. Hot tub worked great, blankets available for hanging outside. Stocked kitchen. Plenty of towels. Right on the water on fairly flat land. Had everything we needed. Will definitely stay again. Host is friendly and super responsive. Can’t wait to visit again as Franklin is an excellent place for a short vacation. Great places to eat and shopping within a short distance. My only complaint is that the beds are small, hard to tell if they were fulls or queens. No King bed (which is what I’m used to). Also no full-length mirrors. But otherwise, we loved it and will definitely be back.

Amazing little cabin! Very clean and well thought out design. My son and I stayed for the weekend and loved the rushing creek right from the huge back covered patio. We also really enjoyed the clean hot tub. There was plenty of seclusion and privacy even with renters in the treehouse next door. We will definitely stay here again!

We rented this cabin for a family trip to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The location was great as it was a 30 minute drive to the park entrance which is short enough to be convenient but far enough to be out of the chaos. The cabin was clean and comfortable. It’s a little closer to the road than I’d prefer (you can’t see the road but you can hear it), but when we had the gentle hum of the hot tub or a fan then the road noise disappeared. Also, I was able to do some mountain biking at Tsali and the trailhead is less than 15 minutes away from this cabin, which was fantastic!

The charming little cabin is just the right size for a couple or small family. Unbeatable year round views from that hot tub, I mean. You can’t beat it. This what such a delightful spot! Very cozy, well equipped, and beautiful. The wood stove kept me plenty warm on the chillier nights. The hot tub was super luxurious. The little egg has everything you could want from a little WNC cabin retreat. Also the wifi was a great bonus!

Weekend Trip to Good Egg Tiny Home & Remodeled Barn

This is an incredibly unique property and a wonderful place to get away and enjoy the mountains. It feels very secluded, set on 30 acres of land deep in Madison County, and being off-grid adds to the sense of being able to really escape and relax. The barn and cabin are both really neat structures, and Don has clearly spent a lot of time and effort into making this a one-of-a-kind place. The barn has a spacious living area, with a full kitchen, heating, and other amenities, and a huge deck for cooking and entertaining. The cabin is a cozy retreat that is well supplied and has a great wood furnace for colder nights. There is lots to see on the farm with a whole trail system and various gardens and other features. And the rushing stream going across the property really completes the perfect setting. There is fast wifi available if needed, and Don is very helpful and easy to get a hold of.
