This is a rural countryside property located east of Ruidoso, New Mexico, along US Highway 70 at approximately 6,000 feet elevation. The setting is open and quiet, designed for guests seeking space, fresh air, and a non-city environment. The property is gated and elk-fenced, allowing free-range chickens to roam while keeping larger predators out. A friendly working pack of four female Australian Kelpie mix dogs also roam the property. Night skies are exceptionally dark with minimal light interference, making stargazing a highlight. The north boundary adjoins the Lincoln National Forest, providing direct access for hiking and mountain biking, including e-bikes. No motorized vehicles are permitted in the forest. Additional walking and biking trails are located within the fenced property. There are six rentals on the property, and the host lives on-site. Four rentals are glamping-style accommodations, and two are residential homes, including the uniquely styled Hippie HiltInn. The property is nearly half a mile deep, allowing space and separation between rentals. A large gazebo on a hill offers panoramic views of the Ruidoso Valley and night skies. Because the property fronts US Highway 70, some traffic noise may be present at times; sound levels vary depending on rental location. Amenities include a free 18-hole pasture golf course with clubs and balls provided, walking and biking trails, and access to extensive National Forest trail systems. Campfires are allowed at designated fire rings at each rental except during county burn bans or red-flag conditions. Each rental includes a BBQ grill, and a shared cabana offers a propane BBQ, propane flat grill, and large charcoal grill. An outdoor shared restroom with a cold-water sink and toilet is available for added convenience. Hammocks are provided at all glamping rentals, and water features are located throughout the property. This is a quiet, respectful environment intended for guests who value nature, space, and outdoor access.

Larry is a wonderful host and his camping spot is beautiful! Convenient location that was shockingly quiet. The quarry trucks that Larry mentions in the description did start to go by around 6:30am, but we were camping on a weeknight and were grateful for the heads up. Overnight when it counts, all we could hear were distant coyotes. Highly recommend!! Thanks, Larry!

We had such a wonderful stay at Camp Rio! The river is gorgeous. The bath house was spotless and warm, and the hot shower felt heavenly after a day outdoors. The camp hosts were incredibly friendly and helpful, and the pavilion facilities were great. We’re already looking forward to coming back—next time to rent a cabin! Thank you for such a great stay.

Chef Udo’s property was a wonderful experience. The setting is peaceful and welcoming, and the food is absolutely delicious. Every meal is prepared with care and incredible flavor—you can really feel the passion behind it. We had the brisket nachos, brine chicken, chocolate cake, and cookies. A truly memorable stay and a must-visit for anyone who loves great food and warm hospitality. Chef Udo was genuinely happy to make sure everyone has a good time. He let us play with his glow in the dark bocce ball set, while waiting for dinner.

My stay at the smokehouse was genuinely a once in a lifetime experience. Chef-Üdø was SO accommodating, communicative and welcoming; the property felt well cared for and safe. And his food was absolutely unreal…where else can you have a world class steak dinner (followed by a warm cookie) underneath the stars?! I will remember this night for a long time!!

Camping on Chef's property was a unique experience. As you might expect, he is a great cook, and it is rare to have a hot meal served to you when camping. It can be a bit of a challenge to coordinate the timing if you don't know when you might be getting into camp, but things worked out OK. He is a knowledgeable host with a clear passion for the outdoors. There are no regular camp sites in white sands NP, so this is about as close as you can get and there are other recreational possibilities in the nearby mountains. Chef has great plans for improvements to his site, such as a shower building, and he has a glamping tent available, but for now I had to make do with a shared table in contrast to other hosts that tend to offer individual picnic tables. There is a bathroom tent, but fires were not permitted when I was there. Much of the camping area is bare dirt. When I was there in winter the weather was mild with some wind, but I am told it can be more windy at times. Noise is a concern, there is noise from the road although it will die down late at night, noise from trains, and noise from roosters owned by nearby neighbors. On the positive note, I was able to observe a rare missile test at night with an interesting exhaust tail. Bringing ear plugs may help.

Camp Rio was awesome! The staff were so welcoming and were happy to share great information about the area to make our stay great. It was wonderful to wake up each morning to the wildlife, and the peaceful river right in front of us. The bathrooms there were fantastic! Overall, it was a great experience, and we are so thankful we found this place for a get away into nature for the New Year!

Fabulous. Super cozy, has everything you need. Neighbors totally get the chill vibe — no noise, no drama. Really private, clean, well-equipped, and just 20 minutes out on a smooth road to the nearest town. Views are insane. 10/10 would stay again.
