Straight down to the coast is a beautiful black and green sand beach and a huge tide pool. Rent a four-wheel-drive to get there. You don’t need a 4WD to get to our place, but you will need a SUV or truck. Go slow the road is bumpy and rough in places. We are 1.2 miles from the highway. Off the grid. Rustic, but fun. If you are a Eco tourist or seeking adventure, you will love our spot! The silence is golden and the stars are amazing. Don't expect a hotel...this is upcountry glamorous camping. Shared bathroom (see photos) about a 100 feet away. Hipcamp kitchenette includes a propane single burner, ice chest, No fridge. No oven. We have an outdoor fire pit, if you like campfires! It's one-of-a-kind! Most of the parcels are 20 acre parcels around… But a few smaller parcels across the road. We have nice neighbors who keep an eye on things. The nearest grocery store is about 3 miles away. The Hele-On Bus is just 1.2 miles up the road. If you want to drive to the green sand beach at the end of our road, rent a 4 wheel drive. If you are athletic, you can walk, but it is 4 miles down and 4 miles back. I recommend going early in the morning and take water. Hot water shower is propane. Bring ice for your ice chest. Bring drinking water. There is plenty of coffee and tea in the kitchenette. Boil hot water in the kettle, put cone filter with a paper filter and ground coffee inside and on top of thermos. Drip. It's delicious! This is off the grid solar and there can be days without sun, or other glitches. No wifi. I use ATandT and I understand that Verizon and Tmobile work also The panoramic ocean view is spectacular! Very peaceful and relaxing! The back 15 acres is an old Ohia forest with 500 year old trees and lots of birds. You might even see a wild goat or a wild pig. There are small caves and gorgeous rock formations. It backs up to Manuka Forest Reserve. We have beautiful furnished cabins with beds, so you don't have to pitch a tent. Pillows, blankets, fresh towels provided.

The Kikala river runs through the middle of the bioreserve, so Kikala Waterfall Lodge guests on the bioreserve have private exclusive access to prime waterfalls and swimming holes. The Cloudforest bioreserve isn't just home to botanical wonders, Hawaiian native hawks and many other beautiful Hawaiian birds like to nest in the cloudforest. We enjoyed our stay at the Tranquil Duck. It was nice and cool, which was great after a hot day. The shower was nice and we enjoyed coffee with the ducks and pea fowl. They were so cute! Very comfortable and a nice stay close to volcano national park and Hilo. We would love to come back!

2 nights at Gingerhill Farm Retreat

I loved staying in the Jungle Canopy! It was incredible to hear the birds in the morning when making coffee, and hear the frogs sing at night. The bed was super comfy and it was awesome to have my own bathroom with the cool outdoor shower (with hot water!!). The Canopy is a short walk from the parking area so it’s easy to bring your bag up, just don’t forget to bring some bug repellent for the mosquitos, and don’t forget to go say hi to the goats and chickens down in the garden! This place is a true delight and I’m excited to come back one day.

Weekend Trip to The Tranquil Homestead

We loved Christopher and Esther's little homestead! The location was perfect: secluded and serene, but close enough to Hilo and Volcano. The ducks and peafowl absolutely made the trip. It brought us so much joy seeing them all waddle down to our spot to greet us, even if all they wanted was for us to feed them duck food! The place was clean, the kitchen was well stocked, and the hosts were super helpful and friendly. Will definitely be booking this again!

1 night at Skyes Treehouses

This treehouse was a magical jungle DREAM! There are windows everywhere, allowing tons of natural light in as well as lovely views of the forest/greenery all around. If you want to sleep in, bring an eye mask because the bedroom is at the top of the treehouse and gets bright early (wasn’t a problem for us because we were getting up early anyway so waking up naturally to the morning light was nice). At night the frogs are loud but we enjoyed falling asleep to them. Everything about the bed is AMAZING—the mattress, pillows, and bedding are all wonderful. The vibe of the treehouse is so cozy and peaceful. We wish we could’ve stayed more than one night. It is a bit expensive but once you get there, you’ll see why. Absolutely book this place. (The ONLY issue we had was initially finding the place. The directions say to look for a gazebo but there is definitely no gazebo. There’s a little carport out front but since we were looking for a gazebo we didn’t think we were art the right place.)

6 nights at Cozy jungle 2-Bedroom Cabin

I loved the private location, the mesmerizing sound of the Koki frogs, the wild pigs and piglets, roosters, pheasants and chickens. The resident cats and dog were sweet and Christophe and Bonnie were just lovely people. We rented Scooters and visited many shoreline access points, and the recommendations for places to eat and check out were on point! Reading in the hammock and the hanging pod were favourites of ours, it was such a great home base for our Adventuring.

Thomas’ land/cottage is the perfect place for a remote, comfortable night close to Volcano National Park. He is a very gracious host and willing to assist you in any way necessary. I definitely would recommend this to anyone looking for a cheap, yet comfortable place to stay.

We stayed here for two nights with my wife. Even beyond what the reviews and photos show, Christopher & Esther were truly wonderful hosts, and The Tropical Duck is a beautiful place filled with charming animals. If you’ve found this place, I highly recommend staying here. The cabin had everything we needed, and everything was clean and very comfortable. We also tried the optional duck eggs for the first time—they were very large and delicious. Feeding the ducks, seeing peacocks up close, and spending time comfortably surrounded by Hawaii’s great nature was an unforgettable experience. Most of all, it made me so happy that my wife said she wished we could have stayed longer and that she wants to come back again. Next time we visit Hawaii, we’ll definitely return with our family and children. Thank you so much, Christopher & Esther!

This was absolutely the MOST BEAUTIFUL and whimsical vacation rental my wife and I have ever had. I am a treehouse aficionado and builder and I really appreciated the totally private setting, the sturdy construction that integrated perfectly with the natural environment and natural ohi’a trunks, the huge French doors and screens on 3 sides of the house, the multiple decks which stayed dry even during downpours, the comfortable bed, and the kitchy artwork. It would have been helpful to have written instructions on how to use the hot water system, how to operate the ceiling fan, how to start the propane heater, and how to light the wood stove and where to find more wood. The kitchen equipment was rudimentary, but serviceable. Some staple spices and herbs and more utensils would have made using the kitchen for simple meal prep easier. While we had guidebooks to help our sightseeing and eating out, some current, local recommendations would have been helpful. That said, we had a WONDERFUL stay, and would return in a heartbeat.

Probably the best hip camp we've stayed at yet, I could literally live out of this little cabin. The property is beautiful, the ducks and peacocks were so cute and the hosts Ester and Christopher were very kind. The only thing I'd change is that I wish we booked more nights here.

Gingerhill Farm Retreat was the most amazing and perfect authentic, raw and true experience! Sylvia met me at my car and guided me up the grassy path past the goats and chickens to show me the delightful facilities, the outdoor shower so delicious, the community kitchen with the am8’g view of the Pacific, and the simple sleep accommodation in the yurt! I fely at all times I was there as if I was sunk into the lush paradise that surrounded me. I will return if ever I am able and stay as long as I possibly can!

The tree frog serenade must be heard to be believed. If you're looking for an inexpensive and beautiful place to stay near Volcanoes, Yip Camp is great -- has a marine toilet, an enclosed shower with hot water, and Thomas keeps fresh batteries in numerous lanterns for you to use. They're in the middle of a fern and 'ohia tree forest. Thomas and Yip the dog are friendly and courteous. Don't be put off by the drive on a dirt road -- there are plenty of those in Big Island upcountry!

This is a special place, accessible, private and well maintained. The yip cottage with a hot shower is fun and well appointed. Even with other campers on site there was plenty of room and privacy. The cool night temperatures made it restful. Mahalo, Tom for the great conversations and hosting. I enjoyed the stay!
