While is isn't 100% private as the host lives next door, we can still promise a peaceful escape from the everyday world. We recommend stopping for snacks in Hilo or Keaau on the way up as those towns have more options than the sleepy Volcano Village.
Important Considerations Before Booking:
As luxurious and adventurous as Inn a Volcano is, staying in an off-grid volcano dome home in the Hawaiian jungle comes with expected 'challenges.' My goal is to give you an experience that combines Tarzan's hideout with a 5-star experience so lets get you prepped!

•The tap water comes from rain catchment. It is not potable (not for drinking.) We will provide drinking water.
2. Electricity
•We're solar-powered, so please conserve energy. High voltage items like hair dryers or irons are not provided. If you bring these and use them there is a chance that the power will shut off. Please shut off lights when you leave. The windows and a skylight allows ample natural light during the day.
3. Weather
•We are located on the rainy side of the Big Island so be prepared for wet weather. Enjoy the pitter patter of rain like a playlist. Let it relax you, and don't let it dampen your plans.

Located on the 1983 lava flow field. There are uneven surfaces that require careful attention but is safe for the adventurous and fit. No annoying croaking frogs and no mosquitos makes this sea level location with blue water ocean views and trade wind breezes a perfect paradise with very little rain and lots of sunshine. There a 10' x 12' raised deck gazebo with a picnic table and ample surfaces for exercising and stretch yoga. We are a few minutes from the black sand clothing optional beach and clean ocean soaking/swimming and Uncle Robert's Wednesday night music extravaganza. There are refrigerators available and a composting toilet and a hot water shower for conservative water showering as all water must be transported in. Located on the 1983 lava flow field. There are uneven surfaces that require careful attention but is safe for the adventurous and fit. No annoying croaking frogs and no mosquitos makes this sea level location with blue water ocean views and trade wind breezes a perfect paradise with very little rain and lots of sunshine. There a 10' x 12' raised deck gazebo with a picnic table and ample surfaces for exercising and stretch yoga. We are a few minutes from the black sand clothing optional beach and clean ocean soaking/swimming and Uncle Robert's Wednesday night music extravaganza. There are refrigerators available and a composting toilet and a hot water shower for conservative water showering as all water must be transported in. The advantage is very little rain and lots of sunshine makes this location a pleasure with fluffy clouds to look at that don't get you wet!!! 2 furnished small houses and a gazebo with ample parking space and solar charging for electronics. Starlink WiFi is available and will provide connectivity and cell phone links !
Your host Dani aka Gilligan has your best experience in mind and is eager to share local knowledge and fun island facts and insights through decades of island life in all of Polynesia! Yip Camp is easily accessible, located on the big island of Hawaii. This property is just a few miles from Volcano National Park off a cinder forest road. It’s a beautiful place, with chickens and roosters roaming the grounds, very green lush and peaceful. We stayed in the tiny “cottage”. It was exactly what we expected. Rustic, & charming. A dry place to lay our heads after a long day of exploring the island. It has a queen sized bed, a loft with a bed, a table, lanterns, a tabletop burner, pans etc. There is an outdoor toilet and shower with lots of hot water. A table and chairs to sit on outside. There was also a place to have a campfire and a picnic table. Thomas was an excellent host, very friendly and offered ideas of places to visit, explore and dine. Yet he gave us plenty of privacy. He was very easy to get a hold of the day we flew in & returned phone calls promptly. I intended to camp in a tent, but I’m happy I booked the cottage as it rained every day the entire week. Even though it was wet the roads were always accessible. My husband and I had a great experience and would recommend Thomas property Yip Camp to others who were looking for an adventure and a bit of the outdoors and the country over staying in Hilo or Kona.

AMAZING. "Tree houses" are often ill-equipped or just a regular house on stilts. This is a gorgeous, fully-livable, honest-to-god, sways-in-the-wind treehouse in a beautiful, private pocket of Hawaii's iconic rainforest. The kitchen is fully equipped and we made several meals, and hosted four adults comfortably (although two of us slept in a little pocket - it's best set up for two adults and a handful of kiddos). The water pressure is minimal at times, but that didn't cause any real problems, and the walkways, covered porch, massive windows, comfortable seating and beds, etc are all top notch. We travel a lot, and I'm not sure we'll ever top this place.
100/10. Will return!

This is a nice private hideaway type cabin. It is about 15-20 minutes to the main road, so it really does feel away from it all, tropical, and junglely. We really enjoyed the sounds of the insects and frogs at night, and the rain on the roof the night it rained. The beds were quite comfortable, situated in two separate rooms. My friend had the loft room, and she really enjoyed it. (Careful on the stairs/ladder)
The pump toilet down below is a bit of a hassle, but it works fine, and reminds you that you’re roughing it a bit, (a hipcamp after all)
We came up with our own system for nighttime, which you can guess, (regarding bathroom).
We had the place to ourselves for three nights, then neighbors arrived the fourth night. It still felt quite private.
Sona greeted us upon arrival and explained all nuances. Communication was excellent.
We visited Volcanoes National Park two days during our stay. The cabin is conveniently located for that. We found the best nearby coffee at Hilo Coffee Mill a few miles towards Hilo.

Thomas was incredibly accommodating as we booked this cabin last minute so that we could spend more time on the east side of the Big Island without having to drive back to Kona. He was there to greet us in the evening when we arrived after a day at the park, and was there to send us off as we continued on our journey in the morning.
This cabin provides more of a camping feel as the property is off the grid, but you'll find all the essentials such as a full sized bed, linens, warm shower and a toilet. If you're like me and attract mosquitos, bringing a mosquito net may be useful as well.
