The Woods At Sole Farm

1 site · Tent30 acres · Demorest, GA
I recently purchased this property from the estate of Robert Masters, 2013. Mr. Master's and his family lived on this property since 1957 in the small red brick house at the road. He raised chickens and cattle. The cows are the reason this property looks the way it does with it's magnificent trees. I suspect this piece of property has had cattle on it for 100+ years. Mr. Masters worked at the Historic Habersham Mill down the road as did many of the locals. This is a working farm . I have named the farm, Sole Farm. (Sole is Italian for Sun) The house on the hill, my home, is the Villa del Sole. I look forward to having you come and enjoy this beautiful piece of land I call home. Learn more about this land: COVID-19: None of the camp sites are even in sight of one another. The sights are large enough so that you and your fellow campers can social distance from one another. I certainly respect your wishes and will social distance while packing you into your site with the tractor.  You will pull into 495 Habersham Mill Rd, Green Shutter Cottage. There is a gravel drive that goes down behind Green Shutters Cottage. I will pick you up there with the tractor to pack you in and I will pack you out as well. Vehicles are NOT allowed on the property. You WILL get stuck.  A breathtaking view of the distant mountains greets you as you come on to the property as well as the majestic Villa del Sole, a Tuscan style villa on top of the hill, my home. The land drops away into rolling pastures dotted with ancient trees, some 300+!. The woodlands are filled with wildlife that surround the property where you are completely isolated from the world. There are two creeks that border each side of the property and join together and flow into Lake Habersham then into the Soque, the top trophy trout stream in the southeast. The water in these streams is pure. Please respect this and bring Earth friendly soap for washing dishes. I recommend Dr. Bonner's Pure castile soap. There is a creek by each camp site.  Behind the property is 110 acs of woodlands and fields down to Lake Habersham.  The Woodland sites and the Meadow both have streams, fire pits, benches and latrines. I will pack you into and out of your site with the tractor. I do not allow vehicles on the property. You can walked to the sites if you like. I do welcome well behaved dogs. I have two that live here with me, Buster and Rufus.  Depending on where you want to camp there are three possible campsites to choose from: The Meadow, 2 to 24 campers and, The Woodland site, 2 to 8, The Head Waters, 2 to 6 campers.  The Head Waters site is down next to the creek and next to a meadow, very secluded, no latrine. The Meadow is best for larger groups of 8 or more. It is is a medium size meadow with flat ground suitable for spacing a number of tents out. There is a fire pit, grill/grate and three benches. It also has a creek and a latrine. The Woodland site is suitable for 2 to 8 campers but is a bit limited on places to pitch tents. It too has a fire pit, grill/grate, benches, kitchen prep table and a latrine. It is by far the prettiest site right next to the creek. It's possible to sit in the creek in areas during hot weather(shallow water and COLD!. You are not completely disconnected from the world here(WIFI) but far enough away to feel isolated and private. In the bottoms, you are nestled in the woods and can see nothing around you but forest, not even the Villa and not the other campers in the meadow. You see no neighbors, houses, lights, etc. Stargazing from on top of the hill is not to be missed. I recommend Sky Watch app. Clarkesville is close by. Ingles is close by for forgotten supplies or a Starbucks fix. This is a small town, rural area, quiet and slow. There is plenty more to do if you just want Sole Farm camp as a base. Tallulah Gorge is 20 minutes to the north and hiking at Panther Creek. Habersham County does not have liquor except by the drink in restaurants. Beer and wine are sold at Ingles. The closest liquor store is in Mount Airy 25 mins, $10 more a bottle. Many good hiking opps are close by, waterfalls, thrifting. The Chattahoochee is good for canoeing, kayaking and swimming. There are several stables that offer trail rides close by. You are allowed to walk all over the property using the mown paths but please respect the other campers and my privacy. I will be respecting yours.

Flying Pig Animal Sanctuary

6 sites · RVs, Tents10 acres · Cairo, GA
In 2003, we moved onto our 10-acre family property which had previously been a hog farm before my family purchased it when I was a small child. We began in 2014 as a little hobby farm lovingly called Hippie Chick N Farm with a couple pet goats and some chickens for eggs. Within the month we were asked to rescue an infant pot bellied pig, Ollie, knowing nothing about pigs we had to do a lot of research and found there was an incredible need for homes for unwanted pet pigs. A few months later we rescued a female to be Ollie's friend who turned out to be pregnant and had 6 babies on Christmas Eve, Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet & Cupid. Dasher, being the first born and only spotty baby of the litter became Dasher the Flying Pig, the future sanctuary namesake. From then we continued to rescue pigs when contacted and officially gained 501c3 charitable status in 2019 under the name Flying Pig Animal Sanctuary at Hippie Chick N Farm, Inc. We are now home to over 100 beautiful animal friends. This includes pigs, chickens, goats, ducks, dogs, cats, fish, guinea pigs, peafowl, Jordy the Torty, a 100 lb African Sulcata Tortoise and a parrot in a pear tree. We have a small organic garden that we are expanding and we are working to become self sustainable, we compost and recycle and live a kind and compassionate lifestyle. Follow us on social media at Flying Pig Animal Sanctuary and also Hippie Chick N Farm. Learn more about this land: Come pitch your tent on our peaceful, 10-acre farm sanctuary, which is home to over 100 rescued animals.  You'll have access to a community fire pit, electricity for charging electronics, running hot/cold water including a semi private outdoor shower, a great view of the sunset and stars and you can book a guided tour on the 2 miles of wooded trails located on our adjacent 90 acre wildlife preserve.  Plus, we have many rescue animals who enjoy socializing with guests and you can book a private tour to hear their stories and get an up close and personal animal experience. We are a grassroots, family run, vegan 501c3 non-profit organization.  So when you stay with us, purchase extras from us, or take a tour with us, your money goes directly to the lifelong care of our beautiful and deserving residents. **Please note, First and foremost, this property is our beloved home, and the home of our animal residents. Many animals came from situations of neglect and abuse and may not want to socialize. If an animal comes up to you looking for affection, by all means give it to them if you so desire. But otherwise please respect their choice to not be social.

Camping in Georgia with campfires guide

Overview

Whether you’re exploring the Appalachian peaks and Blue Ridge Mountains of the north, road-tripping through the heartlands, or hopping between beaches, marshes, and barrier islands along the Atlantic coast—the Peach State has a camping experience to suit all tastes. Take your pick of 50 Georgia state parks, 11 national parks, and two national forests, with miles of trails and endless options for RV and tent camping, glamping, and backcountry campsites. With mild winter temperatures, camping trips are possible year-round, but spring and fall provide the best weather for outdoor activities, and southern summers are best enjoyed by the water.

Where to go

Atlanta & North Georgia

The north Georgia mountains provide some of the state’s best camping and hiking terrain, including part of the Appalachian Trail. The vast Chattahoochee National Forest is dotted with historic sites and campgrounds, while cascading waterfalls, RV camping, and glampsites await at Amicalola Falls State Park. Canyon hikes and waterfalls are among the highlights at Tallulah Gorge State park and Cloudland Canyon State Park (the latter also has yurts for rent), and Red Top Mountain State Park lies less than an hour from the state capital, Atlanta.

Central Heartlands

Augusta, Athens, and Macon have a rich musical legacy—artists from James Brown to Otis Redding hail from these parts—plus some of Georgia’s best camping right on their doorstep. Head to Mistletoe State Park to hike, kayak, and fish on the shores of Clarkes Hill Lake; snag an RV campsite or cabin at George L. Smith State Park; or rent a cozy cottage at Indian Springs State Park.

South Georgia

Rolling farmlands form the backdrop for a road trip through South Georgia, perhaps checking into an RV park in one of the many small towns along the way. The region’s most impressive hiking trails are found in Providence Canyon State Park, along with backcountry tent sites, while Stephen C. Foster State Park is an International Dark Sky Park and a wildlife haven set on the banks of the Okefenokee Swamp.

Coastal Georgia

Georgia’s 100-mile slice of Atlantic coastline stretches down from Savannah to Cumberland Island, peppered with sandy beaches, saltwater marshes, and barrier islands. Rent a camper cabin or RV site with full hookups close to the beaches and waterways of Skidaway Island State Park, explore the biking trails or take a dolphin-spotting cruise around Tybee Island, or escape the crowds at the hike-in campsites along the Cumberland Island National Seashore.
