The grant was held for 35 years before Maria Garzon, who survived husband Antonio, sold the land they called Garzon’s Point to Joseph (Jose) Bonifay. The land uses were favorable for cattle grazing and turpentining through the 1800s. Many more pioneer families moved into the area and began their own business in the booming industrial opportunities of western Florida. It came to be known as Yellow River Marsh State Buffer Preserve on June 12, 2000, when it was purchased by the state of Florida to protect rare and environmentally sensitive lands, plants and animals. Through generous donations, Preservation 2000 and the Florida Forever Program, more land was added to protect contiguous habitat of the Garcon Ecosystem. Today Yellow River Marsh Preserve State Park provides recreational opportunities for hiking and nature study along the Great Florida Birding Trail among rare and endemic plant species and within one of Florida’s oldest multi-cultural frontiers.The preserve is located in Santa Rosa County on Garcon Point, which separates Escambia Bay from Blackwater Bay. We loved this peaceful oasis in Pensacola! Joe is SO COOL and was such a gracious host to us. He was very accommodating, and even helped me with my car! This is a special site he's created with a lot of heart and love and it shows. Malachi is in fact different by design. We will totally come back. What a beautiful place to relax and let the noise of the world fade away. The property is spacious, with plenty of shade and room to run and play, plus a lovely walking trail that leads down to the creek. Though the creek is narrow, it was perfect for walking the full creek bed with our dog as he learns the river. Along the way, we found several swimming holes that were just deep enough to cool off, but never too deep to be safe. The fire pit is beautifully laid out and makes the perfect spot for morning coffee in the shade. The house itself is neat, clean, and tidy, with everything thoughtfully put together — it truly feels like a cozy cabin in the woods. We especially appreciated how private and dog-friendly the property is. Our pittie boy had the best time exploring, swimming, and enjoying the simple pleasures of the private beach and creek walks. It’s exactly the kind of secluded getaway we’re always searching for, and we’ve already added it to our trip planner for future visits. Mary was so very pleasant, patient and accommodating. I felt very welcomed and at home. Thank you Mary :)

Wonderful place to just hang out at the creek and disconnect from the everyday hustle of work. Joe’s land is beautiful and gorgeous, but the real gem here is Joe! Joe is the sweetest, kindest human and I highly recommend his space. The land feels so special and it’s obvious that it is well-loved. The tent is spacious and just what is needed for a little relax and recharge. The A/C works great. Amazing Host, Site is as advertised. A/C Camping suite is well suited for those who want all the experience, with a break from the setup. Just bring preffered bedding and cooking, amenities and the like. Water provided on site at each site along with Electrical. Keep electrical demands and cooling expectations real as its intended to be an offset in the high heat and meets 'a glamping standard' in medium and low heat; bring your own air circulator to help the A.C. out and you'll be in hog heaven. No sweat!

One of the best places that we've stayed hip camping so far. Joseph had thought of everything it seemed like it was even improving as we were there by putting some padding down on the bunk bed he constructed. This is one of those hosts that's taking it serious and it shows! Our favorite feature was the trail he had made on the property and it was very beautiful there. I would come back here.

Beautiful rustic yet elegant log cabin In a remote location with no one else in sight from the property. Private beach on the river, which the grandkids loved. There is a large pavillion down by the creek. A firepit and grill behind the house and a large back porch. Absolutely wonderful place to unplug and spend time with family. The house does have wi-fi and Hughes Net if you choose to stay plugged in. Very spotty cell service. We had a great time. Lightning hit nearby while we were there and we lost power. Mary was readily available to contact the power company and stayed in close contact until the issues were resolved. She offered to refund our remaining days if we wanted to check out but we were enjoying ourselves so much we stayed anyway. Would definitely recommend the cabin. Great location, beautiful home and attentive hostess. What else do you need?!

We had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay at Malakai campground. Joe was very accommodating and helpful if we needed something. I flew from Iowa with my two teenage daughters and came unprepared in terms of sleeping arrangement. There are two wooden L-shaped bunkbeds, but no mattresses. Joe had a spare twin mattress he lent us for my daughters to share. I slept in my car rather than buying an air mattress. Everything else was great. Appreciated the shower house and the laundry on site. Would definitely go back.

It's official -- after 4 years of politics we are officially a park and a preserve.....9 acres of 🚶‍♂️ trails 👣 we are still constructing trails by hand I believe this place has a spiritual strength to people of all nations History of our location Count De Galvez awarded a land grant on Garcon Point to Antonio Garzon following his 1781 Siege of Pensacola in consideration of “his good services rendered as an interpreter to the Indians of Pensacola." The grant was held for 35 years before Maria Garzon, who survived husband Antonio, sold the land they called Garzon’s Point to Joseph (Jose) Bonifay. The land uses were favorable for cattle grazing and turpentining through the 1800s. Many more pioneer families moved into the area and began their own business in the booming industrial opportunities of western Florida. It came to be known as Yellow River Marsh State Buffer Preserve on June 12, 2000, when it was purchased by the state of Florida to protect rare and environmentally sensitive lands, plants and animals. Through generous donations, Preservation 2000 and the Florida Forever Program, more land was added to protect contiguous habitat of the Garcon Ecosystem. Today Yellow River Marsh Preserve State Park provides recreational opportunities for hiking and nature study along the Great Florida Birding Trail among rare and endemic plant species and within one of Florida’s oldest multi-cultural frontiers.The preserve is located in Santa Rosa County on Garcon Point, which separates Escambia Bay from Blackwater Bay.
