Growing up in Southern Colorado I was fortunate to explore this zone as a kid and I feel fortunate that I can share Mono Loco Flats with others. Set up camp and enjoy sweeping views of Mount Blanca and the surrounding Sangre De Cristo mountain range. This 15 acre camp is situated just off highway 160 for easy access, approximately 25 minutes from The Great Sand Dunes Natianal park and Zapata Falls. Mono Loco Flats is an excellent home base for exploring the San Luis Valley. Sangre de Cristo Creek is a short hike or drive to the south. Fort Garland is a 10-minute drive. All three sites provide 360 panoramic views with epic sunrise and sunset views of Mount Blanca. Wild horses and prong horned antelope may wander the Mesa as you enjoy your camp. The natural beauty of these three campsites is worth protecting so please if you pack it in, pack it out. This is a dry camp with no toilet or garbage facilities. Please treat this land with respect so that future campers may enjoy the land free of rubbish. All three campsites are accessible with any type of vehicle, and the long driveway and turnaround can accommodate any trailer or RV up to 20'. Driving a short while on a dirt path leads into a nice area surrounded by many willow trees of the area, around a turn on the dirt path opens up to a large open area. The open area consists of fine soil, lots of dry grass during the winter and and a dry creek at the edge of the property. This area is great for camping and listed activities. The nearby town has much much more to do in nature featuring fishing, camping, horseback riding and hiking. The property is on the other side of the creek. Be careful of spiky ground plants. Have fun and enjoy all that there is available! Please leave nature as it was when you arrived!

This is a lovely spot that we had all to our selves. We parked our trailer near the river and could listen to it all night long. This was a convenient location to both Curchara (2 miles) and La Veta (9 miles), plus all of the hiking trails and lakes in the surrounding national forest. I'm sure we will be coming back.

Beautiful and spacious site. It is close to the highway making access easy, especially if you have a large rig (we camped with a 28’ fifth wheel and 16’ trailer and had PLENTY of space). River runs next to site. Trees and brush surrounding, making it private with great views. Close to La Veta and Cuchara. Cows might greet you from the neighboring pasture!

Joshua’s land was just what we were looking for. Extremely peaceful and a night sky that will blow your mind. We spent two nights here in our van and fell in love with the Spanish Peaks area. Do yourself a favor and pop over to Great Sand Dunes NP, about a 1.5 hour drive and worth every minute. Lots of cool old farming artifacts on the property too. Weekend Trip to Lone Spruce Camp

The Lone Spruce was hands-down one of the easiest Hipcamp sites we’ve ever found—great layout, spotless, and super welcoming. The host was amazing (I’m still not convinced she didn’t secretly train the wildlife to show up on cue just for our review). Night one: my wife and I are sitting down to dinner when I glance out the camper window and—casual as can be—a bear strolls by on the other side of the river. Later that evening, while enjoying a gorgeous sunset, two giant bucks wandered through the site like they were auditioning for a nature documentary. Not to be outdone, the second night a parade of turkeys marched across the river as if they were in on the whole thing. We left with full bellies, full camera rolls, and full hearts. The Lone Spruce isn’t just a campsite—it’s a front-row ticket to the wildlife channel, minus the commercials. We’ll definitely be back, and if you’re lucky, maybe the host will “release the animals” on schedule for you too. Highly recommended!

We had a wonderful time staying here! The land is gorgeous and it was easy to find a great campsite. Perfect for rustic dispersed camping and close to lots of wonderful nature in this corner of Colorado. Would love to stay again!

Perfect desert style camping! Bring your own shade! ☀️ Thank you for providing water with large tank for the unbeatable camping bathroom experience! A flush toilet and a HOT shower under the incredible starry skies are unmatched! The lake is a 3 min drive or a small hike away. You cannot swim in this lake but there's plenty of beach and you can still fish and be on-water! The small town aboit 12 mins away is perfect for any last minute or forgotten quick grabs. A perfect get away without getting too far away!

Weekend Trip to JB Recreational Ranch

Lizards, beetles, rocks, bones, wild turkeys, the sounds of a flowing creek, and a night sky to make you feel so small. For the kids, this campsite had everything they needed for a weekend of grand memory-making. For the parents, you can sit back comfortably at the top of the hill, watch the kids as they wander the entire property, and take in the views of the Spanish Peaks. We love this area, but this site might be the best we've experienced.

1 night at Starry Dunes Ranch Camp

This place was absolutely amazing. We had it completely to ourselves and never once felt unsafe. It was close enough to town to get a bite to eat but far enough away to have the amazing dark sky. The site has a picnic table and fire pit and the most amazing view of Blanca Peak. Definitely already planning my trip back.

Weekend Trip to Lone Spruce Camp

This spot is so beautiful! It is on the river, sleeping with the windows open listening to the water was incredibly relaxing. The owners were very friendly and responsive. We were there on the 4th of July and we had the place to ourselves. The highway of legends, on which the site is, is a journey everyone should take!

Beautiful area with great views. . Stayed at site 1 and there where others at site 2, wouldn’t even know they where there. Good spaced out sites. Being holiday traffic a lot of cars heading up and down the highway. Overall highly recommend.
