AZ state land is like a state park, but with zero amenities. So, I started building amenities on my property. We now have trash service, compost toilets, running hot water, a shower building, a furnished campsite, a mini barndominium, and everything runs on solar power. We also get Amazon deliveries. The park is only 20 miles from the Tucson city limits, but when you get out here you’ll feel like you’re a million miles away. Your ears will ring for the first half hour while adjusting to the quiet. It’s a great place to read a book, unwind, and take some time off from the mouse marathon of daily urban life. It’s also a great place to bring your ATV, dirt bike, or favorite pew-pews to go play Mad Max Beyond Thunderchicken out in the state land. There’s a little something for everybody if you know what I mean. Night time is very dark out here. There are no street lights because Kitt Peak National Observatory is just over yonder. You can see it from the property. Most nights the Milky Way is clear and visible in the sky. I have pathway lights, and low lumen lighting around the park, but a flashlight is still helpful for getting around at night. Next door is a bird sanctuary with 2 macaws (Blue Bird and Max), and halfway up the mountain (Keystone Peak) is an abandoned fluorite mine you can go explore. We are in the foothills of the Sierrita Mountains, at an elevation of 3,200 ft. That’s 1,000 ft higher than Tucson, and 2,000 ft higher than Phoenix. The plant life is very lush and green for the desert, and the wildlife is plentiful.

Weekend Trip to Mesquite Haven

We stayed in one of their two bunkhouses.. Super cozy, kind of car culture themed.. The other one was more Western.. Close by, they have The Barn.. A simple kitchen and bathroom, available for everyone on the property to use.. ALL utensils, supplies, and grille tools. Super thoughtful! We opted for a couple of the Add-Ons.. Jen took very good attention to our requests! Next time, we're TOTALLY staying in the Tombstone Rose. We were really impressed with the property.. Did some local spots, ajen suggested.. They really have thought about almost everything! Thanks for the experience! We'll be back!

A gem of a place that I can’t recommend enough! A friend and I stayed here for a night in our transition from Sedona to Tucson and absolutely loved it. Conny and her family are the kindest people and so knowledgeable about the area. The casitas are gorgeous- well decorated and with cozy amenities. Will be coming back to stay again.

3 nights at SaguaroGlamp, near Saguaro NP

Staying in the casita was the perfect setup for our getaway with our dogs! Visiting the desert with pets can be really hard, since the heat can be overwhelming and they aren’t allowed in many of the areas of the national park. Conny’s air conditioned Casita space was so perfect for us! We were able to keep the dogs safely inside for the hottest parts of the day, then hiked with them off leash through the acres and acres of BLM land that surrounds the property. I think this is one of the best ways to experience the desert, and I would highly recommend it to anyone traveling with dogs. The land is beautiful and close enough to the national park that you get to experience all the wonder of the saguaros and the animals from the ranch. Be mindful of the distance from town though! The closest grocery store is 45 minutes away, and the road coming in can be difficult at night.

Our family wanted to enjoy some quiet time in nature and this ranch turned out to be a perfect choice. In less than one hour from Tucson, we were in the middle of over 50 acres of wild dessert. Our room was in a private courtyard attached to the main house. It was comfortable, immaculate and provided superb views of the dessert. We spotted a roadrunner, quail, woodpeckers, spiders, millipedes and the Sonoran Toad. We also enjoyed star gazing and night photography. Our gracious hostess Cornelia quickly responded to our questions before our arrival. Getting there requires driving on an unpaved road for the last five miles. Our car was not equipped for this but Cornelia picked us up at the entrance to the farm. She and her family were warm and helpful and added to our Comfy, laid- back holiday at Casita Alpina.

This was a great experience. Great views, wonderful dark sky at night this is an excellent spot to explore. Hosts are perfect. They have great knowledge and are so very helpful. The airstream was perfect. Excellent AC, Internet and Netflix.

Weekend Trip to Boulder hideout

We absolutely loved our stay! The location was beautiful and unique, surrounded by scenic views and huge boulders that made the whole experience feel extra special. The cabin itself was cozy and perfect for a peaceful overnight getaway with my wife and our dogs. Cole, the host, went above and beyond by providing thoughtful amenities like fresh well water in a barrel, firewood, a lighter, a grill with propane, and even small but super helpful items like paper towels and dishes. It’s clear that a lot of care was put into making the place comfortable and welcoming. Highly recommend this spot for anyone looking to relax and enjoy nature with a few comforts included.

What an epic adventure in the Tucson area desert! Deacon and Debi’s site is cozy and quiet in some beautiful wilderness. They were welcoming and happy to answer questions and make the stay great. I loved the deck for stargazing at night. Very cool site!

If you are searching for a hideaway to unplug from the world, I recommend The Boulders as your next escape. We were there midweek and it was sooo quiet. We heard an airplane occasionally but little else. Photos do not do justice to the stunning landscape. This was an amazing experience I hope to revisit again.

I spent two glorious nights at the Boulders. It's clear that Cole has put a lot of thought and passion into this cabin. I loved the attention to detail; the salvaged wood, the western style bedding, decorative ceramics, and the photos showcasing the work that went into building this one-of-a-kind treasure. On a personal note, it was shocking to see the Starlink satellite when I sat on a boulder marveling at the night sky (had to research it once I got cell service, as I thought I was observing a extraordinary astronomical event or an alien landing😆). The one thing I think some may want to know about is that there is a UTV raceway somewhat nearby. During daylight hours, you can hear it. It didn't bother me at all, but someone looking for complete silence may want to take note. Overall an extraordinary stay and I am thankful to Cole and Hipcamp for making it possible.
