Cleghorn Farm is a mixed farm just north east of the market town of Lanark. Comprised of 250 acres of fields and woodland and bounded to the south by Mouse Water, it is a beautiful spot to get away from it all without having to leave it all behind if you don't want to. The fields are grazed and cultivated but the woodlands are much as they were at the end of the last ice age with spectacular walks along Cleghorn Glen with the chance to see badgers, bats, deer and all manner of birds among the towering pine and beech trees.
The Mouse Water (pronounced moose) tumbles down along the edge of the farm and has some glorious pools for swimming, shallows for paddling and some spectacular water falls before it joins the River Clyde, all a gentle walk from the sites.

Built in 1733, King Garth is also known as The Old Customs House, reflecting its role in these fraught times of smuggling. Its strategic position on the banks of The Eden served as the perfect lookout for a bailiff employed by Carlisle Corporation to protect the very important salmon fishery. The plaques on the building which commemorate the visits by Mayors date back to the 1700s. These visits no doubt involved indulgent banquets centring around freshly caught salmon
I grew up on the opposite side of the river. On family walks along the Eden I was always fascinated by the house on the other side sited in such an amazing position.
In 2010, when I returned to Cumbria I was amazed to hear that this house was for sale. It was a ruin and everyone told me I was mad..... I probably was a little! But I soon realised that I wasn’t alone in my love of this house, everyone I met from the surrounding villages had a tale to tell about this iconic place. King Garth is for sharing - with locals, (we have an annual barbecue), with wildlife and with people like you.
The aim when renovating King Garth was to celebrate and embrace its history. King Garth is off grid and has no running water. It is furnished in a style to reflect its history. It isn’t everyone’s ‘cup of tea’: you have to drive a mile down a muddy lane, there is no hot shower, no electric lighting, and a compost toilet. BUT we offer beautiful evenings of candle light, log burner, hot tub under the stars and bathing in the river.
My priority with King Garth and the land attached was to manage in a way to protect the abundant wildlife. There are also alpacas who you can look after during your stay.
You will be astounded by the din the birds make at dawn and dusk!
Inside the house there is an owl box where one summer a pair of barn owls successfully raised chicks. Since then a kestrel frequents the box and has twice laid there.
This part of the Eden is tidal so both estuarine and river species co exist. Kingfishers and otters are often spotted And even the occasional seal! Kinggarth comes with fishing rights and if you want to fish this can be arranged with the host.
The bird feeders are frequented by tree sparrows, yellow hammers, wood peckers, nut hatches and in winter red poll.

Time for a slice of the simple life? Grab a peaceful Lake District pitch at Church Lane Campsite and immerse yourselves in proper scenic countryside with few distractions. This back to basics site has life’s essentials in place – in the form of drinking water, toilets and showers – but hasn’t gone overboard with other facilities, so you’ll simply be left to set up your space and soak up the gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside. Pitches here are on grass with trees around the field to provide a bit of shelter and shade – and the views are pretty much green as far as you can see. This setting gives the place a remote atmosphere that’s well suited to adventurous travellers, nature lovers and serenity-seeking couples or families. That said, it’s not actually all that remote – handily, you’ll be able to drive to Kendal in about 10 minutes for cultural attractions, shops and places to eat, and popular Windermere is about the same distance in the other direction. Closer still are a smart rural restaurant and the little village of Crook, a mile away and the home of the local pub – both excellent options for a good feed.

4 nights at The Damson Shepherd's Hut
We stayed here for 4 nights and it was absolutely perfect, exactly what we were hoping for......just to be able to relax, read and take in the peaceful surroundings.
The site was beautiful and the shepherds hut was very well equipped, clean and cosy.
Jo was a fantastic host, checking us in supplying umbrellas due to the rain!. She was not in anyway intrusive but available if we needed anything.
If you are looking as we were for a break in a secluded area this is the place for you. Although the roads to the site are small and in some cases singal track, we were not put off by this, it added to the seclusion we were looking for. Just sheep for company!
Thank you Jo for a lovely stay, we 100% recommend Gilpin Mill's shepherds hut and will definitely be returning for a longer stay next time.

Bathroom is small but manageable for a few days away. Views and location make up for this.

4 m rooftop tent
My wife and I spent 5 nights here in our roof top tent with a second tent to sit and cook in. We are totally self sufficient carrying all our own food, water and toilet facilities. We were the only ones camping there, and it was so peaceful and quiet, with just the sound of birds singing and owls twittering. Malcolm was incredibly friendly and checked to see we were ok and made sure we had plenty of wood for huge camp fires. We were completely surrounded by trees and even though the main road was not far away we could not hear any traffic noise. It was the rise of the midge season and local pharmacies sold sprays and lotions that contain 50% diet which came in handy. If you want safe wild camping then this is the place to stay. Will go back.

Ted was a kind, friendly host and the campsite was wonderful. Only issue was having just one toilet but it’s not really a big deal as we’re used to wild camping, just one more would be great though. Absolutely beautiful scenery, a nice quiet site with a stunning view. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely visit again :)

We had the most amazing 3 nights staying at Ted's campsite! The views were incredible, we went to bed and woke up every morning surrounded by fells. We rented a fire pit from Ted which was great and kept us warm into the evening. We walked to a lovely pub Dufton and did some lovely walks right from our tent. Meeting Ted was by far the highlight of our trip. He was so helpful and generous. We hitchhiked from Newcastle so were without a car and Ted offered us a lift around the area many times! He even took us to a chocolate factory - his generosity and kindness was so wonderful and greatly appreciated! If you want a camp that makes you feel like you are wilding camping with amazing views and an even more amazing host then this is the place! Thanks Ted you make our trip :)

Beautiful small, quiet campsite, set in picturesque countryside. Perfect for families or couples looking to unwind. The communal shower and toilet facilities are modern, well maintained and clean. You can charge your phone's and power banks up in the facilities building too. There is a cafe on site too.
The friendly campsite warden was particularly helpful. We only stayed one night on this occasion but we'll probably use this site for longer stays in the future

I honestly can’t express how much we enjoyed our stay. Ruth has created something so special, it was genuinely the best camping experience we’ve had.
It truly felt like we were wild camping. Surrounded by wild flowers, nature and trees, even the walk to the toilet was picturesque with incredible views. We had our own secluded area with no neighbours. Ruth has thought of everything, from games and blankets, to being able to buy eggs from her own chickens, there is nothing she hasn’t thought of.
We’ll definitely be returning.

Great spot and starting point for walks up Murton Pike and High Cup Nick. Nice little site, portaloo and tap as described and Ted is a fine fellow. Fresh eggs and he also let us stay in our campervans so worth asking if it’s been dry enough. Would stay again
