A firm favourite among the camping fraternity (hardly surprising given its secluded woodland pitches, campfire encouragement, and natural beauty)
Situated on the land of a former railway station in a sparsely populated part of Devon, this adult-only hideaway is a truly special place. We first heard about it in 2009, and it quickly became a favourite among Hipcamp readers, and we’re pleased to say that it has retained all its rustic charm – along with its secluded woodland pitches, campfires and natural beauty. Whether you bring your own tent or opt for a pre-erected Rent-A-Tent here, you’re going to love your pitch. There are just 19 of them, spread about the place in woodland clearings. Each pitch bears its own number and offers privacy within a magical tree-filled setting. Each has a tarp strung up to one side, allowing some added all-weather protection and creating the perfect space to set up your own bush-craft kitchen. The owners Greg and Liz eventually bought Hole Station after keeping their eyes on the property for years. They live in what was the old ticket office while their kids are residents of a renovated old railway carriage next door (think Annie and Clarabel-style from Thomas The Tank Engine). Together they are slowly bringing the wood back to its former forest glory by coppicing and pollarding, which they do in winter, after the last of the season’s campers has packed up and gone home. The cut-down wood is used to create wildlife habitats and fuel for campfires. So feel a little smug, as you sit mesmerised by the licking flames of your fire at night, that you’re forming a symbiotic relationship with the trees all around you. In fact, the clearing you’re pitched in is helping to shed more life-giving light on the young oaks nearby, enabling them to have a kick-start at growing into huge, majestic trees likely to outlive us for centuries to come. It’s not just the campfire culture, perfect pitches and woodland restoration that Liz, Greg and family have got right at Hole Station, though. The loos are of the compost variety and all rubbish (including food waste) is recycled or turned into compost wherever possible in order to give something back to this lovely corner of England. Finally their resident pony Sanne is on hand to provide horse-and-trap rides and there are three goats – the preposterously named Dominar Rigel 16th, Kha’Dargo and Grace. Greg and Liz plan to relaunch their meadow as a centre for ‘low-tech living’ courses. Plus there’s a signed Woodland Walk on which you half expect to encounter a fairy or two before reaching (handily labelled) The End – a top spot for watching the sunset. Evenings are peaceful wherever you are, with quiet time after 10pm. So there you have it: Hole Station is as peaceful and bucolic as it gets, and about as refreshing and romantic a country getaway as you will find.

BYO Woodland Camping
Like wild camping
Have just stayed here for a long weekend and it was the best campsite we’ve been to. The site and facilities spotless. Amazing spot, felt just like wild camping but with showers and toilets, loved the compostable toilets and information about what happens with them. Breakfasts were amazing and it’s so chilled and relaxed, a great break away. Will be coming back

BYO Woodland Camping
An amazing place to camp! The woodland pitches are great and really different to bigger campsites lined up in fields. The shelter and fire pits included really make it into a proper campsite. The pitches are far enough away from each other to give you a feeling of privacy. If you fancy camping but want something a bit unique then this is the place for you!

BYO Woodland Camping
We stayed at the secluded pitch named ‘Blair Witch’, and contrary to the name, this pitch was wonderful! Super private and away from other campers walking by on their trips to the great facilities the site has to offer. The pitch was spacious and more than enough for the 2 of use, you could probably fit more than the one tent on it. Greg and the team were wonderful and super friendly at all times of the day. Breakfast was delicious and fantastically priced too! We look forward to returning again soon and exploring the area more!

BYO Woodland Camping
It's a beautiful campsite, with lots of great amenities including hot showers, fire wheel, tarp cover so you can cook even when raining, and a little tripod grill. I really enjoyed their meals everyday as well at the onsite cafe. Highly recommend!

BYO Woodland Camping
Loved the peace and tranquility, well spaced out, secluded pitches. Toilets were clean and the showers were hot. Even the signs give a bonus chuckle
From the host
Camping at Hole Station is unique, pitches are sited in private clearings in woodland - about as far from camping in a field as you can get. The peace, quiet and privacy you enjoy here are an eye opener for those who have previously camped on sites that are 'open plan'. It's quite common for our campers to arrive with detailed plans for something to do or somewhere to go every minute of the day, only to find they'd actually much rather chill in the woods, have a beer and do nothing much at all. There's a reason for that - you might wish to google 'Phytoncides: The Science Behind Forest Bathing Benefits'. Every BYO pitch has it's own private loo, a tarp shelter which is great for setting up kitchen under, a firepit, an adjustable grill for use over your campfire, a simple bench and a Robin which will expect your full attention at all times. Rent A Tent pitches are equipped with everything you need to go camping including a large safari style, fully equipped dining/leisure shelter. You just bring bedding, a toiletry kit and torches. Turn up, walk in, kettle on/bottle opened and chuckle as you watch BYO'ers struggle with wayward tent poles. No tripping over next doors guylines here, or experiencing the joys of kids playing football at 6am. You won't suffer the delights of car doors slamming, headlights providing illumination in your tent , others who are convinced their choice in music is what you want to hear 24 hours, or finding out what some shouty cockney is up to on Eastenders. Sat by your campfire, gazing up at the stars sans light pollution, you could be forgiven for thinking you have the place all to yourselves. A rare place where mums and dads can have some grown up time together – no under 18's. Two styles of camping: BYO You bring all your own gear. Every BYO pitch has it's own kitchen shelter, simple bench and campfire pit. No two pitches are the same, and it's self selection so on arrival the first thing you do is have a wander and choose from those available. We charge per person which means you can put up awnings, hammocks, multiple tents etc. without being hit with a bill for extras. Maximum tent size 7 x 5 metres, let us know if your tent exceeds 5m, we will reserve a larger pitch for you. Rent A Tent All you need to bring is your bedding, torches, matches and a toiletry kit. Your accommodation consists of a 2 bedroom walk in tent, with a wood floor, easy standing height for 6 footers, ready inflated airbeds (1 x double & 1 x single), sitting and storage space. What you won't be expecting is the fab safari type shelter which stands next to your tent. It's for your exclusive use and includes wooden floor, back and sides, and canvas roof. Your shelter houses your dining table, benches, camp fire bench, 2 ring gas cooker, storage space, cool box, pots, frying pan, cooking implements, cutlery, dishes and plates, kettle, drinking water, wash up kit, mugs and glasses, and vitally - a bottle opener. Although you have gas cooking facilities provided, if you really don't want to cook then don't - we have an on site cafe serving breakfast every day and takeaway evening meals that just need heating can be ordered on site (order from the cafe by 10am for same day).
Nearby attractions
Dartmoor is a 20-minute drive away and the beaches of Bude and Widemouth are a 35–40-minute drive in the opposite direction. You can be standing on a Dartmoor Tor in the morning, swimming in the Atlantic in the afternoon, enjoying dinner in a tucked-away country pub in the evening, and finishing the day sitting gazing into your campfire on site. The area is great for cycling with the nearby Tarka Trail and the Granite Way for off road, and any number of quiet country lanes. If you fancy honing your Robin Hood skills, there’s an archery centre just down the road: Arms of Old (01409 231171). Or Dragon Archery (08000 372466), further afield, has exciting courses – come and have a go at the Agincourt course if you and your bow are up to it.
