A firm favourite among the camping fraternity (hardly surprising given its secluded woodland pitches, campfire encouragement, and natural beauty)

Hole Station Campsite is where you go when you’ve had your fill of the ordinary. A bold claim? Well not according to those who would know – those who have had the experience!

Opened in 2009, Hole Station is set deep in the Devon countryside on the site of a former country railway station (long ago closed), nestled in meadows and woodland, and now a private nature reserve, shared with you.

Pitches are spread through a 23 acre woodland, giving privacy you’ll never find on a ‘normal’ campsite. If hell is other people, then be assured, at Hole Station you’re considerably nearer to heaven than the other place. And speaking on the heavenly subject, this is a ‘dark sky’ area, so on clear nights well, look up and yes the stars, the stuff of which you are made. A Saturday night city centre experience this is not.

Campfires are allowed, and if you haven’t experienced a campfire at night in the company of your favourite other human/s in a place where it’s easy to imagine you have the whole place to yourselves, a wild place, you should book now because you know what? You’ll be making beautiful memories. And what is a life without those.

Being in Devon, and a great central location at that, huge sandy beaches and the tors of Dartmoor are easily reached, as is The Land of Pasties (Cornwall). Bring your bikes for amazingly scenic traffic free cycle routes and quiet country lanes and if you have a surf board that too – you’re close to Bude, the local surfer dude capital.

So, take a look at the reviews, ask yourself why not, then travel the roads that lead here. It’s a road trip where the destination DOES matter.

Camping at Hole Station is unique, pitches are sited in private clearings in woodland - about as far from camping in a field as you can get. The peace, quiet and privacy you enjoy here are an eye opener for those who have previously camped on sites that are 'open plan'. Of course camp fires are allowed with firepits and cooking grills for hire, and logs, kindling and firelighter kits available from reception. It's quite common for our campers to arrive with detailed plans for something to do or somewhere to go every minute of the day, only to find they'd actually much rather chill in the woods, have a beer and do nothing much at all. There's a reason for that - you might wish to google 'Phytoncides: The Science Behind Forest Bathing Benefits'. Every BYO pitch has a tarp shelter which is great for setting up kitchen under. Rent A Tent pitches are equipped with everything you need to go camping including a large safari style, fully equipped dining/leisure shelter. You just bring bedding, a toiletry kit and torches. Turn up, walk in, kettle on/bottle opened and chuckle as you watch BYO'ers struggle with wayward tent poles. No tripping over next doors guylines here, or experiencing the joys of kids playing football at 6am. You won't suffer the delights of car doors slamming, headlights providing illumination in your tent , others who are convinced their choice in music is what you want to hear 24 hours, or finding out what some shouty cockney is up to on Eastenders. Sat by your campfire, gazing up at the stars sans light pollution, you could be forgiven for thinking you have the place all to yourselves. A rare place where mums and dads can have some grown up time together – no under 18's. Two styles of camping: BYO You bring all your own gear. Every BYO pitch has it's own kitchen shelter, simple bench and campfire pit. No two pitches are the same, and it's self selection so on arrival the first thing you do is have a wander and choose from those available. We charge per person which means you can put up awnings, hammocks, multiple tents etc. without being hit with a bill for extras. Maximum tent size 7 x 5 metres, let us know if your tent exceeds 5m, we will reserve a larger pitch for you. Rent A Tent All you need to bring is your bedding, torches, matches and a toiletry kit. Your accommodation consists of a 2 bedroom walk in tent, with a wood floor, easy standing height for 6 footers, ready inflated airbeds (1 x double & 1 x single), sitting and storage space. What you won't be expecting is the fab safari type shelter which stands next to your tent. It's for your exclusive use and includes wooden floor, back and sides, and canvas roof. Your shelter houses your dining table, benches, camp fire bench, 2 ring gas cooker, storage space, cool box, pots, frying pan, cooking implements, cutlery, dishes and plates, kettle, drinking water, wash up kit, mugs and glasses, and vitally - a bottle opener. Although you have gas cooking facilities provided, if you really don't want to cook then don't - we have an on site cafe serving breakfast every day and takeaway evening meals that just need heating can be ordered on site (order from the cafe by 10am for same day).
Nearby attractions
Dartmoor is a 20-minute drive away and the beaches of Bude and Widemouth are a 35–40-minute drive in the opposite direction. You can be standing on a Dartmoor Tor in the morning, swimming in the Atlantic in the afternoon, enjoying dinner in a tucked-away country pub in the evening, and finishing the day sitting gazing into your campfire on site. The area is great for cycling with the nearby Tarka Trail and the Granite Way for off road, and any number of quiet country lanes. If you fancy honing your Robin Hood skills, there’s an archery centre just down the road: Arms of Old (01409 231171). Or Dragon Archery (08000 372466), further afield, has exciting courses – come and have a go at the Agincourt course if you and your bow are up to it.
Food and drink
Three pubs are within walking distance – the Golden Inn in Highampton (01409 231200), the Half Moon at Sheepwash (01409 231376) and Black River Inn in Black Torrington (01409 231888). There are also plenty of other pubs and restaurants within easy driving distance.
