Splitrock Farm and Retreat started in January 2021 after a global search of a place to set roots, live off the land, and create an amazing place for recreation, relaxation, and rejuvenation. Splitrock was part of a 160-acre avocado farm that prospered from 1970 to 2017, generating over 1million pounds of avocados per year until the previous owners switched off the water in 2017. Ben purchased 101 acres in 2021 with plans to harvest the dead avocado trees for firewood and replant with organic, sustainable crops such as grapes, citrus trees, and flowers. Splitrock's attraction comes from its unique groves, magnificent granite boulders, and sweeping vistas. Mixed within the avocado groves are several ancient groves and solitary trees that include 150+ foot tall pines, hundreds of old oaks, and soaring palms. Freckled throughout the hillsides are thousands of humongous granite boulders, offering a prehistoric feel to the landscape. Above all, Splitrock offers unrivaled views. Over 40 miles of coastline includes views to Point Loma, the Carlsbad power station, and the Pendleton Hospital. To the northeast are views of near 11K foot snowy peaks of San Jacinto and San Gorgonio, with rolling hills of De Luz and Fallbrook in the foreground.

We had such a wonderful weekend at Splitrock Farm & Retreat! My husband and I stayed Friday through Sunday to celebrate our 7-year anniversary, and it was the perfect place to slow down, reconnect, and enjoy being in nature. We arrived Friday night, and a friendly German Shepherds came over to greet us and stayed by our side while we set up our tent and made a fire. It was such a sweet welcome! Around 4 a.m., we were unfortunately woken up by some campers talking loudly and hanging out near the restroom. Our tent happened to be right next to the restroom, so we asked if they could move their gathering elsewhere. Thankfully, they were very understanding and dispersed. Saturday morning was especially memorable when a whole herd of goats came by to visit. They were adorable—and apparently very interested in our food! We made the mistake of leaving our baked potatoes roasting on the campfire while we went to watch the sunset, and when we came back, the goats had helped themselves to our potatoes. 😂 Definitely a camping lesson we won’t forget! We also walked up to the observation deck, which sits on a hill overlooking the property. The view was beautiful and well worth the walk. Even though it was a very hot weekend, the large oak trees provided wonderful shade and relief from the sun, and we loved the steady breeze coming in from the nearby ocean. There was some barking both nights. We weren’t sure if it was from the dogs, coyotes, or a combination of both, but it definitely added to the feeling of being out in the wilderness. If you’re a light sleeper, it may be worth keeping that in mind when choosing your campsite. One of my favorite parts of the weekend was simply sitting beneath the oak trees and sketching. We also loved cooking over the campfire and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. There was something really special about being able to unplug and just spend time together. Overall, we absolutely loved our stay and would definitely come back. We’d especially love to bring our children next time so they can experience the goats, the views, the trees, and the magic of camping here. ❤️

Hilltop Hideout

Loved the Hill Top Hideaway. Big boulders leaning together, created a nice shady spot that I could stand up in. It was perfect for relaxing and getting out of the hot sun. There were goats, and a few awesome white dogs that came up to say hello.

Hilltop Hideout

I'm a reoccurring camper. I've stayed in one of the domes and the bell tents, all accommodations were satisfactory. We truly enjoy the convenience of the location, its close enough you can taste civilization and far enough you can hear the wilderness. The luxury of the dome, the bell tent, and the restrooms with running water. It was a nice cool shower outside during the heat this past weekend. We also signed up for the baby goat encounter and loves it. The two employees there were great, they were very welcoming and introduced us to all the animals. We really enjoyed our campsite this time around and will definitely be back. Thank you for sharing your space with us.

Sleeping Owl Rock

Camped at Sleeping Owl Rock. The Location was nice and spaced out from nearby campsites. Unfortunately there wasn’t any level places for tents was the site was infested with ants. Anything that sat still for more than 10 minutes would get covered with ants including tents. Couldn’t sleep because the ants were all inside the zipped up tent. Unfortunately stayed for only 1 of the 2 nights booked for this reason. Might try Redtail campsite nearby for its large flat tenting area and it didn’t seem to have the same ant problem. Overall the experience would have been good but was ruined by the ants.

Sleeping Owl Rock

Our family had a wonderful stay at Split Rock! Sleeping Owl rock is a great site with beautiful views, though it’s on a bit of a hill. The kids loved seeing all the animals. We were lucky enough to see some baby goats and got to pet them during the animal encounter. Everyone at the farm was so sweet. Would definitely recommend!

Quail's Nest

Overall had a really nice time here with my dog! There were lots of ants everywhere, so be aware of that! The outdoor showers were great to have, but the first one that I tried wouldn’t get hot, but was quite spacious and had lots of hooks and shelves. The other was significantly smaller, with no hooks and was missing the shower head so the water flowed more like a hose, though it was hot. It definitely gets very dark at night so bring enough lights, especially when it’s too hot to have a fire! Would love to come back if I’m ever in the area again :)

Awesome place. Easy to find and well labeled. Word of advice, I came from the north on the 15. Google had me exit Clinton Keith, but an unannounced road closure cost me about 45 minutes to turn back, so I recommend taking the 15 to Mission in Fallbrook. This delay has nothing to do with this campground. I came with my son, camped at Oak Grove, Spot #4. Beautiful views and weather, right near the bathroom and shower (didnt use the shower, but checked it out) The bathroom and shower are clean and well stocked. 2 toilets and 2 sinks in a big metal storage container, very clean. And the shower was built on a rock, very cool! The shower is single use. The Camp Store was open when we came in, bought some wood for a buck a stick and they work on the honor system, so if you have to come back later for more they leave it out and have a QR code or you can slide money right under the door. The parts of the ranch that we explored were very clean and everyone else camping there was very courteous. No trash around and beautiful views from everywhere I stood. This was the first camping trip that I had with my 5 and a half year old son, and I was anxious because I wanted him to enjoy it so we can go more, because I love camping! He was entertained the whole time climbing on rocks and walking around, exploring. He fell in love and cant wait to go back! We had an awesome time, I cant wait to bring the wife, daughter and some friends. What a GEM!!!
