Glamping near Swansea

·

Wales’ second-biggest city boasts a buoyant cultural scene fuelled by excellent restaurants and museums and its many literary connections with Dylan Thomas, the best-known Welsh writer, who grew up here. It’s also positioned on a stretch of sandy coast that ruptures into the Gower Peninsula right outside town. The Gower shorelines are enchanting—think dinky seaside villages, divine sandy beaches, and a montage of elemental clifftops, coastal heath, marsh, and dunes that make a Mecca for a range of wildlife. In central Swansea, Swansea Marina has a touring park for caravans but most campers hereabouts base themselves out on the Gower’s beguiling seaboard within easy reach of the city.

Our beautiful home is a glamping and camping site with its own gorgeous fishing lake on the outskirts of the village of Llandyfan. You can find us to the west of the Brecon Beacons or Bannau Brycheiniog National Park. Llandyfan Campsite has been lovingly re-established in early 2024 by Andy and Jo. Since taking ownership, we have rolled up our sleeves and got stuck into restoring it to its former glory and will soon be back to being a fully operational slice of Welsh heaven. Our first focus has been the fishing lake which we opened in March. The campsite followed in May. We are currently working on electric hook ups and other improvements. We have chickens on site that roam free during the day. They are friendly and like to wander around the tents to say hello to our guests! We would like everyone who visits to have a great time and a relaxing break. Whilst here please be considerate towards others, to their property, and while using the facilities. If you have any concerns, please let us know. We have brought out a few rules from our T&Cs and we kindly ask that you have a read through before your stay. Litter: You must pick up your litter. Please either take it with you or recycle it appropriately in the bins onsite. There are bins around the campsite, please recycle where possible. Pitches to be left as you found them. Noise: Be respectful and consider your neighbours. Keep noise to a minimum after 10pm and before 8am in the morning. No loud music is to be played at any time. Children: Children must be supervised at all times around the campsite and can play within the pitch space allocated to you. At quiet times, it may be possible for children to use vacant pitches for play but this cannot be guaranteed. The amenity block and associated facilities are not to be used as a play area. Dogs: Must not to be left unattended. Are to be kept on leads at all times whilst on the campsite. (We are working on an enclosed dog walking area, however this is not yet available). no refunds on bookings if cancelled withing 10days of booking

Glangwdi Glamping

Glangwdi Glamping offers furnished bell tents in sight of Pen y Fan, the Brecon Beacon’s highest peak. For some, that alone will be reason enough to book but for others there are further temptations. The site is 2.5 acres. Take, for example, Glangwdi’s pygmy goats. There’s a daily opportunity to meet these little farmyard friends and there are ducks and chickens too. And, as if that’s not enough, this flat field in the foothills is just five miles from bustling Brecon and a short walk from woods, waterfalls and wild swimming. The bell tents themselves are yet another attraction. There are six; each pitched around the edge of a neat field on a family farm. Woven hazel fencing ensures a little privacy for each camping couple or family – this place is equally suited to both. Children will love the cute pygmy goats and adults… well let’s face it, they will love the pygmy goats too. But they’ll also love the fact that you can hike straight from site to the top of 886-metre Pen y Fan and its twin peak Corn Du. And who wouldn’t enjoy a campfire under the stars, in the shadow of the Beacons? The five and six metre bell tents are each kitted out with beds, bedding and log-burning stoves. Outside, each has the off-ground fire pit and outdoor seating regular glampers will have come to expect but there’s an added extra too: a private camp kitchen, that’s also canvas covered. It provides a sheltered place to cook and dine when the weather’s wet and welcome shade when this open field is bathed in summer sun. On such days, this is just the kind of scenic spot that could tempt you to stay on site all day but if you’re feeling adventurous the mountains will soon lure you away. Hiking, biking and wild swimming (try Llyn Cwm Llwch on way up top) are all on offer here. Closer by, Held Wood is a local favourite for walks with a series of small waterfalls within it. The Taff Trail offers well-signposted routes – towards the peaks in one direction or along country lanes to the market town of Brecon in the other.

Swansea camping guide

Where to go

Gower Peninsula

The AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) that is the Gower Peninsula begins right on the edge of Swansea—few other big UK cities have such pristine, protected countryside so close. It’s a mix of big sand beaches, rugged cliffs and bewitching little coastal villages with a drum-roll of dramatic moorland in the middle. It’s a well-established pitcher’s paradise, with lots of mainly small-scale farm campsites alongside a few mid-size campsites.

Rhossili Bay

No outdoor-lover should stop by the Gower without visiting this famously, fabulously fetching 2 mile-long sandy beach at the peninsula’s western edge. There’s camping just back from the southern end, at Pitton Cross, and on a larger site at Llangennith, one of Wales’ top surfing spots. The tidal island of Worm’s Head to the south makes for some compelling exploring, and the sand dunes and marshes back from the seafront secrete wonderful birdlife.

South Carmarthenshire

If you can tear yourself away from Swansea’s interesting heritage and the Gower’s wild beauty, then on the other side of Carmarthen Bay you will find the biggest sandy beaches in Wales teasing out in a dazzling golden line across South Carmarthenshire. Huge inlets isolate much of this coast, which reaches its prettiest around the epic Pembrey and Pendine sands. Coast-loving campers should come here to enjoy the region while evading Gower crowds.

When to go

Sunny weather makes Swansea and the Gower more appealing: plump for a time between April and September outside of school holidays to enjoy the most clement weather without the masses present. Swansea itself is an all-year destination, but if you’re sleeping under canvas you’ll likely be based on the Gower, where most campsites are open April-September. July’s Gower Festival, with music performances held in churches across the Gower, and September’s arts-and-culture-based Swansea International Festival are especially lively times.
